  1. He doesn't have to be non tendered today, does he? That's a later date, right?
  2. Wow, they took Smit, Montanez, and Caridad off the 40 man as well. So they could have easily put those 3 on. Hell, maybe 2 or 3 of them ARE the compensation for Theo.
  3. No Flaherty, Rhee, or Antigua? Flaherty is a shocker, if you ask me. Maybe he's part of the compensation package? Because he'll be taken for sure otherwise. I think Rhee will be taken as well, in all honesty. Antigua is a guy who would probably be returned, but I wish all 3 of these guys were protected. We can still trade them before the rule 5 draft though, right?
  4. I'm pretty sure Montero is looked at as a DH or 1B at this point. Maybe he'd be OK as a corner OFer, but I don't think he's ever been tried out there.
  5. Hell, part of me is pulling for a Cespedes/Jackson/Sizemore OF for 2012.
  6. If the Cubs view him as a middle of the order type hitter and can get him for 50 mill over 6 years, it's a very nice bargain.
  7. Hasn't it basically been decided though that Montero has to move off the plate though? Are you saying that expecting him to catch or are you willing to go with a stopgap or Castillo?
  8. Our offseason calendar says it's tomorrow, but according to MLBTR, today's the day to add guys and protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Should be interesting to see what all we do.
  9. Dan Knobbler of cbssports tweeted that teams can lose future picks by going over recommended slots. I hope like hell it's either wrong info, or picks that aren't necessarily all that high.
  10. I saw a quote from Cashman somewhere that basically said he's looking forward to finally being able to work trades with Theo. As has been mentioned in this thread, for me it'd take one of their elite young catchers and one of their elite young arms. If they offered us Sanchez and Banuelos for Garza, I think I'd pull the trigger. Of course, in the process, if you trade Garza right now, I don't see how it's really going to be feasible to "go for it" this year either. So you may wind up taking a mulligan on 2012, which doesn't really seem like it's something the Cubs want to do.
  11. Hell, I think it's stupid for the opposite reason as well. If a team doesn't want to spend money on signing international free agents, why should they be forced to? Just because some teams think it's the right way to do things, truly doesn't even mean it is. If a team wants to put their money elsewhere, they should be able to do so.
  12. According to Heyman, there won't be a hard cap on draft spending. But there will be recommended slots and teams that go WAY over will be paying luxury taxes. I guess we need to see the whole thing before jumping to conclusions, but my first thought is this could actually HELP us. Because it'll be the Royals and Pirates and other small market teams that start to get iffy about paying luxury taxes, not a major market team.
  13. Considering I'd have been OK with 6 for 200, if we're in this hunt at all, while 9 years is too long, 225 is cheap compared to what I was thinking.
  14. Nightengale just said they've re=engaged in talks, so I guess it's possible he just wants the Cards to come up a bit. Heyman just mentioned Prince's magic number is 8 years and 200 mill. No surprise there.
  15. Wouldn't surprise me at all. If the Cards meet the offer the Marlins gave him, it could be enough for him. Maybe being the highest paid player in history isn't all that important or maybe he's already gotten the picture it's just not going to happen.
  16. Van Dyck says we're unlikely to make good offer on Buehrle. Also says we're not really in the market for any big ticket guys. I disagree on that, but glad it's probably not Buehrle.
  17. Good. The longer this thing drug out, the more likely this would happen. But as far as IFA caps and floors, it makes zero sense. Some teams don't spend over there. And unless the cap is immense, how do you account for guys like Cespedes or even Soler? Do they just make less money now, because a team probably has to blow their entire budget on them? I'm really hoping this winds up a non issue, but something tells me we're not going to like this at all.
  18. Per Bob Nightengale. Don't guess this is a huge surprise, but quite a change from Hendry obviously. With the high price of starting pitching, I could see a team making a bigtime push for Garza. Same goes for Marshall. As we've discussed elsewhere, I can see Soto and Marmol getting plenty of play as well. Should be exciting anyway. What would it take for you to move Marshall or Garza?
  19. If we sign or trade for 2 starters this offseason, which is very likely, then Wells isn't making the rotation. Garza, Dempster, and Z all have a spot secured.
  20. A hard cap AND floor is going to be institutuded for IFA, according to a tweet from Melissa Segura. It had better be a humongous cap, or else Theo's advantages are going to take a major hit.
  21. If Randy Wells is on our roster by spring training, I think he winds up as our long guy/spot starter.
  22. Bowden projects 4 and 56 for him. Yeah, it's Bowden, but still, that's pretty damn scary.
  23. According to Sun Times article, Wittenmeyer says we are more interested in 19 year old Cuban OFer from Cuba than we are in Cespedes. He becomes a FA within a few weeks and evidently has the upside that Cespedes appears to have. The Yanks and Nats also appear to have big interest in him. He is expected to get a contract slightly larger than what the Rangers gave Leonys Martin earlier in the year. Which was 3 years and 15.5 mill. So this guy must be pretty damn good, at any rate. He definitely fits into what Theo wants to do, signing a guy or two like this helps the system out tremendously. Go get him Theo.
  24. Ian Stewart IS going to be tendered a contract. That said, teams have inquired and he's available via trade.
  25. We've had multiple discussions with Buehrle's agent, according to Jon Paul Morosi, via Twitter.
