  1. I'm sure somebody already beat me to this on Twitter, but "We'll tweet whatever the [expletive] we want!" I laughed.
  2. Tillman has gained some velo back and is still 24. Britton may or may not be broke. Both were bigtime prospects at one point. Jake Arrieta has not done a lot in the majors yet, but has been worth over a WAR already this year, without looking, maybe he's been unlucky? At any rate, I don't trust the Orioles developmental side of things at all, so while these guys may hold some value, I'd want a different return for Dempster, with more upside.
  3. My guess is we'll maximize the return as much as we can. I could see us paying some salary AND sending whoever, a piece or two along with him that are controllable, if it means we get back the pieces we want. As an everyday player, we're finding out Campana sucks, but to a contender as a pinch runner/defensive replacement, he's got solid value. Pay some or all of the money left for Demp, send Campana, and I think we'll get a nice as hell return.
  4. Orioles can take Maholm and Soriano. I wonder if they'd part with either of Matusz or Arrieta for Dempster? I think the Jays scout watching us has to be wondering if it's a waste of time with them falling off and being riddled with injuries now.
  5. It's funny, but he's the EXACT guy I'd want from them. That said, I think he's taken a big enough step forward, that they wouldn't part with him. OTOH, I actually could see them trading Martin Perez at this point. They've really mishandled him and he's struggling in AAA for the 2nd year. But he's still just 21. His upside has probably morphed from a 1/2 to a 3/4 but he was still a top 50 prospect heading into this season. They have other young arms that have potential currently struggling as well in Luke Jackson, Neil Ramirez, and Roman Mendez. At any rate, they also have some solid bats, to where they're easily the team I'd love to see Dempster dealt to.
  6. BA has us at 310200 under slot, with Conway, Bruno, Heesch, and Krist accounted for. We know Prieto saved us an extra 57000 as well. Assuming Bruno must haved signed for right at slot, leaving Krist and Heesch signing for around 10000 each. Which means we can probably expect another 100k savings out of Martin.
  7. If Dempster pitches decently tomorrow, my guess is it's his last start for us. If there actually are 10 teams interested, might as well pull the trigger. I'd guess the 10 would be the Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, White Sox, Tigers, Rangers, Braves, Phillies, Pirates, and Dodgers. The Rangers, Tigers, Red Sox, Braves, and Dodgers are the teams I think we match up with decently for him. I doubt the Pirates and Phillies are truly buying yet, don't think the White Sox or Orioles have what we'd want and figure tge Yanks hold out until Garza, Hamels, Greinke, etc become available.
  8. Barney would be a very solid addition for Detroit.
  9. Pretty sure it was done to keep Dempster on his normal rest and give Shark an extra day.
  10. I like Jed and actually would have been happy enough, if he had been our main hire. But I don't feel bad for him, because he knew exactly who was going to be considered "the man" and he supposedly upped his salary from somewhere between 600-700k to 1.2 mill.
  11. Blackburn has probably signed. His girlfriend is meeting him in AZ next week. Gotta hand it to Yagyu, over at PSD for tracking most of this stuff down again. Granted, that was someone else who found that nugget out, but also a good poster. If anyone here actually POSTS regularly over there, instead of looking, Tim was right. Recruiting wouldn't be a bad idea. :D
  12. I'd love to have either of those guys, but I honestly doubt we make bigtime FA pickups until we KNOW we have lots more currently in place than what we do. I'm not saying it's even how I'd go about it, but with the extremely few "sure things" we have right now, I doubt our FO has a totally clear timetable on exactly when we will be close to contending. I guess we'll know more if Garza is dealt.
  13. If you signed a FA and he blocks a prospect, you trade one of them for something you need. You will never know exactly who your prospects are in the majors. My point is to let these guys come up and actually play and see who they are, then you add FA around them. Then you know exactly who they are and exactly what you need. And what if there is a weak FA crop when Theo decides to spend? Or if the time is right, then Theo can pass out Sorianoesque contracts and overpay middle relievers. FAs who are reasonably young and talented (Hamels, Upton, etc.) need to be signed when they're available, not when we wait for another 5-6 years to figure out whether our prospects are able to play at the ML level. Or you look more than a SINGLE year ahead. That may have been Hendry's MO, but I think Theo may, just may, be a tad different.
  14. I guess he was taking up Soler's 40 man spot.
  15. Part of what he's saying though, is actually going through the growing pains with a kid. Commit to Brett, for instance, and truly give him a shot. If he's 18-100, with 35 K's, stick with him and help him adjust. We actually have no clue whatsoever how Felix Pie would have done, if we had let him start for us for an entire season. It just takes something to click during instruction, an adjustment or two to be made and we could have a true asset, instead of a guy getting labeled a defensive replacement, without ever having time to see if he's got more. obviously, it's not going to work all the time, but I feel better about the instruction these guys will get now and I bet we do better at this type of thing than most do.
  16. I think Theo actually does have a "video game rebuild" streak in him. With the damn CBA, next year, the big draft allotment and the huge IFA budget will go a very long way. Theo probably valued that over winning 75-80 games. If we suck next year as well, having 2 seasons of those advantages would conceivably give us one of the absolute top systems around, both to play and use as currency. Flexibility and that likely means more than putting an average team out there and having middling allotments to get the same thing done.
  17. I think Hendry's offseason would have been signing one of Fielder or Pujols, keeping Aramis, trading Z in probably the exact same deal since there didn't appear to be any others, sign Edwin Jackson to a 4 year deal, add a couple of 2-4 mill bullpen arms, and probably unloaded the farm to get Cahill or Gio. Shark would be in the pen, LaHair would be in Japan, we'd have no flexibility going forward, and we'd be a .500ish team right now and in decline going forward.
  18. This deadline and offseason will be interesting as all hell. I think quite a bit hinges on Garza personally. How he pitches between now and the deadline and whether he's reasonable with an extension or not. And HIS fate is probably halfway dependent on how Shark pitches between now and then too. If he looks yhe part of a 3 or better, then Garza's chances of sticking around increase. If not, it doesn't feel like we're going to go out and fill multiple holes through FA. Not on a major level. But I can see our next spending binge hinging on Shark's next 8 starts. Because if we trade Garza, our window gets that much further away.
  19. Boise's rotation is Arias, Pugliese/Paulino, Scott, Dickson/Simpson, and Cruz.
  20. I feel pretty confident that when Theo took this job, he WAS going to spend huge. Thirty mill or so each and every year. But it would have been on the draft and IFA's, not a bigtime FA. Now, at some point, he's not going to have a choice, but to spend it on a FA instead. Not now, but at some point, when he's looking at all the surplus money leftover that COULD have been spent, sooner or later he'll decide to spend it obviously. Greinke? I love the idea of going after him if he came cheap, but I agree with Olney's idea of it only takes one theory in the end.
  21. The FA class is weaker than [expletive]. He probably won't make more than 2.5 mill or so and our payroll, looks to be at 75 mill, including arb raises for Castro, Garza, Russell, and Shark. It also includes us keeping Maholm. Who knows if Vitters can win the job by then? If ever? Stewart was unlucky early, then he's battled the wrist. Worst case is we have a guy with some pop off the bench.
  22. Go walk my dog, come back and see 5 posts in here......Bet my wife a dinner at Bonefish that Baez did something good. She tells me I'm a geek for following this stuff and I can take her to Bonefish for even mentioning it. But I was right. [expletive] Yeah!
