  1. I was thinking the same thing. There are some teams that it'd legitimately be hard to continuously pull for over time. I've complained about being cheap at times, but that may have been Angelo moreso than McCaskey. Says the guy on a Cubs message board. I think it's fair to say the Cubs are legitimately hard to continuously pull for over time. Just because we're Cubs fans don't mean we aren't glad we don't have the same situation with the Bears. Ha. It's not easy, but I agree with the direction, which is quite a bit of the battle for me. For MLB- the Phillies, Orioles, Mariners, and Marlins would be the four that if I had grown up a fan of, I'd be having a hard time with. Phils at least won a title to ease the pain for them though.
  2. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1361172.html Yankees going to spend a [expletive] ton on IFA next year. Could turn MLB towards an IFA draft quicker and keep us from going all in again.

I think my main gripe was more of a weird allocation of funds by Angelo than a true lack of spending.

  5. What FA that we have would bring back a comp pick? Cutler obviously, but if he leaves, he won't just walk. Would Tillman or Melton? Or do the injuries keep them from getting us one? Jennings would, but I want him back. Can't see anyone else getting us one.
  6. If Cutler isn't a Bear in 2014(I think he will be), it'll be because he was dealt, not because they let him walk. Alex Smith got back a return of 2 2nds. Jay would definitely bring back more than him. Worst case for me is we franchise him to trade him. No, we won't get back two 1sts, but one plus other picks is feasible. Not the scenario I want or think will go down, but certainly more likely than us letting him walk.
  7. Wouldn't that also have implications for them beyond next season? Yeah, but they'll lose some salary next year as well. Weaker free agent class too, they could just make next year the one they reset with, since the class is even weaker than this years.
  8. http://www.csnchicago.com/bears/could-bears-re-sign-jay-cutler-end-week It 'd be really nice to get this done extremely quick, so you know your cap situation for other holes.
  9. If the Yanks wind up having to pay A-Rod, they can still add a pair of SP for around 35 mill per year combined and pay less in luxury tax than what they did in 2013, even with the higher percentage owed.
  10. Great breakdown. Shows how bad of shape the D is in, considering Paea, Bostic, and Briggs are the only 3 guys under contract I feel comfortable penciling in as starters. Without knowing who actually hits the FA market, I guess it's a balancing act with Peppers. Can we upgrade from him, after cutting him, for no additional money or even a savings? I think one of Ratliff or Melton will be back and could see us spend a top 3-4 round pick at DT as well. If Peppers is cut, I'd think his replacement is found via FA. Definitely think DE is addressed early in the draft. I figure one of Williams or Anderson will be kept and nothing major being added via the draft. At CB, I think Jennings will be back, but not Peanut, who I kind of wish would be kept as a S. Still, I see CB being addressed both in FA and in the draft, probably with an early pick. Unless Tillman is put at S, I see us adding 2 thru FA, stopgap types, since I doubt we'll be able to afford much more than that.
  11. I think Jay will be back and on a longterm deal we're all very happy with. Keep Slauson. Draft D for the most part. Let Tillman go, keep Jennings. Bring Melton back. With what's out there and the cap hit it'll take to cut him, the biggest question mark in my opinion is whether Peppers is back or not? At any rate, I think we're in very good shape myself.
  12. No way. Not how I would have them ranked, but how I could see BP doing it. Parks said CJ would be near the back of the Rangers top 10, they've got 6 top 101 guys. Parks also has an affinity for young guys in the lower levels and has been complementary of Candelario previously. Again, not how I'd rank them, but I can see BP doing it.
  13. 7 Cubs currently in BP's top 101. Interesting, since Parks isn't a fan of CJ. My guess is he made it anyway, with PJ also making it. We know the other 5. My dark horse is Candelario over CJ though.
  14. Both the offense and rotation have upside, at least. Kind of hard to complain about quality infield depth too, when any or all of Javy, KB, Alcantara, and Villanueva could make their ML debuts in 2014. I'll admit to wanting another OFer myself though. If our group winds up out producing more than a quarter of teams in the majors, I'll be surprised. Not expecting Tanaka at this point, but definitely expect Baker, Hammel, something like that added, maybe 2 guys like that. Help the depth anyway, even if its averagish.
  15. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy about it, but gotta admit I was expecting something bigger than that.
  16. Peanut retiring? PFT speculation.
  17. Parks bias against Cubs prospects, Javy in particular, in full effect. He's got Javy in his overall top 5.
  18. It's going to take multiple questions at the convention, if we're to get any light shed on his lack of funds and the debt structure. The first answer will surely be some semblance of a canned, rehearsed, stock answer. Then someone needs to bring up things in detail and ask for a more pointed answer, since there are definitely glaring warning signs out there.
  19. http://www.azcentral.com/community/mesa/articles/20131226mesa-steps-push-develop-wrigleyville-park.html So, more twiddling of the thumbs on our part, I guess?
  20. Ed Lucas of the Marlins on Twitter......"I asked Santa for more power this year, but he brought me intangibles. Sigh. I get intangibles EVERY year." Tweet of the year?
  21. Not as good. Similar but with less velocity, as I understand it. Considered a legitimate 2. By scouting standards, which would place him around the top 20 SP's in MLB.
  22. For luxury tax purposes, I think contracts go by the average and not individual year, don't they?
  23. Could work the opposite though: I could also see him wanting 8-10 years.
  24. So the 24th date is the last day to get him to agree to sign with you? Yeah, that's when he needs to have signed.
  25. Actually, there is no formal posting that everyone meets. Just negotiate and if Tanaka wants to sign with you, you fork over 20 mill to Rakuten.
