  1. If the Cubs fall out of the race early on and fan apathy sets in, Rizzo and Turner could be brought up and sold as part of the future, possibly helping attendance figures later in the season.
  2. Are we allowed to go over 40 for any length of time? If not, hopefully the Garza deal goes down tomorrow. Cool to see Maholm sign, my guess is it's not a bad deal for us. 2 lefties in the rotation. As for that MLBInsider guy, what a joke. I'm sure he'll be saying HE broke it soon enough, same with any semblance of a Garza/Detroit deal.
  3. Hoyer is going to be on CSN's Chicago Baseball Hot Stove Talk tomorrow at 5PM CST with Kaplan. Hopefully, it's to talk about a flurry of moves just made......
  4. I want to hear something from Olney, Rosenthal, Heyman etc before getting too excited. I'd LOVE to hear Levine pop up and say this thing is close. So far, we've gotten Kaplan and nothing else. Even Brett mentioned Texas as wanting to get involved possibly if Darvish doesn't work out.
  5. Not good at comping, but if he hits his ceiling, .300ish hitter with 30 homers is probably fair.
  6. Kaplan just tweeted that Cubs/Tigers are a lot further than "initial discussions" in regards to him saying "pretty far down the road". OK Dave, thanks for the clarification.
  7. Considering the comments Ricketts in the past and Theo and Jed have made very recently about keeping Wood, allegiance to him, or not, it's something they all understand and want to happen. You don't say something to the effect of "it'll look bad on us, if we can't make this happen" unless you're trying your damndest. If Kerry has decided to pitch for a contender, then so be it. But, I'd bet anything, that we're doing everything in our power to keep him here. And that includes giving him more money than we probably should, given the state of our squad.
  8. The more I think about it, to get THAT good of a package from Detroit(and I agree with Toonster that it'd be the best one traded this offseason) we'd almost definitely have to be sending them a Vitters, McNutt, or Szczur in the deal. Even Theo couldn't pull something like this off.
  9. Toonster, It's a coin flip for me as for whether I'd take Castellanos or one of Crosby/Smyly. We need pitching moreso than hitting, Crosby probably has the most upside of the 3, but he's injuryprone and Castellanos probably has better value from a trade standpoint. Meanwhile, Smyly is the surest thing of the 3. Considering we've still got other parts we can move as well, I guess, gun to head, I'd take Castellanos. Then concentrate on pitching with any other deals. Plus, we can still go sign Concepcion, Omar Luis, and the big bonus Latin American pitchers to rebuild the system quickly too. Because outside of the big 2, the IFA market is pretty pitching heavy.
  10. We're at 40 and the Tigers 40 man stands at 39. We've likely got Maholm coming and maybe Wood as well. Crosby AND Turner are both on the 40 as well for Detroit. If a deal goes down with them, either a) it's not both Turner and Crosby or b) we'd be sending something else off our 40 man to them as well. They need a utility guy, Baker or Dewitt makes sense. My guess is Turner/Castellanos/Smyly for Garza/Dewitt. Leaves us room for Maholm. Although, I really think that's a better package than what we SHOULD be getting, just going off Kaplan's article.
  11. Here's a question: Would you guys take Turner going forward to have a better career than the combination of Smyly and Crosby? Reading through that article of success rates of BA's top 100 guys makes me ask this. I hate to say it, but from that article, I'd probably take my chances on the pair. Just a question though, because I really, really want Turner........
  12. If that's the deal we sign Maholm to, I don't have much of a problem with it. I'd still probably prefer Chen for the upside, but the difference is probably negligible at that point. My main concern, though, is that we'll give him 3 years with an AAV of $8-10 million in an effort to have a steady veteran in the rotation until we're likely to be competitive again. If that's the case, I'd take Chen hands down. Nah, I'm not worried about that kind of deal for Maholm. Not out of our guys right now. They're tip toeing in the shallow end for now. Other than the Cubans, I see no chance at us handing out more than a 2 year deal this offseason. My gut tells me we're going to get him for one and an option.
  13. In all honesty, if we got Turner/Castellanos/Crosby for Garza, I'd be stunned. Hell, if we got Castellanos/Crosby/Smyly I'd probably be fine with it. But if we got Turner, Castellanos, and either of Crosby or Smyly, it's time to bow down to Lord Theo. Please get this thing done.
  14. Yes, we ARE a major market team. And finally, we're showing responsibility that comes with it. When we have enough pieces, we'll spend money like a major market team should. Smartly. Not like what we had been doing. Which was spending blindly.
  15. I think Chen was shooting for 4/20, if I remember correctly. He's certainly younger, but IS an unknown, to an extent. I'm not going to get worked up over taking Maholm over him, unless we're giving Maholm more than 2 years. My guess on Maholm is either 1/6 with incentives and a mutual option or 2/12. I can't see us going more than that year or money-wise for him.
  16. Could be. The PSD insider guy said he heard this has been done for a couple of days. Plus, Jed seemed awfully sure we'd be adding to our pitching depth soon, after the comments he made recently too. I'd like to think we've got a trade brewing somewhere to open up a spot, but honestly, it's not like we don't have guys we can waive either.
  17. Fernando Martinez was put on waivers today. He's still just 23. Any interest? I know we're prospect heavy for CF, but still, he's very young.
  18. I was a proponent of signing Chen as well. That said, if he signed for that little AND with the Orioles, on top of that, makes me think we didn't miss out on too much. Seriously, I doubt the Orioles were anywhere near where he envisioned going. If we didn't think any more of him than that, I'm perfectly fine with letting him go elsewhere. Especially when all the other large market teams must have felt the same as we did.
  19. I thought people kept making the point that since we're not spending on big league payroll we could do something like pay out Soler a huge bonus upfront Yeah, it's actually me that's mentioned it. That said, I would think if it came down to it, they'd rather give him a 40 man spot, give him a really solid signing bonus and spread out the rest. He's supposedly ready for A+ Ball, from what I've read anyway. His price tag seems to keep going up though. Went from upper teens, to around 20ish and now maybe even mid 20's to 30 mill. If he actually signed for under 20, I guess we could pay it up front to keep him off the 40 man, but if it takes more than that, I'd think we'd just spead as much out as possible.
  20. For 40 man implications, if we signed Soler, I definitely think he WOULD be on the 40 man. He's going to require a huge bonus and giving him a 40 man slot is the only way to spead it out, instead of paying it all at once.
  21. Orioles on verge of multi year deal with Wei Yen Chen.
  22. Garza's now confirmed for Convention. Probably not likely he's dealt between now and then. Heyman says Rangers offering Dice-K money to Yu, no report of deal being close.
  23. Kerry knows how to negotiate, that's for sure. Saying he'll make his decision by Friday could put a real damper on the Convention, if he's going to be playing somewhere else.
  24. I guess all that's up to his agent though. Maybe he didn't want to say much, because Yu is happy over there? The rumor was either a) he wanted the highest posting fee ever or b) he didn't care about the posting fee as long as he got what he wanted. If it's b) then Texas is basically going to be over 30 mill per for the guy, if he actually wants 100 mill. He's a rockstar over there, so who knows? Maybe he wants to play in a different market? No clue, but I hope this rumor IS true, because I can't see Texas going that high for him.
  25. My guess is he'd rather play on a contender than be a mentor. Understandable.
