    You're willing to give up a 24 year old ace for a 30 year old top tier SS? 24 year old upper tier SP are not available every season. i'd love to have great offensive production at SS, but it's easier to pick it up in the OF. it's a luxury, not something to sell out for.

    Vance, I disagree. I don't believe Hendry will include him. We can discuss whether that's a mistake, but I don't think Pie will be part of any Cubs offer. I don't think he'd be part of the offer Jim makes, but I do think that Baltimore is going to keep countering with him. I think a lot depends on how special a player Hendry believes Tejada can be for the Cubs. I also think that whether Pie is in the deal will greatly depend on a.) does Hendry think he can retain Pierre after 2006. b.) what other players Baltimore is insisting on. I think Pie's value is severely diminished with the acquisition of Pierre and the intention to sign him to an extension. Pie in RF isn't anything great. Pie reaching his potential in CF would have been awesome, but he isn't irreplaceable in RF/LF.

    Vance, I disagree. I don't believe Hendry will include him. We can discuss whether that's a mistake, but I don't think Pie will be part of any Cubs offer. Pie isn't even a blue chipper. We're supposed to get Tejada with a bunch of second tier prospects. sorry, but we don't have any can't miss guys (well, maybe Pawelek, but it's too early to tell).

    So that's two players now that Tejada has had so many personal problems with, that they affected (supposedly) his on the field ability. Clubhouse problem? the other was Sosa? Yeah. There very well might be others, both reported and unreported, but this it two now in the recent past... I'm not sure how I feel about that. I'm not in love with Tejada, but he is a clubhouse leader. Those guys tend to be involved in any conflicts. Sosa was a problem child, so I find it hard to blame Miggy based on that reported conflict (details are sketchy). What on earth happened with Hernandez? One thing is for sure, this team lacks a leader.

    I agree wholeheartedly, I just don't want to part with both of our top prospects (Pie and Hill). The way I see it, Pie is more easily replaceable as we can extend Pierre's contract or find someone else, whereas good pitchers are very hard to come by. The mets won't throw in Milledge I don't think. They seem to be very protective of him... I think the Mets already offered Milledge to get Manny, so they're willing to part with him. The good thing is that if we really wanted to get Tejada, we probably could if we're just talking prospects (after the recent trades with Florida/NYM). If the Mets are willing to open up a hole in their starting lineup by trading Wright or Reyes, we're out of it.

    How do you evaluate that? Philly wants a front of the rotation starter, which they probably won't get. Who knows what Baltimore wants? They could certainly net a nice haul in prospects if they decided to go that route. I think Tejada is more value given age and position considerations. There is a large jump between guys like Tejada and second tier players like Furcal. There aren't many elite SS and none who are available besides Tejada (supposedly).

    It'll be dictated by teams like the Cubs and Boston who have a serious demand for a SS and the caliber of Tejada is a rarity, given how much teams are willing to spend on 2nd tier SS over the past seasons. If a team like Mets become involved, then the asking price becomes even higher. I think the AL teams are already priced out of it. Baltimore has enough trouble making the playoffs without strengthening another team they have to compete with, either for the division or a WC. Are the Mets going to move Reyes to 2B, b/c Tejada isn't moving from SS. Who do they have left in their farm system? Milledge? If they start throwing his name out there, the price will definitely go up, but I'm pretty sure the Tejada bidding is going to start with Pie anyway (and a whole lot more). Once we reach the decision to part with top prospects, it's just a matter of haggling for the lesser guys.

    Who does Baltimore have at SS without Tejada? Cedeno would almost certainly need to be included. Walker may be a possibility at 1B, but he'd be at the low end of production there, and they have an All-Star 2B, so that's out of the question. they don't have anyone ML ready (or several years away). C. Gomez is the next guy on the depth chart, lol.

    I'm really beginning to seriously doubt the effectiveness of the Cubs minor leauge development and coaching staffs. ...but we developed Mark Prior. :roll: Zambrano and Wood don't count? Is wood really a testament to our minor league system? he had all the talent in the world coming in and can't stay healthy b/c of mechanics, which probably should have been altered when he was younger. great job on Z. that's one solid pitcher in how many years?

    I'm not sure how much trade value Pawelek has this point seeing as he's fresh off the draft and hasn't done much professionally yet. Speaking of which, if I'm not mistaken (though I very well could be... I'm not an expert on draft rules) I think that a team can't trade a player for something like a year after he is drafted and signed. If that's indeed the case then Pawelek can't be used as a bargaining chip unil mid-season at the earliest. I'd rather let go of Hill or Pie than Pawelek.

    It's not his alleged altercations that bother me, it's that he appears to be soooo unstable. Buyer beware. He's an intelligent loner with a chip on his shoulder. You have to admire that spirit, even if it isn't always channeled in the right direction.

    care to elaborate? Walker in my book, Freel reminds me of Bo Hart. Heck, I will take Jerry Jr. instead of Freel Career Numbers Freel: .276/.369/.377/.746 Hairston: .261/.334/.371/.705 the only time Hairston put up better numbers than Freel was in 2004 when he posted .303/.378/.397/.775 and that year he had a BABIP way above career norms (basically, he got lucky). Hairston plays 2B and a passable CF in a pinch (ie Patterson tanking, lol). Freel provides more flexibility (he's actually good at his positions unlike the recently departed Macias). i'd take walker over freel, but Hendry may not let us have Walker. :(

    I'm sensing sarcasm, but in case I'm wrong... like it has been said here before, what do you do for RF between April 1-30, while they cannot negotiate with JB? :wink: no, i was being serious. i think we should pursue a bat in RF, but if we can't get one, as a worst case scenario I want Burnitz over Jones. we're a long way from having to just go with a purely defensive option. i'm pretty sure the likes of bradley and kearns are above jones on hendy's wish list or we'd be hearing a lot more about jones. bleep. i forgot about the non-negotiation window. burnitz will be gone by then. we'd better get kearns if all else fails. he won't be too expensive.

    I prefer a little from column A and a little from column B. He's not saying that they currently have interest in Jones, but just having him as a possibility makes my head hurt. Since Hendry didn't land Furcal, he isn't ruling out any more free agent signings. I read the bolded part above as 'gawd knows were not done yet, but we think further acquisitions will come via trade' I agree. And Jon, I agree that even Hendry saying that he's EVER considered J. Jones a possibility is scary. I said at the beginning of this offseason that my nightmare scenario was Jones in RF, and it still is. I'm just hoping Hendry isn't interested at this point. I think he has to know (please, God) that he needs a bat out there, not a glove. if he needs a glove, i hope he gets Burnitz. he won't cost as much and will give us similar garbage at the plate.
