  1. Good job in getting a 1st, especially one that could wind up being a high one.
  2. White flag time. Deng for Bynum and a pick.( my guess is its not a 1st)
  3. Wow, what a [expletive] game.
  4. Not that I am worried about this, but didn't the league take cap space away from the Cowboys and Redskins a year or so ago for moves that they made during the uncapped season. If I remember correctly, the teams were mad because not only did their moves follow the rules of the season, but were also approved by the league at the time. Wasn't there a ton of prior warning from the NFL about not front-loading contracts in the uncapped year? Yeah, there was. Some perspective of what Jay's deal can technically do: the Saints gave Bree's a 37 million dollar signing bonus a couple of years ago and pro-rated it out over the length of the deal. If we turn Jay's 22.5 first year salary completely into a signing bonus, it'd be possible to turn his 22.5 cap hit into less than a 4 mill hit, opening up over 18 million to play with.
  5. Good footballing.
  6. Without even informing any of Jay, TJ, or Slauson, we have the ability to turn their money into signing bonuses to lower our cap number, if we see FA we want and need money to get them. 5 years from now the League will severely reprimand us for the work of our "cap genius" With the quotation marks around cap genius, are you not in favor of this? Or do you like Cliff a lot? I'm 90% joking around. He seems to be doing really innovating things to get guys under contracts everyone loves and the Bears fan in me just dreads it all going bad. And by going bad I mean being uncovered as illegal or not allowable. Ah, understandable. I'm assuming all teams have a guy doing stuff like this, but I don't know that for sure. But yeah, I guess it could face ramifications at some point. But the league has to approve the deals immediately, don't they? To me, the possible negative is Emery over-using it and getting us in horrible shape a few years from now. But I doubt he'll just flat out abuse it honestly. That said, my offseason outlook did just change...... I now expect to keep 2 of Wootton, Melton, and Ratliff. Plus add a top tier S in FA, one of Byrd, Ward, or Whitner AND one of Johnson, Bennett, or Joseph as well. Along with no issues in keeping Britton, Bowman, DJ, Garza, McCown, and Collins.

  8. It's an automatic conversion clause for cap purposes. Creates a "use as you go" situation. "The player and club agree that on one or more occasions and at any time during the duration of the contract, the club shall have the right, but not the obligation, to convert any portion of the players paragraph 5 salary, roster bonus and/or other amount set forth in this contract to signing bonus. Paragraph 5 refers to base salary, by the way. At any rate, this could change things dramatically, as depending on how crazy we want to go, we can certainly afford multiple players, if we want to go that route.

  10. http://my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-78799102/ Cliff Stein FTW This is great, to say the least.
  11. How do we feel about Briggs moving forward? It seems as if he's unhappy to begin with. He's also older and showed signs of breaking down somewhat. Is he tradeable? If so, I can't see us getting more than a 5th or 6th back. But you'd also get the full use of his 6.5 mill salary to use elsewhere. If you cut him, he'd have a mill cap hit, but you'd save 5.5 by doing that. How integral is he now? Emery spoke of adding leadership, so getting rid of Lance certainly is the opposite of that. But that extra money could go towards helping the D obviously. Too much turnover in one year for the D or feasible?
  12. Oh man. Hope everyone's okay. Where did you hear this? I can't find anything on the Google. The DPL tweeted it.
  13. Close enough. Bushrod = a DE. It'll be either Michael Bennett or Johnson IMO. If Johnson is possible, then so is Hardy and I'm not sure why we aren't mentioning him? Is Hardy going to get that much more $$$ than Johnson? Bennett = a CB or S. I think it'll be towards a S since we already re-sign Jennings and then draft a CB early. Not sure if Bears will take a chance on Talib, but Emery does sign guys with character/off the field issues. Slauson = a DT hopefully. Bears should double up on DL in FA like they did on OL last year and still draft one early. Hardy will get franchised if they can't lock him up longterm. No way he's going anywhere.
  14. Smart dudes know how to toe the company line, right? Sure, but if the NFL doesn't want you around(conspiracy obviously, that can't be proven) do you go against them? The other question is how it affects your locker room. And yes, this IS stupid, but it's unfortunately the way things are in the NFL. Maybe everyone IS fine with it, but maybe I just don't have enough faith in humanity, I doubt it's the case. In fact, didn't Briggs say something silly a while back? Is Rhodes good enough to take a chance on if it actually pisses off some guys already on the team? If it possibly affected the way even one future FA could potentially look at the franchise? I'm all for signing the guy, but there are plenty of meatball players out there that would need to be considered. It's not the NFL front office telling people to stay away from him. That's not how this works. It's not going to affect the locker room in a meaningful way. Everybody who has every played in the NFL has played with gay teammates. I agree with the second point, but I doubt we can say everyone knew it. I'm not much into team chemistry, but if making a move like this affects the chances of even one meaningful FA consider coming here, is Kerry Rhodes a good enough player to do that for?

  16. Some Cub players were evidently in a car crash in the Dominican. Frandybde la Rosa is in the hospital.
  17. As smart as Emery and Trestman are, I doubt Rhodes is an option, since it appears he's been blackballed. If they were smart wouldn't they be more likely than the rest of pick up the "blackballed" player that the rest of the league is ignoring? What would be so smart about following along with the rest of the sheep with Rhodes? I think what he actually meant is despite how smart they are...otherwise it doesn't really make sense. Ohhhh, I see. I just meant that they're very smart, just figure that they won't break NFL "code", if Rhodes is truly blackballed.
  18. As smart as Emery and Trestman are, I doubt Rhodes is an option, since it appears he's been blackballed. To get him on a minimum level deal though, would be awesome. My guess is one of Johnson or Joseph, to pair with Whitner or Ihedigbo.
  19. Yeah, each move individually has made sense and you can see why it was made. As we'll be able to say about a Hammel/Baker type move too. But as Kyle said, the talk of adding young power arms has halted, due to our valuation of Shark, I guess. I guess I want to see Iglesias and some more late July 2nd signees. Hell, NEED to see those things, if we've got nothing else going on.
  20. Walter is in the midst of posting theirs. They've gotten skill positions done so far. They rank in order and give star ratings, along with comments for anyone that gets 2 or more. All in all, they're fairly close on rankings, in my mind and do the best job. Bleacher Report has an oddly decent list to go from currently. http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/1908126-2014-nfl-free-agency-a-primer-for-this-years-free-agent-crop
  21. Between Olt, Valbuena, Ryan Roberts, Javy, and Alcantara, maybe even KB- there's enough decent possibilities and scenarios out there, that I'll be stunned if Barney gets anywhere near that many PA.
  22. Still, $22.5M this year will make it tough to rebuild the defense quickly without relying solely on the draft. Last year we added Bushrod, Martellus, Slauson, DJ, and Anderson for 8 mill total in cap hits over their 1st year. We've got plenty of room to make impact type moves.
  23. Pirates have top system in baseball from BA. Not sure if we talked about this previously or not, Badler had kind of mentioned this a month or so ago. Sickels hasn't released names, FWIW, but has us with 2 Grade A, an A-, 2 B+, 2 B, 5 B-, and 9 C+, yet calls us top heavy. Evidently he's now listing all July 2nd types as straight C's. As a side note, the Red Sox have less B- and higher grades and two more C+ or higher grades overall, and instead of "top heavy" they get a "very deep" comment.
  24. Slauson gets 12.8 over 4 years, with just 4.9 guaranteed. No idea about initial cap hit yet, but thats a good value for us overall.
  25. I can't see us spending any money at C. Jay has mentioned wanting Garza back, my guess is we get him cheap on a one year deal. If not, my guess is we'll go with Taylor Boggs and a mid to late round pick.
