  1. but don't you think murton is a better bet to provide that missing power vs. a LHP than Floyd, Pagan or Fontenot? none is likely too, but murton at least gives you the best chance. I love Murton, but can the guy produce with those limited ABs? Does he have the ability to platoon and pinch-hit a lot? I know he wasn't up with the big league club for much more than a month, but his performance when he was here showed that he was having a lot of difficulty in that role. Perhaps more importantly, we have too many OFs at the moment and Murton is the least versitile of them all. We need an OF who can hit for power, and if he can't do that, he might as well play more than just RF. I mean, I'd rather have DeRosa playing RF against LHP. We could use that opportunity to play Riot and Fontenot at SS and 2B (alternating with Ronny) and give Floyd some days off to rest. I just don't think Murton fits in right now.
  2. I mentioned this a few weeks ago: My roommate's cousin is a partial owner of the Orioles. We went had dinner with him and he was talking about how Tejada is available for an near-ready or MLB-ready prospect position player and an MLB-ready SP. We threw some names at him but he really wouldn't budge/speculate for us. Also, he confirmed that there was a Prior-for-Tejada deal on the table and it was ultimately vetoed because Baltimore ownership was concerned about Prior's durability. (go figure)
  3. They don't use aluminum in the minor leagues. I'm down with getting rid of aluminum, but more in a "help scouting" than "prevent injuries" kind of way. Oh I know -- t just brings up the many stories of players who have gotten injured over the years in baseball. I think a good way to help this specific situation would be to give coaches helmets.
  4. This is an absolutely tragedy. With this can I again stress... Can we please now ban aluminum bats from competition? How many people must get injured for the sake of batmakers' profits?
  5. I got really sad watching the highlights. That should've been Wrigley giving Sammy curtain calls, and I'm almost positive there would've been more than 2.
  6. I'm just going to have to disagree with you on that one. The catcher has a guy barreling for home. He's trying to block the plate, prepare for a possible collision, field a throw and apply a tag. He's wearing a glove that was not designed to field slow rolling ground balls. Jones was in shallow RF when he fielded that ball. That throw should have made it on the fly. Instead, it bounced and bounced to the point it was a slow roller by the time it got to Barrett in the fairly thick infield grass. Significant time was lost on a slow rolling throw in comparison to a throw made on the fly. Couple that in with the fact the runner was slow and even hesitated on his turn at third, and all the blame lies on Jacque's throw. It was pathetic even though it was online. A lollipop throw would have gotten to Barrett quicker than the worm burner he actually threw. Oh I know the throw completely sucked, but the fact that Barrett had the ball right in front of him and then lost it. He can block the plate and pick up the ball at the same time, perhaps with a bare hand/glove combo. I'm just sick and tired of watching both Jones and Barrett defensively suck it up this season and also be pretty awful at the plate (obviously much more Jones than Barrett). I really wish we could get a chance to see what Soto can do at the major league level.
  7. Yeah, and maybe the outfielders will eventually quit rolling the ball to home plate. The blame lies completely with Jacque Jones on that play. While his throw was on line, it was a worm burner. Jose Vidro was the runner, for crying out loud. If you can't gun down Jose Vidro (nevermind that Vidro almost came to a complete stop halfway between 3rd and home) on a shallow single, you have no business playing an outfield spot. Vidro doesn't run much better than Jim Thome. The throw was slow, but it was also right to Barrett. There is absolutely no reason he shouldn't have been able to cleanly make the tag. The blame does not lie "completely" with Jones. MB should've held on to the ball.
  8. Maybe the old one will help him CATCH THE BALL for a crucial play at the plate.
  9. Because of his defensive prowess, and probably because they thought he'd get his pre-injury stroke back. I think it was a terrible decision, but that's exactly why. I don't know why this is in Baseball Discussions... sounds more like a rant to me.
  10. My roommate's cousin is a 20% owner of the Orioles. We went to dinner with him and his family last week. (I didn't want to bring this up out of nowhere because I hate it when people say "I know a guy who knows a guy etc etc") He said that as of now, Tejada is available for an MLB-ready star pitching prospect and/or rookie AND a mid-level potential position player prospect. We mentioned Veal and he said it would have to be Veal and a position player, (he wasn't familiar with EPatt, who we brought up). It was very interesting. Cool guy. Of note, he told us that he vetoed a Prior for Bedard/Tejada deal because he was worried about potential injury problems, haha. Anyway, it really made my mouth water for Miggy...
  11. while I want someone on the Braves to pay the price for Hudson and Cox's actions last night, I am confident that any Brave batter that gets hit by a pitch tonight will result in an instantaneous ejection of the pitcher and Lou, with suspensions to follow, regardless of the intent of the pitcher or evidence of said intent. I feel this is one that will have to wait until next year, when hopefully Hudson will still be a Brave, and pay back can come against the actual offender. so if anyone is interested in my Belmont picks, the spread in game 3 of the NBA finals, how your daughters marriage will end up, contacting dead relatives, etc., my services are available for a fee. Close. Barrett could've stopped that pitch though. He didn't keep his knees together.
  12. A large reason we're 3-13 in 1-run games is because our bullpen has been complete crap. Please, enough with the "clutchness." We lead the league in BA with RISP if that means anything to you.
  13. I'm a big supporter of Cuban, but if he ends up buying, don't say you didn't know that he's had a tendency to overpay.
  14. 2002, easily. Hundley, Bellhorn, DELINO DESHIELDS.
  15. I was at today's game (0-5 for the season, but that's beside the point) and I've thought about this scuffle for a little bit before posting. Firstly, I'm really disappointed in both players -- this is clearly something that never happens. After I first heard about it, I really thought that at least one of the players needed to be traded. However, after thinking about this I've come to the conclusion that it's not the end of the world or the collapse of the team. These types of fights have happened in the past within a team -- they just usually aren't in public view. Skiles/Shaq, Jordan/Kerr are a couple of examples. Hopefully the two will apologize to each other and this can all be resolved shortly. I have a strange feeling that the team will right itself. It's only June 1st and Mil really isn't that impressive. I just hope they can get their act together soon.
  16. Why do the Yankees need a catcher and OF right now?
  17. Hibbert just decided to go back to school; Green's staying in the draft. I think Hawes could be a good fit for us, but I'd really like to try and trade up and take a shot with Yi. He and Deng would make for two long and athletic athletes (with jumpshots) to run the floor. You could put him at PF or C.
  18. I'm going to call "thug" on this one...
  19. This game is on Z. True, but I don't think Z would've given up 4 additional runs.
  20. Marshall isn't going to do better than Angel, and is more likely to do worse, while Angel isn't going to get consistent work out of the pen if Piniella continues to use the pen like he has. This isn't a hard concept. What is seemingly hard concept is that we need someone who doesn't suck in the bullpen. Our 5th starter need not be lights out. Guzman has the hard stuff to succeed in the bullpen. If we're not going to make a trade soon, why not give it a shot? Because a good starter is always more valuable than a good reliever. I agree with that. But when our pen is blowing a significant amount of games and we have another starter who could fill in, I think it might be worth trying out.
  21. Great win. I'm really proud of the the way the Cubs have come back these past 2 games.
