  1. The reason I like Toronto is because conceivably you could get McGuire(as close to a sure thing 3/4 as there probably is in the minors right now) Gose or Marisnick(bigtime upside CFers who could play or be trade bait) and one of Nicolino or Syndergaard(2 guys with 1 or 2 potential, but a long way away). The reason I like this type of package is it's got 1 guy you can pencil in(McGuire) and 2 others who could wind up as top 10 type prospects that could conceivably be dealt or used. Plus, the money saved could go towards more pitching as well. I totally understand wanting ONE bigtime guy who's close to the majors, but I'd rather spread out my cards a bit and feel our chances of getting a bigtime talent is safer by choosing the strength in numbers approach with the talent being further away.
  2. I see where you're coming from now. Bird in a hand basically. I just figure there's always going to be SOMEONE out there to trade for or sign, I guess. Can't remember an offseason where there wasn't good pitching available at all. Some of my reservations are because I don't trust Garza to be as good as he was in 2011, rightly or wrongly. But, I think Toronto, Detroit, and even KC all have packages I'd be very content with.
  3. I think that what we're attempting to do, by the way, is acquire as many top notch minor leaguers as humanly possible. Some of which will wind up eventually helping us, but most of who I fully expect to be dealt for young, cheaper major league talent. Then fill in a few spots with big money FA. But, I fully expect us to be the team trading for guys like McCutchen, Price, Upton(if he's ever available). Young, difference makers that are maybe unaffordable by the small market teams. So, when we have to "overpay" for a Lincecum, Felix, or whoever type, we've made it for it by getting great production cheaper in other areas.
  4. Personally, because I think Turner/2014 may be better than Garza/2014, especially when you've also got 15 mill extra to play with and spend elsewhere. Toronto is admittedly different, in my eyes, as the guys I really, really like are further away and possibly may be making their major league debuts sometime IN 2014. But, I think they have at least the same, if not more, upside than Turner, and my thinking is you could possibly get more than one of them, because of their being so far away. That said, I like them because they'd also become extremely valuable assets we could trade for an elite player at some point as well. More in line with contending in 2014, if they're not ready by then to truly help.
  5. I don't think I'm understanding this honestly. For me, those 2 guys are elite. Garza's very good. Neither of those guys will hit FA before we're contending most likely. We'd be paying Garza for at least 2 seasons(in my eyes) where we won't be contending. When the time comes to ante up for FA, I want and think we will certainly do it. But, it'd help us out even more, if a piece or two we've acquired for Garza has turned into another cheap asset that's a bigtime help for us.
  6. Part of me wonders if this means we'll be going very heavily after Cespedes and NOT Soler. Soler is also going to command a major league deal obviously, so I guess it's possible a team doesn't want 2 guys on their 40 man who are really 3-4 years away, in all likelihood. If Soler is signed by us, the 38 other spots will have to be used up very economically. Probably will lose an extra guy in the Rule 5 each year until these guys are ready. That said, Soler is still the guy I want the most. But I do expect the bidding to get crazy with him for sure.
  7. I don't want anything that was rumored from Boston or Toronto, so I don't care about them. You seem really intent on trading Garza for whatever the best offer is, and I'm really struggling to understand why. Yeah, I guess I am really wanting him dealt. I'll agree that Boston isn't ideal, since I want pitching in return. I disagree completely on Toronto though, I'd take a solid offer from them over anyone else's honestly. I like Turner alot, but I think a package from Toronto can easily beat Turner and Smyly or Crosby. My reasoning for wanting him dealt is we're probably not contending until 2014. He'll be 30 then, which isn't bad obviously, but I'm not sold that he didn't just have his career year either. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't trade him for less than what we gave up for him, in fact I want at least a little more. But, I think we're paying him 22-25 mill over 2012 and 2013 when we won't be contending,in all likelihood, and he may or may not be coming out of his prime and making even more money from that point forward.
  8. 96? I haven't seen that anywhere. I've heard 86-92, depending on when it was. I'll say this about Concepcion: Whether Goldstein, Badler, or whoever else thinks he's a 4/5 is irrelevant, because it's quite obvious we see him as potentially more than that or else we wouldn't have given him this kind of cash. No idea where I'd put him in my top 30, waiting til offseason's completely over since I still think we'll see more trades or IFA signings anyway, but I guess I'd almost have to put him somewhere in the top 10 for sure.
  9. I'm pulling for Oswalt to sign with Texas or the Cards, so Boston, Toronto, and Detroit are all still looking for a starter.
  10. I think it works the same, unless there's a provision in the contract that says otherwise. Like something that says arb won't be offered or something like that. Without having any clue on Concepcion, my guess is we gave him a 3 or 4 year deal and will then have the same type control we have over Shark right now, which is lowering his salary by 20 percent until he hits arb or just cutting him, if we wanted to.
  11. A report now is saying Kinsler showed up to try and get Hamilton to go home. I hope this is true.
  12. It's amazing how much better I feel about the Cubs front office, than I do the Bears or Bulls. Not even in the same stratosphere.
  13. Sorry, on cell, so no link. Rumors are Kinsler was with him that night too. Alcohol relapse, unsure if anything else happened.
  14. So, with this being a major league deal and with him being at Spring Training now, my guess is we'll see him begin his season at Daytona, instead of Peoria.
  15. I doubt it. With this being the last time guys like Soler and Concepcion will be available, their prices are going to be sky high anyway. I do think this means Soler probably gets 30 million, instead of 20 though. I don't think Cespedes will be affected all that much though. I'll set my over/under at 55 on him now though, but mainly because I think the Marlins will pay up bigtime for him. Soler's much more important for me anyway.
  16. Actually, I look at that in the opposite way: they must see him as VERY polished, to give him a 40 man spot. It also lessens his salary, leaving us even more to play with, for Soler, Cespedes, and any other IFA's. I will say this though: In giving Concepcion a 40 man spot, I seriously doubt we'll get BOTH the others now. Wouldn't give our 40 man a whole lot of flexibility, if we did. Unless we expect Cespedes to begin in the majors.
  17. Goldstein thinks money is too high. Of course, with this being the last chance to spend, it's going to get wacky.
  18. The bottom line though, is it's nice to 1)have an actual plan and 2)seeing it followed
  19. We evidently gave him 7 mill. Unsure whether it's a signing bonus or a major league deal, with it being spread out.
  20. For me, if we can trade Garza and sign Soler, this is damn near a perfect offseason for the plan that's been laid out.
  21. He has some stats from the same league Cespedes played in. Had a 3.30ish ERA, 53 K's in 101 innings and a 10-3 record. Was named ROY.
  22. Wow, Goldstein would put him 6th on his Cubs prospect list. That's much higher than I would have thought, so he evidently thinks pretty highly of him.
  23. Awesome. Interested to see the numbers, but obviously we view him more than as a potential 4/5, so this is great news. Shouldn't hurt when it comes to the other guys either.
  24. Cubs draft pool currently sits at 8 mill, according to Callis.
  25. http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/7747/source-garza-arbitration-hearing-friday?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter By the sound of this, we won't be reaching an agreement with Garza and are heading to arbitration tomorrow. Could be a good thing, since I don't see us losing the case at least. The lower his salary is, the better for some of these teams potentially interested in him.
