Tanking is a much more prevalent and obvious thing now. Jed wants to lose games. Heyward makes that more likely. He’s fine with it. This doesn't make any sense. It's not the NBA. Playing Velazquez over Heyward isn't going to improve the Cubs record, and if by some miracle Velazquez put up 3 WAR or something then the value of that would massively outweigh the difference between the 6th and 7th pick.
I remember when I thought this was a Dusty thing. Giving tons of PAs on a non-contender to washed-up vets who aren't contributing and who are past the point of salvaging any trade value. I know Jed understands the sunk cost fallacy. I know he values ABs for the young guys. I've never heard any good argument for this horsefeathers.
He had a good game (2B, HR) since you posted this, but I'm really excited that he went from 1 HR in 235 AB to 4 HR in 130 AB, while increasing his BB % from 2.5% to 13.5%. I feel like that's great progress and I already liked him more than Howard.
Just browsing minor league leaders on Fangraphs, looking at BB/K and BB% for ARL guys and came across this freak: Emmanuel Rodriguez (MIN) 19 yo OF in A ball. Came into the season as the 25th ranked prospect in the Twins org. 199 PAs. 28.6% BB (!!!) 26.1% K .272/.492/.551 That walk rate is unbelievable. And he's 19. The twins are in 1st and could use a catcher....
It's funny, these situations where infield defense is critical are the ones I most miss the old team. Having Rizzo and Baez on the infield, I always felt pretty good about them. And, yep.
Thought I'd have to wait until July or September to see Velazquez. I've been a big fan for a while and this is easily the most exciting news of the season so far. Hope Kilian isn't far behind.
