  1. So best case scenario (some admittedly not very far-fetched) for 7 guys? Not sure I'd technically say"best case", but improvement or stabilization, for sure. Castro doesn't have to put up a .850 OPS or anything. Curiously, other than the Schierholtz/Hairston platoon, do you see anything else I listed as actually being far-fetched?
  2. Shark, Castro, and Rizzo continue to show progress. E-Jax looks like a good 3. Wood or Villanueva show to be a 3 WAR type. Castillo solidifies himself behind the plate, Schierhoktz/Hairston give top 10 RF production platooning. Head into next year needing a CFer, a 3B(if ones not acquired for Garza) a TOR arm, and bench/bullpen help.
  3. John Arguello, of CubsDen, is at the KC game and chatted with Joe Boehringer about our prospects. He'll have a post up on it later.
  4. Oh well good to know, because that's important. A lot of people were preferring management to indiscriminately, irresponsibly throw money everywhere. Kyle is wanting a better bench and a better pen. Trying to be frugal is going to wind up as a crapshoot, where you hopefully find a few guys that may stick longterm. Adding truly proven bench or bullpen guys IS spending money just for the sake of spending it. Adding 5 wins or so to last year or this years team doesn't matter. When we have enough of a foundation(hoping next year) then adding a couple of 3 mill a year bench bats and 4-5 mill a year relievers MAY be a necessity. Hopefully not though, because it'd be much better to constantly fill those spots from within, to where the true bulk of your payroll goes towards impact guys.
  5. Shoulders was a top 10 round talent. Fell due to signability concerns. Didn't think he'd sign for as little as he did(294k) and figured the only way we'd sign him was if we couldn't sign Vogelbach.
  6. I think there are going to be a ton of surprises Thursday night. Evidently there are more injury issues than normal, so medicals could factor more than usual. The QB class is weak, but considering the importance of the position, teams will reach like crazy for them. Reports that picks 10-40 or so are all basically even talent-wise. It won't shock me if our mock only has half the projected 1st round, even get drafted in the 1st.
  7. Is there a study or anything that remotely resembles one, that can tell us the difference in how many wins a team would have with Joe Madden instead of Dusty Baker at the helm? I agree with the general premise here(managers don't matter a ton) but in extreme cases, are we talking 5-6 wins a year possibly?
  8. Damn whippersnappers! Think they're the bees knees with their giant calculators and electronical thingamajigs.
  9. I'll disagree somewhat. But since we don't know for sure what our payroll restrictions truly have been, you and I both already know where we'll take this. Lets just agree that next year is extremely important, under any circumstance.
  10. By my count, 19 of the 25 men on the current active roster were either acquired or promoted to the roster by the Epstein/Hoyer regime. It's time they start getting the credit for what's happening. You can also look at it from the standpoint that Hendry still has close to 40 mill tied up in Soriano, Marmol, and Garza alone. Those 3 account for over 35% of our payroll. At least we'll see Marmol drop off, Garza too or become part of Theo's decision at least, and with how we're playing Soriano is likely begging to be dealt.
  11. It's not going to hsppen. First, its not Sveum's call, second, there are no replacements anyway. I like Sveum. That said, this was stupid, whether there are true quotes out there or not. He's frustrated and hates struggling. Handled it wrong here. But everyone will get over it and this [expletive] will be kept in house.
  12. I still look at that trade as a win-win. But I have doubts Gonzalez lives up to his contract. I'm very interested to see Webster today. He's really getting talked up bigtime, guess we'll see if its just typical Boston/New York overhype or not.
  13. I actually think Crawford will be very good for them. That said, they're definitely snakebit. Billingsley has elbow issues now. Starting a season with 8 legit major league SP and inside the first 3 weeks, you're starting Stephen Fife. They're going to regret trading Harang.
  14. Due diligence, I guess. Gotta believe the only position player they'd even talk about would be Frazier. I hope we're truly down to Gray and Appel. Frazier isn't projectable and has a very good shot at winding up on a corner. Bryant isn't likely to stick at 3B, and Meadows has what some consider contact issues. I think Meadows would wind up being my choice among the hitters, at this point, but I'll be disappointed if we take a hitter anyway.
  15. Theo said Dale gets judged partially on win/loss record. Said they gave him a 69 win team to work with last year and they were on pace for that before the selloff. That said, we were likely a 75ish win team on paper heading into this season. So, he's got some work to do, in order to get into that range before selloff time this season. And yes, as I'm typing this, I fully understand the absurdity. Unfortunately, it is where we're at.
  16. Cool, fun day in the minors!
  17. And the Kansas city fox sports spent all game apologizing for airing it live. Lol. Damn, even the FCC tweeted they thought Ortiz said it perfectly.
  18. Tayler Scott's starting game 2.
  19. Thanks for the report Wekim. I'm to the point now that I'll be disappointed if we go any direction other than Appel or Gray.
  20. I love him so. SSS be damned. Goes with a 2B, BB and K on the day. Hard not to be impressed, lets hope its not just an unsustainable hot streak. It'd be really cool if he turns into another legit 1B prospect for us. Great outing from PJ too, fully expect he'll be one of the first guys to get promoted this year.
  21. He's definitely looking the part right now. I'm anxious as hell to get Almora back though. He won't have the loud tools obviously, but I bet he moves quicker once all's said and done.
  22. There's not much Cubs-related stuff I don't worry about. Vogelbach's power though, is among that small ass group though.
  23. Kemp's been beyond awful. Hanley's out. I think things are looking pretty good for them, all things considered.
