  1. nicely spotted. He was also another pitcher (RP instead of SP, which accounts for some of the innings) ML ready out of college. He'd also logged 57.0 innings at U of Texas the same year he was in the minors, so he didn't need the work.
  2. Mark Prior was ML ready out of college. Darn near every scout in the country thought that. Kerry Wood pitched 151 innings above A ball before being called up to Chicago. Do you really think Marshall has more talent than Wood (at that point in his career)? You have to be kidding me. You got me!!! Do you really think that no pitcher should ever be promoted to the majors until they have at least 55 innings above A ball? For certain pitchers the minors are a formality. Prior could have pitched in Chicago right after leaving USC. Woody probably should have spent more time in the minors working on mechanics (hindsight is 20/20). Marshall doesn't come anywhere near Wood or Prior talent wise (or Willis). His current abilities don't merit a callup to the big league level either. He had a couple good outings in ST. Whoopdee do. I'll hope for the best and love it if he succeeds in Chicago, but we have to be realistic. If Prior and Wood weren't DL magnets, Marshall wouldn't have sniffed the bigs until we were out of it, if at all.
  3. I agree with your point about Marshall's lack of experience, I just found it funny that you didn't think of Dontrelle in your original post. I don't really consider Willis to be a "Cubs minor leaguer" since he pitched all of 121 innings with us before being traded. Willis also had a sub 1.50 ERA in his short stint in AA. As opposed to his 66 IP in the Marlins system? What? 2000 AZL: 28.0 IP 2001 Boise: 93.0 IP trade from Cubs to Marlins (March 27, 2002) 2002 Kane County (A): 127.0 2002 Jupiter (A+): 30.0 2003 Carolina (AA): 36.0 Innings in the Marlins minor league system = 193.0

  6. I can think of another Cubs minor league left handed starter that had less than 50 IP above A Ball.... And Hill got lit up in the bigs. http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2005/writers/james_quintong/07/13/secondhalf.duds/t1_willis_allstar_all.jpg Willis? LMAO. That only undermines the argument that the Cubs org. knows what pitchers to call up to the big league team with limited minor league innings (much less trade away).

  8. We're not going to lose b/c of our "improved" offense or the bullpen. The game won't even get to that point. We'll have spotty run scoring abilities (lack of walks throughout the lineup) and a crappy rotation. Marshall will get lit up some games and pitch great in others. That's the nature of rookie pitchers (Zach Duke is a freak). Rusch is...Rusch. Maddux isn't in his prime. Z is a beast. That's great, but we'd better hope the offense clicks on Marshall and Rusch's good days.
  9. I agree with you on Cedeno, there is no way his play this spring justifies him starting. But, the Cubs have shown some ability to judge pitchers. With Marshall it may just be the case of him putting it all together at the right time. The simple reality is that he outperformed everyone else that was auditioning for the job and some of the guys in the rotation. I haven't seen anything about Marshall that is not to like. Sure he doesn't throw 95 mph on a regular basis, but he seems to have good control and some pretty filthy stuff. It has been awhile since the Cubs have had a good lefty in the rotation. I don't think one good spring should get you a ML job. It should be able to tip the scales in your favor, but guys like Marshall shouldn't vault from a few innings in AA to the 4 spot in the rotation. If we're in the "earn it" business like Hendry says we are, Hill would be in the rotation, not Marshall, even with his horrible spring. No one else has logged the innings (among Hill, Guzman, and Marshall). Marshall has 54 innings above A ball. Fifty freaking four. The only pitcher I know of to pitch fewer than 54 innings above A ball before a decent stint in the majors is Mark Prior. And Prior was ML ready out of college.
  10. If we were dealing with the braves pulling this, I'd be happy. We don't exactly have the greatest track record with our prospects, particularly position players. This looks like desperation to me brought on by injuries and budget concerns. Could we afford a 5M LF instead of Murton and Furcal at 10M/season? Nope. I think Murton has earned his spot. Cedeno hasn't. Marshall hasn't. Don't get me wrong, I like Marshall better than Rusch and Cedeno better than Neifi, but the fact we're even in this position is laughable.
  11. Does the number he's at matter after a few weeks? Yup. It means a few more innings as Prior, Wood, and Miller show up (hopefully). I doubt they return at the same time.
  12. The prospect in question is better than Pie, but the rumor is bogus.
  13. While I love Marshall, having him as the #4 starter might just be way too freaking aggressive. 54 IP above A ball? He's not Mark Prior.
  14. No, that's knowledge of the game and what it takes to win. Yup. I'm so insanely jealous of that organization.
  15. The thing that shocked me was Atlanta at #7 after graduating like 15-20 guys to the majors (went from 5 to 7). That's just scary depth.
  16. 1. Arizona Diamondbacks 2. Los Angeles Dodgers 3. Florida Marlins 4. Los Angeles Angels 5. Milwaukee Brewers 6. Minnesota Twins 7. Atlanta Braves 8. Boston Red Sox 9. Cleveland Indians 10. 17. Dayton Moore as GM and Orel Hershiser as manager. Moore is a dream (love to have him here). Isn't he Schuerholz's heir apparent? Frank Wren is just as much of a possibility as Moore replacing Schuerholz. All depends on Terry McGuirk's decision. Moore did accept Boston's GM job before deciding against it a short time after. If Boston had been a situation more suited for Moore at the time, I think he would've accepted the position. Moore is a better with the Cubs than Boston. How so? Just b/c we're quite a bit more into talent evaluation than stats?
  18. Chemistry pretty much takes care of itself as long as you set rules as an organization, be it no jewelry on the field or the clean cut look. Don't make exceptions and make it clear to players what you expect from them. Clear communication. The Braves had loads of egomaniacs over the years and very few of them bucked the system. Even Sheffield didn't dink around while a Brave. Deion did, but he was quickly shown the door. If people are respectful and team oriented (not individuals on the field), chemistry should take care of itself with a decent managerial staff.

  20. Exactly. I'll never get the "Hendry fleeced the Pirates talk" in regards to ARam. They didn't have a choice and few teams could take on that contract short notice and at that position. The Cubs finally got lucky. I feel kind of bad for Pirates fans. Some truly outstanding talent has come up through their system. If they'd of had the payroll to lock up young talent to long term extensions (see the Cleveland Indians recent history), they'd be a threat to win the division.
  21. My guess is b/c of Cedeno's struggles & with Dusty's love for Neifi I see a platoon coming to start the season. Platooning Cedeno with Neifi! is not a problem if it allows Cedeno to regain his confidence. Except for the little problem that Neifi sucks and shouldn't be in the lineup, anywhere. He's a backup, and a decent one at that. I don't want to ever see him starting every day for the Chicago Cubs ever again, but he is a solid bench option.
  22. Ok, if the Trib sells the Cubs, who do you want as GM and Manager? (availability is a concern)
  23. should be 10 games, not days.
  24. Yup, but it's bs anyway, so no worries, CardsFan. :)
