  1. I wish there was a way to actually know. I didn't think there was anything actually WRONG with Renteria. But do I think we'd be where we currently are with him instead of Joe? Nah, I honestly don't. 20 games is insanity, but if we hadn't gotten off to a solid start, it's possible we wouldn't have burned a year on Schwarber, for instance. In-game he's solid. Probably as good as anyone I remember managing us. I think I like the lineup construction as much or probably more than anyone else. The unquantifiable stuff counts for SOMETHING, but I have no idea how to do it. Nor if it'd have taken effect so early in the season that it helped shape some of what's happened post ASB. At any rate, certainly happy as hell we've got him.
  2. How exactly is a $300 million payroll cautious? How much of that commitment was made int he last 10 months? No idea, but if they have a $300 million payroll I also have no idea how you can accuse the GM of being cautious. Really? Come on. The vast majority of their payroll was inherited. They're not capped even now. He had the ability to grab Lester or Scherzer this offseason-he chose McCarthy and Brett Anderson. He could have spent serious money on the pen-he absolutely didnt. He had the ability to add a frontline SP at the deadline(and bullpen help too). He got Wood and Latos. Not saying those are bad moves, but if you've got a team in the middle of their win curve, led by 2 pitchers on top of that, I think it's extremely fair to say he's been cautious. They need an elite addition or two, definitively have the ability to do it. And have not. That's cautious.
  3. Part of me wonders if Friedman can handle having unlimited spending ability. I know that sounds dumb, but he's been so disciplined in the past, it makes me wonder if he'll make some of the moves they need to make. They needed to grab one of the elite SP's at the deadline. With where their team is at age-wise and all, missing out on all 3 of them was a true failure for them, in my eyes. Prospects for them are interchangeable with all the money theyve spent/will spend on IFA's. Even worse though, was their lack of adding elite pen arms over the offseason, when it had bit them the year before. Andrew Miller should have been a must get for them, but they didn't come close to matching the Yanks for him when they should have. If not him, they should have spent on others. He's made some moves utilizing his monetary advantage and its possible that in 2-3 years his roster will look ungodly. But he's been fairly cautious so far compared to what they've got the ability to do.
  4. Almora went 6th, Javy was 9th. They certainly acted as if they loved Almora, but I don't remember them saying they'd have taken him 1st. They gushed over Correa on his Wrigley visit, I remember thinking he's their top guy based on a few comments. There's a story I saw recently on Twitter that said when Theo went to see Schwarber, as soon as he saw the short, compact swing....He told the scouts there with him to go home, we've got our guy. Don't remember which Cubs Twitter guy brought it up, it'd be cool if it were true.
  5. Looks down on them in the standings We're set up great. I'm only responding to the ability to spend. They've got the rest of MLB by a mile in THAT aspect.
  6. While we're out buying a rooftop building here and there, the Dodgers group is out spending 350 mill on a production company, the LA Sparks, a Global Media company and are looking to buy a Sports TV channel, among other things.
  7. Francisco Garay.....Name to watch for us in the future. May need to get the K's down a bit though. Has 96 of them of them in 198 at bats. Does have 13 walks and a nice line of .126/.190/.146 on the season. I think this may defeat Carlos Henry for our worst player of all time.
  8. In Dave Cameron's chat yesterday, he said a "close friend in the game" put an Eric Hinske comp on Schwarber. I now made each of you dumber for having read that.
  9. Bosio has his hands full with our version of HHH. Leave him be.
  10. My concern(if there was one) was him going back to Boston once Lucchino left. Now that that's not a possibility, where can he go? The Yankees? I can't see it myself. And I don't see any other gigs with the cache needed that'd lure him away.
  11. From most reports, he wants to play next year actually. He's got a ring-it's not how I'd go about things, but if he's stuck on ONLY wanting to go to California right now and even then, ONLY if he's guaranteed playing time, I can understand his viewpoint. He knows he's going to start minimum 4 times a week where he knows he's comfortable currently. If he's looking for a decent deal next year, he may value comfortability as his best shot at accomplishing that. Since he's got a ring, he evidently isn't incensed by the need to ring chase at this stage of his career. I'd look at things differently, but I guess I see where he's coming from.
  12. How about the one that went off the 1B, barehanded by the 2B, then thrown to the diving P for the out at 1B? Can that be topped?
  13. I still feel confident that Soler is going to be just fine. I was definitely having a brain freeze as to why Russell wasn't counting. The really fucked up thing though is if Houston hadn't taken Correa, it seemed extremely likely he was falling to us at 6 that year. On a different note that's being touched on in the minor league forum, Almora is at least attempting to put himself back into the conversation himself.
  14. It seems like the correct way to approach that, but it's just not. Lucius Fox is the perfect example. He was heading towards being an extremely late 1st rounder to early 2nd round draft pick this past season, from a talent standpoint. 1.5-2 mill slot type guy monetarily. He petitioned to be taken out of the draft and put into the IFA class instead(he's from the Bahamas) and was granted it. He got 6.5 mill that way. 3 to 4 times what he'd have gotten in the draft. The reason for this? Teams feel more comfortable punting an IFA class or two and going "all-in" on one. Much easier to get lucky in scouting 15 year olds than it is once they get even a few years older too, so who's to say you're even punting? At any rate, the penalties show that they're way too harsh with the draft, since no team has done it. On the IFA side though, teams just see it as a loophole and multiple teams go over whenever they can.
  15. Just look for guys with at least six figure bonuses. As much as I love following prospects, it's easier to just do that for now and once scouting reports on others pop up on occasion once they hit the complex league, you can start adding them in then.
  16. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/philadelphia-phillies-chase-utley-trade-rumors-could-stay-in-philly-081615 Evidently, he wants the West Coast and doesn't even care if he's dealt at all. By the sounds of things, he's not that interested in the Cubs. I doubt we'll be shedding any tears.
  17. According to RotoWorld last night, the expectation is he'll sit today and be dealt before they play again. Personally, I have no clue how to value him.
  18. We have a pretty strong rotation with 2-3 guys that can slot into that role if needed. Posters are as unreliable as pitching with the carpal tunnel. Tim has built up some much needed depth with high draft picks and trial/error over the lean times.
  19. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=13443025&ex_cid=sportscenterTW&sf11997093=1 Proverbial puff piece on Maddon. Could have put this anywhere, but damn.....So happy we got him.
  20. That's just the 2nd HR in 81.2 innings Blackburn has given up. He's given up 2 runs or less in 10 of his last 11 starts. Finishing up very strong.
  21. He's a better option against LHP than Coghlan, so there's that. As for the "hate," other than BigSlick's post, I see people on Twitter bitching every time he's in the lineup. And Duke, he's never hit for power so it's not like we should've been expecting that. I don't know who you follow, but I swear I don't think I've seen a single person bitch a single time all year when Denorfia is in the lineup.
  22. @TommyBirch: I-#Cubs manager Marty Pevey said that Arismendy Alcantara left the team to be with his mom who is having surgery. Should rejoin soon. #MiLB
