  1. not sure if Liriano would be getting these calls either, nobody's taking any pitches to find out
  2. good, this 1B ump is actually calling foot off the bag tonight
  3. if Orlando opts for McLemore, i'll start dreaming up scenarios where Pistons can trade ahead of Sacto and fill their PG vacanty with Burke and i can regain moderate interest in the NBA regular season again
  4. developmentally, he's pretty far behind the Adam Jones path though recall that Adam Jones came up as a part-time pitcher and moved off SS to the OF; even being that raw, he advanced up the ladder quicker than Baez and showed world's better plate discipline/pitch recognition the way i see it, the only real hope that Baez can be an elite hitter lies in the thought that the current player development team is correcting errors made by the previous regime, but you'd hope that all would have taken place last year; it's been noticeable throughout the season with other hitters but he hasn't seemed to be on board yet (until very recently, maybe)
  5. Brett Jackson has 8 K in 47 PA (17%) and a .295 AVG in 11 G since returning from injury
  6. at the very least, Theo should give him a bullpen flowchart
  7. Bailey got a ton of love coming up too, culminating in two straight top-10 prospect ratings and hasn't really had any significant injuries derail his career either for him the whole just hasn't been as good as the sum of the parts: really good FB velo, a good breaking ball and inconsistent tertiary offerings but hasn't gotten the swings & misses you'd expect...these are all things i'm reading about for Appel too
  8. i'm speaking specifically to the types of pitchers both have been in the bigs, not their status as draft prospects way back when
  9. if i could find anybody who had a 500 PA stretch with 6:1 strikeouts-to-walks in the early minors who actually went on to be an impactful hitter in the bigs, believe me i'd bring it up as an example i'll even try to come up with the most impatient, hackiest hitters who've carved out a niche in the bigs age 19-20 Corey Patterson: 70 BB, 200 K in 1015 PA at A+, AA Carlos Gomez: 59 BB, 185 K in 1025 PA at A, AA Delmon Young: 44 BB, 164 K in 974 PA at AA, AAA Adam Jones: 79 BB, 190 K in 988 PA at A+, AA, AAA Ian Desmond: 68 BB, 227 K in 1108 PA at A, A+, AA Jeff Francoeur: 52 BB, 152 K in 1010 PA at A, A+, AA Javy Baez (499 PA) is half-way to 42 BB, 232 K at A, A+ that's...alarming
  10. I actually found that ridiculously comforting. i can't for the life of me see why "Secondly, there's been some concern about his low walk rate, but if we take a closer look, he's actually improved that rate since his performance in Peoria -- the performance, by the way, that created all the buzz and essentially launched him into top prospect status with the Cubs. His walk rate has gone from 3.8% to 4.6% since his promotion to Daytona." yippee! no, he's really just given more evidence that patience is a huge problem for him "His strikeouts have also gone up, from 20.4% to 25.8% but there's no inherent flaw in Baez's swing that makes you believe strikeouts are a fundamental problem for him." oh, well in that case at A+: .248/.290/.432, 4.9% BB, 24.7% K in 507 PA .258/.294/.381, 4.1% BB, 14.2% K in 316 PA .238/.280/.459, 4.5% BB, 25.8% K in 264 PA that's Harvey, Vitters & Baez, respectively
  11. i keep reading these write-ups for the two and am reminded of Josh Johnson for Gray and Homer Bailey for Appel and with the hypothetical that we'd be waiting 2-3 years for Gray and maybe 1 for Appel i still feel more inclined to prefer Gray but Raisin or whoever can tell me if that's really off-base or if those comparisons aren't really accurate
  12. per dobbs, line combs in practice: Brandon Saad – Jonathan Toews – Marian Hossa Patrick Sharp – Dave Bolland – Patrick Kane Bryan Bickell – Andrew Shaw – Viktor Stalberg Daniel Carcillo – Marcus Kruger – Michael Frolik
  13. It'd be fascinating and frustrating to construct a team there. I'd have to agree that this would seem like the most sensible approach. Related to Gray in Colorado, does anyone know if Coors has a measurable effect on velocity? i've linked to it before, but this is still the best study i've seen on the effects of Coors' thin air: http://wooden-feather.com/?p=33
  14. i had to bolt & couldn't catch the last 2 innings of today's game, but i feel comfortable blaming Castillo for the loss he had already seen three sliders a foot off the plate, one of which he swung at with a 2-1 count (rage) and he sees a 3rd straight slider in the same stupid location with a full count that he had in his mind the whole way he'd swing at regardless i wonder if the CBA expressly outlaws some kind of Pavlovian* shock therapy synced up with pitch f/x that goes off every time some of these guys flail haplessly at pitches out of the zone during 2-0, 3-1 counts; it just kills me *well, B.F. Skinner was actually the operant conditioning guy whereas Pavlov employed positive reinforcement but that might not be well-known enough for the reference to work
  15. Wood putting one on Waveland ranks pretty high up there for '13 Cubs moments so far
  16. Jeremy Hellickson gave up 8 runs and still registered a win
  17. i don't think there's many other prospects who've seen their stock drop quite as much as Baez's has this season
  18. http://www.snarkysweetgossip.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/sobbing.gif
  19. and now looms Bobby Parnell, with a 1.04/0.75 seasonal line balls
