  1. You know Ian, you could have refused assignment and forfeited the rest of your 2 mill guarantee.
  2. http://www.latimes.com/sports/dodgersnow/la-sp-dn-dodgers-miguel-alfredo-gonzalez-20130606,0,5818743.story?track=rss 26 year old, high priced RHP Cuban defector about to be eligible? Dodgers interested, I'm assuming we are as well. Perfect age, go get him Theo.
  3. 90% of slot for 1.2 is $6,037,560, which would be a savings of $670,840. Don't forget the Cubs can go 5% over and not forfeit a draft pick next year - that 5% amounts to $527,825. Plus, they signed college seniors in rounds 8-10 last year for 10k apiece, giving them around 400k to spend on earlier picks. I could see them possibly going rounds 6-10 or 7-10 this year with the same strategy.
  4. I think its a fair deal, but I'd shy away from Olt myself, at this point. If a Rangers deal is to be had, I want CJ Edwards involved.
  5. I was thinking about the ISU kid yesterday, could the Cubs nab him in round 2? All depends on price tag. My honest guess is the Yanks spread some money around with their 3 early picks and take him.
  6. What a douche.
  7. If it takes full slot to get Appel, I'd do it. But I'd be slightly disappointed in having to do so. No one got that much last year, he's not the "uber prospect" type that should require that type of cash. I'd do it because I do think he's the top option after Gray's mess up. But picking this high in an averagish to slightly worse draft is definitely supposed to give us advantages for other rounds as well.
  8. No idea, but the logistics of trying to make the trade mid-draft seem pretty crazy. You've got 2 minutes between picks at that point, I think. I think it'd be a situation where the team with the pick has already agreed to make the trade, if a certain player is still on the board the other team wants.
  9. Very interesting. At this point I think I'd say Bryant if for no other reason than I think he'd be cheaper than Appel. Its still two Boras clients. It'll be interesting to see how things play out at 41 and 75. If we take guys we suspect will be huge overslots, that means we're getting 2 at a nice discount. The other option is we could take a few guys after the 10th round(lesser quality though) that would be huge overslots. This should be done in case Boras holds us up til the deadline. Personally though, at 2, I really hope a deal is already in place for both of our top choices. Boras needs us moving forward, since we'll be more active in FA, so hopefully he lessens his stance a tad here. The sooner we have enough of a system to trade from easily, the sooner we'll need his FA to accentuate the team with. I'll put the money at 2 like this(6.7 slot value) Appel-6 mill, Bryant 5 mill, Gray 4.5 mill......I know you guys will think this is light, but looking at last year, I truly think these will be close.
  10. Kane County's Twitter release still didn't mention Pierce as an All Star. That has to be a mistake, right?
  11. I really think we'll end up taking Bryant. No matter who is on the board. Gray's positive test can't help him with our FO valuing character so much. And I just can't completely get it out of my head that if they really liked Appel, they could have had him last year.
  12. Same. I have an issue with signing older guys to massive (think Pujols) commitments when you are going to get the majority of the value in the first 2 or 3 years of a deal and then be paying for that production for years thereafter, but otherwise, criticizing getting good value on guys for now is ridiculous. What the hell else were they going to do with the $5M they saved in 2013 by not signing Fujikawa? Or the $12 or w/e on Jackson? Use the money saved on Fujikawa to upgrade Jackson to Sanchez? 1/3 of season 1 of those contracts isn't about to tell the whole story. And from someone who's bitched about needing bullpen help more than everyone else here combined......You're trolling at about 10 knots.
  13. He's hitting .228 on a .300+ babip... it's worse than I thought That was before yesterday. He's at .245/.327/.404 currently.
  14. Nah, they really don't have much. They do have a comp pick and likely will have one next year anyway. Eduardo Rodriguez is a solid LHP prospect. I've never really been a fan of Jonathan Schoop, but he has his supporters. Outside of that, you get into Jake Arrieta and Zach Britton, who still have hope, I guess.
  15. Along with the homer, Brett went 4-6 tonight, no K's. K rate down to 26.1%.
  16. I've thought about Sheffield, but with the Baker and Vizcaino set backs, I wonder if the FO would just prefer safer territory than this, when plenty of other choices are out there.
  17. What a damn game. As a UNC guy though, I'm appalled at the use of pitchers.
  18. My current top 10 is..... 1. JAVY(non believers, the whole lot of you! :D ) 2. Soler 3. Almora 4. Johnson 5. Alcantara 6. Vogelbach 7. Candelario 8. Brett(won't hesitate to drop him soon though) 9. Villanueva 10. Paniagua(needs to pitch, but once he does I suspect he moves up this list) As for Appel, Gray, and Bryant? Each would be 4th for me. And I suspect we'll draft one other guy that'll hit my top 10 immediately as well.
  19. Gray doesn't have much room for extra weight at 6'4, 240.
  20. I think I want him more. Take him at 2 and get a bigtime discount on him. He's still a top 3 talent. Arguello mentioned Houston taking advantage this way. They may be able to get him for half of slot. I'd do it.
  21. Oh [expletive]. No clue what this means. Its certainly possible to have a plausible explanation. If he does, my guess is it doesn't affect him at all. However, if he doesn't.....Then holy [expletive].
  22. Just thought of this: May be outlandish, but anyway.....Is it against the rules for Boras to only give Manaea's medical info to certain teams or if he gives them to one, is it then a requirement to give them to whoever asks? I'm asking, because we were certainly very high on him at one point. There are very few teams that have the ability to give him the kind of money Boras will want for him. And without knowing, the fact he's from Indiana makes it plausible at least, he may be a Cub fan. If he's healthy, taking Bryant at 2 and saving some money(signs for 5ish?) could get us Manaea at 3 or so(still top 10 money) and give us 2 of the top 7-8 players in the draft. With 3 mill or so left in the budget for more. Likely that Manaea is just messed up and doing his best Matt Purke imitation, but with Boras, who knows?
