My guess is we eat all but 5 mill and get Volstad in return. I'd like to get Dominguez, Arunato, or Rasmussen. But, unfortunately, I think this is a "he had to go" scenario, rightly or wrongly. I wish we'd keep him myself, as I think he'll have a solid season and probably be worth more at the deadline. On top of that, I'm kind of sad, because while he's a nutjob, he's been our nutjob. And he's certainly given us plenty of entertainment over the years. And some damn good pitching too, if we go back a little ways. For me, this one is sadder than Aramis. Oh well, hopefully we get more in return than what I'd think we do. As far as LoMo goes? I put the chances of him being in this deal as about as high as Mike Stanton's. Not the Marlins one, the one that used to pitch for the Yankees and Braves and has been retired for half a decade.

Out of that group, the only 4 I can see being legit players are Lawrie, Sands, Rizzo, and Stewart. Maybe Carp? I think Lawrie WILL put up an OPS north of .800 this year. I think Sands and Rizzo, if in the right situation, meaning they've got a nice lineup around them COULD put up OPS's around .800. That said, I'd expect closer to .750ish out of them. Stewart is a wildcard, but I'm expecting .725ish personally. Carp, probably about the same as Stewart. I wouldn't think anyone else on that list could break .650, given a full seasons worth of at bats.

His wife and kids are still in Boston. Probably didn't want to uproot during school year. He goes back for 2 days a week, I think is what I read. If anything, I'm glad he's working, rather than taking time off. His son turned 4 like 3 weeks ago. They don't want to uproot him from preschool? Well crap, maybe he's super advanced and a sophomore in high school? He is Theo's spawn, after all. At any rate, his wife hasn't moved yet.

If I'm looking at a floor for Brett, it'd be that he struggles so badly against lefties, he's the important part of a platoon. Without looking, but if he put up a .250/,340/,430 line for 120 games or so, I'd guess 2 WAR? I don't think this is what he'll do, but I think this is worst case, for his prime. -
Theo hasn't "intentionally set the bar low". What he's done is he's committed to following what he believes is the proper path to building a perennial powerhouse. Telling people we'll err on the side of the future, if we have to make a choice and mentioning signing bigtime contracts only make sense when we have a team that's ready to compete is EXACTLY that. Setting the bar low. I'm not disagreeing with it either. It's smart. Tempering expectations, while still giving out some hope is what he should be doing. But, it's not us, he's worried about, it's the meatball guy. The guy who either doesn't or can't see the big picture. That's who Theo has to convinve he's doing the right thing, for revenue purposes.

The last list I saw, Pena was the 58th pick in the draft. Aramis was like 43rd. Couple that with the 6th pick and the 65th(2nd rounder at last update) and it does two things: first, it'd give us 4 picks in the top 65, which is extremely valuable. Secondly, it'd increase our signing pool allotment. Teams with extra picks get a bump from their original apending amount. Gives Theo the ability to spend more on a few bigtime difference makes that maybe fall due to signability concerns. It's going to be extremely interesting to see how we approach the draft. I'm sure there will be some signability types, but I think we'll be one of the biggest risk takers out there.

Theo has intentionally set the bar so low, an elephant with gout and a torn ACL could jump over it. It's better to underpromose and overdeliver than the opposite.

Malave's winter has been followed at chicagocubsonline,com. Pretty sure Brett has posted updates as well. Acosta had an injury during Instructs and to my knowledge hasn't played winter ball. I don't think the injury was anything major though, if I remember correctly. Happened before games had even begun, I think. Pretty sure AZPhil said they were going to be cautious, is all.

My prediction on Sickels' grades, as far as guys being B-'s or better: only B+ is Brett. B's are Baez, Szczur, McNutt, and Torreyes. B-'s are Vitters, Hernandez, Maples, Rhee, and Castillo. Over 20 guys total are C+ or better.

It's a solid statement about our sysem, he had 48 names to start with. That's a good thing. He didn't even have Antigua and Whitenack on it at first either. The guys on my current top 40, that didn't make his list are Carlos Penalaver, Easterling, Burke, Malave, and Rusin. Thought Penalver COULD make his list, since Candelario was a cinch. Figured Easterling would be in there and possibly a C+ guy. But Sickels is an age/level/performance guy, so tools need to be more refined, I guess. Rusin's old and a low ceiling, so I understand that one. And I've got Malave on my list because of his performance at Instructs and his winter season, which Sickels isn't looking at. Burke doesn't have enough info out for Sickels to rank him either.

Yes. Yeah, but the pick we'll receive for losing him is more important than allowing him to be a stopgap for us. Sign anyone other than him, at this point, in my opinion.

Dombrowski says Turner isn't available and hasn't been looking for pitching. If so, I think it's likely Garza's a Cub in 2012.

I really, really want us to spend a ton on IFA over the next few months, not even counting Cespedes or Soler. There's a pair of lefty Cuban pitchers, Concepcion, who's been mentioned with us and Omar Luis. Who was the ace of their Jr National Team. Armando Rivero, a reliever who throws 98ish. The guy we considered drafting, Garcia Speck and another 5 tool OFer, Ramon Hernandez(not as good as Soler or Cespedes). Then looking at Latin America, there's the 2 hard throwers, Manuel "the hammer" Gonzalez and Mauricio Silva, who have high price tags supposedly. Shortstops Ronniel Demorizzi and Yairo Munoz, OFer Helsin Martinez, who was supposed to sign with Seattle, but it fell through and probably 15 other 16 or 17 year olds who expected to get solid low to mid six figure bonuses. If we trade Garza and Byrd, maybe make a few trades at midseason, sign Soler, and spend some serious cash on some of these guys(5-10 mill), we could literally be a top 3 system by 2014, at the latest. This is the last chance to do it too, so I hope like hell we're going to. Off to what looks like a promising start, with the first 3 guys, even without bonus info. Crap, forgot all about the Korean Borus signee as well, Hyuk Sung Han and any other Pac Rim possibilities.

Hell, I think that's probably the most likely scenario. Maybe even add in Smyly. Of course, if that's currently on the table, I'd think Garza is already a Tiger. But, if I had to list teams and offers that are likely to wind up being true, that's what I'd put Detroit's final offer at and it's also who I think we make the deal with.

I'm not so sure I wouldn't rather have Sanchez than Montero, considering Montero's lack of position. Sanchez could be a 30ish homer catcher with solid defense.

I think our passing game was pretty simple honestly. Roll Cutler slightly outside, set, and watch him make throws no one else can. Which was the downfall of Hanie, a guy who just had nothing remotely close to Cutler's talent.

The Saints have a ton of good FA this year, including Brees. Aubrayo Franklin, Tracy Porter, Marques Colston and Carl Nicka are all FA as well. Nicks is pretty damn good, much better than any of the OT's avaialble. Is adding him enough to make the line average? I like Louis and Williams actually. In fact, I was a fan of Webb. At least until these last couple of weeks. Carimi certainly looks the part, but I like him better on the right side, where I think he can be elite, versus being averagish on the left. Where on the line do we add? Or does it matter? Louis could become a floater, I guess, if Nicks is added. Maybe draft a LT early as well, 1st or 2nd round. Putting Webb on the bench, in the process. Or do you hope that the more experience he gets, the better he'll be? At any rate, Nicks and a number 1 wideout can and should be handled in FA, in my opinion.

This is going to get really interesting. If(God, we'd better) go outside the organization for a GM, would he promote Tice for one year? Then, if Lovie doesn't get us to the playoffs, bring in his entire new group of guys? That's kind of what I see happening, because why would an OC come here now, when it's obvious Lovie's going to be on the hot seat himself? Since a new head coach probably will want input on his staff. At any rate, I think we'll see an agressive approach, which is different than we've seen most years. Tons of cap room, not a lot of guys needing to be resigned, and even an extra 3rd round pick for a change.

Toonster, I wasn't all that enamored with Fernandez either. He kind of sounds like a future closer to me. That said, if they offered Yelich/Fernandez/Ozuna/Realmuto, it's probably as good of a package as we'll get offered. My main issue is it'd keep us from making a deal with a different team, while still leaving them an option of going a different route themselves. I hope if it comes down to something like this, we'd take a slightly lesser package, just to insure we'd have a deal for sure. Not to mention, their package would still leave our pitching a mess.
