  1. I think it will be relatively easy to figure out who we take in some rounds. Just look for the best tough sign guy out there, we'll be taking that guy, more often than not. Of course, I'll give us credit, we did it this past season as well. My honest guess is more teams will start going towards this model though, making it harder to restock the system so quickly. But, I could see us making HUGE splashes on July 2nd as well. Even bigger than what we did this past one, which was great in it's own right.
  2. Maddux or Martinez would both be excellent. I'd be fine with Bobby V as well.
  3. I would be shocked if Riggins was back. I guess Jaramillo is safe though, since he's on a large contract, although this is his last year as well, isn't it?
  4. Isn't retiring basically the epitomy of declining an option?
  5. The Cards hiring Sandberg would be annoying as hell to have to listen to, by the meatballs. But, a week later, when Pujols signs with the Cubs, everything will be OK.
  6. I thought LaRussa had been working on continuous one year deals for some reason.
  7. I want Tito, because as a player's manager, I feel like he would finally get Zambrano his black guy.
  8. I would love Francona. I asked this over in transactions though, how about the guy who's great friends with the best hitter of our era and just retired?
  9. So, we're out of a manager it seems and this guy is retired. He's also evidently really close with the best hitter of this generation. Do wed make this call or not?
  10. Sweet. The gang is already making moves.
  11. We're a major market team that's going to act like it. There's literally zero reason for us to go out and sign a bunch of Marlon Byrd type guys to 2 or 3 year deals so we can be average. Theo is going to spend wildly on the draft and international free agency and we're going to develop quite a few more guys than what we have previously. But he also will spend what it takes to get bigtime talent here as well. No reason whatsoever to think he won't continue to do this.
  12. True, but I want to build a powerhouse. Although some of what I listed as available for next offseason would be construed as middle of the rotation guys anyway. Of course, the real hope is we'll have a guy step up from the system and give us another guy on top of what we can add monetarily as well.
  13. I put this in another thread as well, but I think it breaks down like this basically: we need 2 middle of the order type hitters and 2 frontline pitchers. I think the goal should be have them all by the end of NEXT offseason. It shouldn't matter when we acquire them, because we don't have the money to go get them all right now. My guess is we get one this offseason and another over the course of next season, leaving us needing 2 over the following offseason. Next offseason's pitching class will dwindle a bit, but for now the class includes Matt Cain, fausto Carmona, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, Tim Hudson, Francisco Liriano, Shaun Marcum, Jake Peavy, Anibal Sanchez.Jonathan Sanchez, Joe Saunders, and Scott Shields. Not to mention trade possibilities will pop up as well. But, with cost controlled cheap players we have currently, we've got around 30 or 35 mill to spend this offseason. And it looks like we'll have a little more than that for next offseason as well. And while most media types look at this as a longterm rebuild, I bet Theo is looking at it more like I am, which is we can add 4 impact players before the 2013 season starts and it's just a matter of figuring out what combinations work the best for us.
  14. I'm more worried that CJ's comments yesterday definitely made it sound like Texas has the ball and has to drop it, in order for him to leave.
  15. I would certainly want Lawrie from them. Is Travis Snider ruined forever? If not, I'd want him or Drabek as well, with either Arencibia, Perez. Or D'Arnoud as well. We don't have to trade Garza, by any stretch, so if we do, we better get a package at least as good as the one we gave up for him. Hell, actually it ought to be better than that actually.
  16. What would it take to trade for Billy Butler? He's got 3 years at 24 mill left on his deal. Very solid with upside still as well and a definite heir apparent in Hosmer. How about finding a way to trade for Billingsley, Liriano, or Danks? We can probably swing one trade this offseason, but any of these guys would greatly help us and allow for a bigtime FA acquisition as well.
  17. Screwed how? For 2012? I'll give you that. But that's it. You spend hugely in the draft, build up the system to where you can afford to make a big deal or two and you add another elite player or 2 through FA. There's not a position player we HAVE to have for 2012. But heading into 2013, we've got to have added 2 middle of the order bats. But neither has to be Pujols or Fielder.
  18. Heading into the 2013 season, we're going to have had to added a 3 or 4 hitter and also a 5 or 6 hitter as well. We are also going to have to add 2 frontline pitchers during that time frame. We've basically got 30 or 35 mill this year to address this. And next year we're going to have slightly more than that number as well. And this is if we keep the payroll right where it is. 60 or 70 mill is a ton to work with and we should have quite a few league minimum guys taking spots, so most of this can be allocated towards bigtime FA ordifference makers acquired through trade. How much of this we accomplish immediately isn't all that important to me. But, I'd bet we address at least one of these 4 holes this offseason and possibly 2. Although my guess is the 2nd piece is added during the season.
  19. If they offered Montero and one of Betances or Banuelos, I'd go into rebuild mode for a year. It'd leave us way too shorthanded to try and compete immediately, but it'd give us a hell of a start for 2013.
  20. I think Hoyer is another guy who looks at everything before making a decision. If there are 2 guys who are close, then maybe he looks at the intangibles more in those cases. I think he played some sort of college ball himself, so maybe he holds the whole dugout cohesion thing in high regard. I'm not worried at all about those comments though.
  21. By the way, no matter who we sign this offseason, I'm already thinking this is the best offseason I've seen as a Cub fan by our FO additions alone. And I'm not expecting us to know much of anything that's going on, especially since Hoyer said today they don't like leaks........
  22. I kind of agree. If we miss on Pujols or Prince or maybe a top flight starter, I kind of hope we let the kids have a shot and just sign some one year contract guys. I wouldn't even mind if we decided to shop Soto or Marshall. I think both would bring us very solid returns. That said, I figure Theo already has plans A, B. C, and D formed if this happens and is currently working on plans E, F, and G right now.
  23. I think a quick trade for some middle of the order help would certainly entice Pujols or Fielder quite a bit. I doubt we have enough to actually land Wright, but I could see us trying anyway. My guess is it's the only direction we can really go, because the FA hitting absolutely sucks in this class at positions we could stand to improve in.
  24. I think losing Ramirez doesn't help our cause whatsoever to get Pujols or Prince. If the money is close, I figure they'll go to the team with the most help currently around them. On another note, Levine made it a point to mention that Prince may not want to play in Chicago today in his chat like half a dozen times. Maybe he's already heard that somewhere, I guess.
