  1. I don't think there's anyone here who is fawning over him, but I'll admit I don't like seeing a lot of teams Plan B come off the market before the big guys do. If we are truly in on Price or Greinke, this could help push them a bit higher.
  2. #Tigers in discussions with Jordan Zimmermann, sources tell @ken_rosenthal and me, with multiple people saying talks have become serious. Since we've been connected to him, figure he gets a thread.
  3. Not that I thought there was a remote chance at a Dodgers type deal, there's definitely not after the Phillies just agreed to a 25 year, 2.5 billion deal to stay with Comcast this year.
  4. Back loading or deferring to keep the 1st year of salary down is how I think they'll accomplish it.(signing bonus too) Even if they go big on Price, structuring it like Scherzer last year saves a ton off the 1st year of payroll.
  5. I'm kind of going off the Gordon reports. But if we added him and dealt Soler, it'd still just leave CF as the hole. If we added Heyward, I have doubts they'd want him in CF everyday and with his CF defense not being a given, having him bookended by Schwarber and Soler or Coghlan seems iffy to me on an everyday basis. That said, if you got creative and played him in RF some, used KB or Javy some in the OF.....You'd just need to find a 4th OF that is solid enough defensively. At any rate, I think if we're operating on 130 mill, we'll be able to address our needs. Back loading, deferring, trading off Wood, Hammel, Coghlan.....We've got room to add a Heyward/Gordon type, a Shark/Lackey type, a traded for starter and find a stopgap OF.
  6. Why is it assumed that Soler will be traded? I think if the Cubs were so willing to trade Soler, he'd probably be gone already. I think he's a better trade chip than Javy currently and figure that if the Cubs are focused on improving OF defense(as Theo has mentioned) then he's the logical guy to go. I can't see us saying that, leaving Schwarber/Soler on the corners and finding anyone who's likely good enough in CF to compensate for that myself.(maybe JBJ). Plus, the Alex Gordon rumors make it appear as if we're not set on the corners too. And I don't see Schwarber going anywhere, so that leaves Soler. With Gordon/Heyward or whoever likely being an answer.
  7. For some reason, whatever pitcher it is we trade for, I think it happens in lightning quick fashion, coinciding with a signing of Gordon/Heyward. Unless we trade for a guy without Soler being involved. As for Miller, I doubt we'll value him high enough to meet what Atlanta wants for him. My guess is he'd fall below Carrasco, Salazar, Ross for us.
  8. No idea where to put it, but Toronto just signed JA Happ to a 3/36 deal. Biggest signing so far obviously.
  9. They're a contender with money to spend, they're in the NL(which is a preference) and they're even in the west(which also seems to be a preference for him).
  10. Those days are over. Too many teams value the draft and there'd be plenty of teams willing to spend on the top 50/100 types that plan on going to school. Of course you could find ways to spend 25 mill, but its not likely to become anything close to a wise investment. You'd be signing 5-10 guys that aren't top 2-3 round talents and making them forego college.
  11. There's no way the Dodgers are dropping from 300 to 200 in one off season. I can see them dropping down gradually, getting there once a few of Crawford/Ethier/Gonzalez start to fall off the books. That said, if I were guessing today, I'd have Price and Cueto in Boston, Greinke in SF, Zimmermann in LA and us with Shark, one of Gordon or Heyward, and a Soler trade that nets us a controlled arm.
  12. I either forgot or didn't realize Price and Ortiz are enemies. He wants to hit and he wants to have fun. Between those things, I'm going to laugh my ass off when Boston offers that and then he still comes to the NL.
  13. I can't see how they could stop it. Not picking in the top 5 twice in a row would help, but to me, it'd just make teams even quicker to trade guys off that aren't clearly inside their projected window. To me, things were much better prior to this CBA. Just go back to it for draft/IFA stuff. There's always going to be teams overspending. At least before, the small teams were able to do it easier than they can now.
  14. Mark Bowman ‏@mlbbowman 25s25 seconds ago Sandy Springs, GA The #Braves have agreed to a one-year deal with veteran starting pitcher Bud Norris. Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 44s45 seconds ago bud norris gets $2.5M on 1-year braves deal Pretty solid signing, imo. I was hoping for him as depth at around that same price. That said, I'd say most of these guys would prefer a guaranteed spot and the Braves can probably offer him that.
  15. The strength in numbers approach on the bullpen is fine by me. I'm not sure that even if we had the money to spend, that this isn't typically going to work out as well or better.
  16. It seems to be much slower this year than most to me. It seems like relievers are signed by now at least, with some 2nd/3rd tier starters. I expected Monday/Wednesday to be big news days this week with the rest of the week being dead. l definitely think mid January usually has a couple of big names out there, but I think the busiest time is the Winter Meetings thru Dec 23rd. I think the league offices are closed the last week of the year- I think things are relatively quiet usually that week before picking back up in early January.
  17. Sanchez' report on Morejon is MUCH better than Barker's. 91-93, plus command, plus makeup, throws 4 pitches......With one scout saying he's the best arm available in IFA or the 2016 draft.....
  18. I'll gladly take talent of any age. It's not ideal for it to be 16 years old obviously. But if he's a candidate talent-wise to go 1-1 in the upcoming amateur draft and we get him, I'll be plenty excited. We NEED pitching, we may see a few breakouts this upcoming season if things work out right, but we're lagging behind in that department. I want as much Cuban pitching as I can get out of Ruiz, Gutierrez, Morejon, Perez, and Bolanos.(not to mention a guy like Sierra, who's unrestrcited to the IFA rules) Hitting is gravy as far as I'm concerned at this stage of where we're at, especially after getting EJM, and the likelihood the Dodgers pay insane amounts for the Ona's and Armenteros' of the world.(I'd be thrilled, just not expecting it) At any rate, adding as many of these guys as we can is very important to me. We're picking near the end of the draft this year(or hopefully not at all) and the talent won't be like what we've grown accustomed to. Adding guys like this, that'd be considered 1st round talents helps us out a ton. And it seems that they're on our radar by Theo saying we're looking at adding pitching to all levels of our organization.
  19. Oh noes! We'll go from being an expected 95 win team with plenty of assets to a 90 win team with plenty of assets.
  20. .@BenBadler has more notes on where Cuban players could end up, including Alfredo Rodriguez https://t.co/RVOzZpMT3p https://t.co/ya7wX3EVwa Badler mentions the Reds as the likely team for SS Alfredo Rodriguez. In much more important news, he lists US the favorites for P Adrian Morejon(please become eligible). He lists the Dodgers as being in on basically everyone but does expect us to continue signing guys too.
  21. Eh, kind of? He ran with Mendy being in the Shark deal 2 years ago. But he's broken things since(including being the first to say there was a Cubs/Rangers trade a few days ago) and is basically as reliable as most at this point. If you follow ALL the rumor guys, you should probably follow him too.
  22. The Dodgers have not only spent 88 mill on this IFA class(so far), they've also traded AWAY their actual slots in the process. I think I read somewhere today they've spent more on this, than 5 teams did on payroll in 2015. I have no idea what other bids were out there on Diaz and Estevez, but looking thru the teams, I find it extremely hard to believe anyone else was even remotely close. There's no doubt in my mind that a draft is coming after this. Unfortunately, there's also no doubt in my mind that it'll be set up horribly.
  23. Choose one for your leadoff hitter...... Player A .247/.386/.497 with a 14.7℅ walk rate, 12.9%K rate, and 63/71 SB, but just had a finger and a toe bitten off by a diseased raccoon Player B .334/.371/.422 with a 5.3% walk rate, 8.5%K rate, and 92/96 SB but has been diagnosed as a standing sleeper recently Player C .286/.378/.462 with a 11.8% walk rate, has never struck out and is 3/77 in SB, but weighs 498 pounds and has it in his contract that he is allowed to forward roll or cart wheel on steal attempts due to his love of beginning gymnastics. Yes, this was a stupid exercise. But so is trying to explain that Jason Heyward is a great leadoff hitter to that guy, especially once he turned into a prick about it.
  24. I want the Greek Godliness of leadoff hitters. Taiwan Easterling or bust.
  25. Man, as far as the signings.......Pretty depressing. That's some serious money and its obvious they're not stopping. I think we truly stole EJM at this point. He signed while the Dodgers were in between IFA regimes. One reason they switched was because they weren't happy with what they'd gotten out of their signings, versus the money they'd spent. Oh well, its not scared them off spending. I think I'm to the point of just hoping we get 1 of Ruiz or Gutierrez and a lesser pitcher. After seeing them do this, I think it may be best to just hope the guys not eligible yet, stay that way until the following signing period. I don't want to see them load up.
