  1. Jones in RF? Sweet. The division is ours. Don't do it, Jim. [-X
  2. Believe what you want. You want him, I don't. I think he's a timebomb. Why not a stronger push for JD Drew? Don't they play about as often? Aren't Drew's numbers far superior? Doesn't Drew play RF? For what it's worth, I have no respect for Lugo either. how much does drew make? bradley?
  3. i thought he was hispanic. he's not Haitian.
  4. floyd isn't available either. mench is too expensive.
  5. I love Marte, but I read that Marte had a UCL tear in his elbow and TJS was probably likely in the future (Boston Herald). he's real young, so missing a year isn't the end of the world, but he isn't the #1 prospect in baseball any more.
  6. Soriano is very selfish. He's not even good at 2B. Way to be a team player.
  7. Because he isn't really that great of an offensive player. We got slightly less production from Walker last year that we would probably get from Tejada this year. Just because he plays a positon were offense is scarce doesn't mean we should overpay for him, especially if it is possible to upgrade more cheaply at another position. What were his numbers last year? No way is he comparable to Walker. Tejada last year: 304/.349/.515/.864 Walker last year: .305/.355/.474/.829 Try RBI's and HR's. Selective use of numbers is meaningless. NO ONE in baseball would try to equate Todd Walker being the equal to Tejada. seriously...post of the day. you say, 'try rbi's and hr's.' then the VERY NEXT SENTENCE you say selective use of numbers is meaningless. was it hard to type that w/ a straight face? Don't you feel all numbers are important? how can you compare RBI totals as they bat in different spots in the lineup? HR? fine.
  8. I was firmly in the "Sign Bradley" camp before we acquired a CF (albeit a CF that is inferior to Bradley). Bradley would have been a significant asset as a CF. But (1) I think it's naive to say that his purported attitude problems are not a risk; (2) Bradley isn't be anything more than a league average RF, at best; and (3) in light of 1 and 2, he's not really worth the risk. I agree. I don't think anyone said (1) though, just that his production in CF would be worth the risk. I really wanted Bradley instead of Pierre. :(
  9. why does he want out? the O's are spending money. mazzone going to Baltimore doesn't imply that things are going in the wrong direction. they just got hernandez. what is this clown whining about?
  10. ditto i wonder what the O's would ask for him and if we have what it takes (and are willing to give up).
  11. bradley's attractiveness was his production in CF. Pierre makes Bradley less attractive in RF, especially with his injury concerns. The attitude problems don't bother me (or the Cubs seemingly).
  12. I'd rather give the prospects a few starts and trade Rusch at the deadline (if we're tanking again). However, I'd rather go with Elarton than with Millwood or some other overpaid FA this season. If we could get a front of the rotation guy via trade, that would be wonderful, but it's probably unlikely. Woody puts us in a bind this year, but we're probably looking to get a front of the line starter next year with him off the books (and declining his option). let's hope our trade chips don't go south on us in 2006.
  13. Last 5 seasons ERA: 4.81 7.06 6.27 5.90 4.61 Why would you offer him 2 years? Why would you offer him $3.5m? Why would you want him at all? Give him a minor league invite if you insist. He's been awful since his breakthrough with Houston in the 90's. His K/9 fell from over 8 to under 6, consistently under 6. He gives up a ton of longballs and a big OPS against. If I'm going to bitch about Rusch's contract (and I am) then I'd have to bitch about this guy, who is just as bad, if not worse. Well, I called it. why don't you state your rationale for acquiring him and that hypothetical contract. i seriously don't see why you want him, but maybe you could shed some light on the guy.
  14. I was going to post a message, but you've captured my feelings. Zito will be much better, and if we can get him from the Athletics now, we'll have no problem affording him next year (when Maddux's contract rolls off). The superior pitching provided by Zito will offset what I believe will be only average production from RF (i.e., the candidates discussed here...Bradley, Wilkerson, Huff, Mench are OK, but not serious impact bats). the problem with Zito is negotiating some sort of extension before trading for him. he's going to command a decent haul in prospects, which is a very high price to pay for a one year rental. Beane won't give anyone permission to talk to Zito about an extension (so far). maybe it's just a negotiating tactic.
  15. i think the bidding is currently at 44M/4. Who offered that? That's too much. Seattle, although the team officially denies it. Millwood is looking for around 11M+/5 years. Ridiculous. I think a more realistic number is 40M/4, but this market has seen a number of stupid signings (Furcal, lol). it's still too much for Millwood, who will be 31 next season.
  16. none of the available FA pitchers are worth the money they're going to get. just say no. the only decent contract was Burnett. yes, burnett. i'd rather take a chance on spending 11M per season on a front of the rotation guy than an innings eater like Millwood, who usually puts up a 4+ ERA (especially since we're talking 4-5 year contracts in both cases).
  17. I really doubt Beckett is going to make 20+ starts next year. I do like dealing Renteria + 11M for Marte. Marte is going to be a freaking monster at Fenway.
  18. It's not about the contract being bad in the first place. hey, i didn't want furcal at the rumored prices either. however, he was priority # 1 for the cubs and all it would have taken to get him was another 500k-1M per season to do it. that's just flat out cheap. come out the pocket, already. if furcal couldn't suck another million per season out of the cubs, what do you think is going to happen to the lesser priorities? oh, and Furcal would have been willing to take a pay cut over the other offers (according to Offman). we were at 9.5M/year, atlanta at 9M/year (one lest guaranteed year), and atlanta was at 13M/year. we already broke our rule of giving a 5+ year guaranteed contract, but can't scrape together another million per season? wow. personally, i'm happy this didn't work out, but the reason it didn't work out (supposedly) doesn't put a smile on my face.
  19. Right. But have you gotten a good look at the Cards bullpen lately? Hey, you guys lost a lot of weight recently (Burger King).
  20. What would Tampa want for both Lugo and Huff, though? That could cost a bundle. All the good prospects will be in Florida, somewhere. Cedeno and Hill. Regardless of what Hendry says, I'm sure they are both available. Hill should be available, but he won't be. Hendry doesn't want to let another Willis go (to a lesser extent Sisco as well).
  21. How much cash is Boston picking up in this? Marte? I thought they were really high on this kid. :? Chipper Freaking Jones. Oh well, at least Marte won't be our problem from now on...to the AL he goes. I'm trying to find the article, but I read somewhere last week that he went from being BA's #1 overall prospect to being #4 in the Braves system within a few months. He didn't do so good in 2005 (57 AB) with the big league club, but in AAA, he posted .275/.372/.506/.878.
