  1. I mean, I understand that we can trade our good hitters for prospects and then use those prospects to bolster the roster, either via trade or by calling them up. I would simply argue that, as currently constructed, and considering how few good offensive catchers there are currently in MLB, that signing Willson Contreras to a reasonable contract, if possible, would be a smart move. If the dude demands 6 years, by all means, good luck and godspeed. If 3-4 years @ ~20/yr is possible, bring him back. It will go a long way toward lengthening that lineup. If my choices are: Turner @ 35/yr + Hoerner + Hedges or Hoerner + Madrigal + Contreras @ 20/yr, I'll take this one and use the $$$ toward the rotation or Bell or something <---- I'm also a proponent of signing Happ to a reasonable extension if possible. He's a switch hitter who just turned 28 and has been the 6th most valuable OF in the NL this season. You want to contend, he should stay on the team. You can still bolster the roster in the same way as before. Bring prospects up. Trade prospects. Between Davis/PCA/Canario/Alcantara/Pinango, etc. we can find another OF or two and upgrade the hell out of the rotation via trade.
  2. So subtract Contreras and Happ, add one of the FA SS and the lineup looks pretty rough to me. Would need a hell of a pitching staff to contend. Turner SS Hoerner 2B Reyes DH Morel CF Suzuki RF Mervis 1B Velazquez LF Wisdom 3B Gomes C
  3. Spending on the lineup and trading to strengthen the rotation could work, too. Sign Willson, one of the SS and a pen arm Go big after two younger, TOR types, and be willing to pay a premium for them (as opposed to the reclamation route) Spitballing: Alcantara, Wicks, Marquez and Amaya for Zac Gallen Thompson, Triantos, Preciado, Herz for Jesus Luzardo Gallen Luzardo Stroman Steele Hendricks 1. Turner, SS 2. Nico, 2B 3. Willson, C 4. Happ, LF 5. Reyes, DH 6. Suzuki, RF 7. Mervis, 1B 8. Morel, CF 9. Wisdom, 3B
  4. Needs a couple of quick innings
  5. Admittedly, I didn't watch, but giving up five doubles in three innings seemed like more than bad luck.
  6. Are you implying something about his velo or something or just bad results? He was apparently throwing a ton of breaking pitches. He did touch 98 on the fastball so no issue there.
  7. Unless Kilian was just working on an eephus pitch or something, today was very bad.
  8. Just call Mervis up and play him everyday.
  9. Can they give Higgins more playing time? I get that he has no pedigree, but all he's done is rake.
  10. Well things ended up almost exactly the way I wanted them to, but I'm in agreement that without an extension, keeping Willson is a mistake. The qo pick can't possibly be better than anything the Cubs were offered. If you're Jed, now you are almost certainly better off trying to make a push next year with the expanded playoffs. The lineup is almost set and they should be able to add a real starter in the offseason. Some of the top guys on the farm will likely be pushing hard + they'll have plenty of bullets to make additions at the deadline.
  11. Pretty shocked they dealt Effross. Seemed like a long term answer toward the back of the bullpen. They must be confident Wesneski is ready for a rotation spot. 2023: Stroman/Hendricks/Steele/Thompson/Wesneski ? Not very sexy. Not sure where Kilian slots in there, either.
  12. This is an abomination. We're taking on salary, trading a younger, better pitcher for an older, bad one and then exchanging Happ and Robertson for Amaya with less power? Moreno is a top 10 prospect (top 5?) in all of Baseball - Amaya isn't even in the Cubs top 15 maybe even 20 prospects anymore so if that's your best comparison of the two.. field hockey season starts soon. Cubs are taking on salary - because they can -with a LH who throws 95 and may be fixable...plus 2 prospects. The question posed was how to get Moreno - Madrigal and Daniel Norris aren't going to get it done this isn't a ride at Disneyland. IF you want Moreno its going to hurt. I get that he's a top 5 prospect, I'm just completely unsold on him.
  13. This is an abomination. We're taking on salary, trading a younger, better pitcher for an older, bad one and then exchanging Happ and Robertson for Amaya with less power?
  14. 40+ relief prospect absolutely CANNOT be the headliner for a 27-yr-old all star under control until '24.
  15. 3 pitchers. Chandler Champlain, Beck Way and T.J. Sikkema All in A or A+, all performing to varying degrees. Recent college draftees, 40FV guys entering the season.
  16. Yeah. I never thought they'd keep them all, but I certainly didn't anticipate salting the earth, either. Some of those, as much as they hurt, made sense. This lineup would have been pretty great with Rizzo and Kyle in it. Morel 2B Nico SS Happ LF Rizzo 1B Willson C Schwarber DH Suzuki RF Wisdom 3B Ortega CF
  17. O'Hoppe would be great, but agree that there isn't really a fit unless we added one of our surplus OF prospects when dealing them a reliever.
  18. I like Campusano, but I wouldn't bet much on him putting up more career value than Amaya. They aren't that far apart offensively to offset the defense. Having them both wouldn't be the worst thing, but I'd prefer to focus on acquiring pitching.
  19. It all goes in to the mix together. If our roster was a giant void, pat Willson on the back and get what you can. If you think he'll come back on a reasonable deal in the offseason, do the same, but there are only a few catchers in the game that aren't a liability on one side of the ball. We have arguably the very best one and, critically, this team has misrepresented how far away it is from contention. Here's some NL position player rankings in fWAR (min. 250 PAs) 11. Nico 15. Willson 23. Happ 38. Morel 55. Wisdom With Suzuki, that's six positions filled more than adequately. The back 3/5 of the rotation should be a strength next season, as well.
  20. If I thought the team was 2011 bad, I'd say let the old guard go. But..... Morel Nico Suzuki Contreras Happ Wisdom Those six could be in the starting lineup of a WS team. Two are over 30. Yes, it needs supplementing. Yes, the rotation needs an ace. Maybe I'm wrong, but if this big market team signed Josh Bell and Joe Musgrove, they would be the favorites in the central. I don't accept that we should pass on those opportunities in favor of the enticing potential of waves and waves. We have a strong farm already. Trade the relievers and make it #1. Then start adding.
  21. You understand the chances of Morel even getting to Wrigley would decrease significantly if Javy was still a Cub right? Sorry, I wasn't very clear. Javy is the most exciting player I've ever seen, he is our household's favorite player, he was integral to winning the WS and I wanted them to extend him. I like Morel. He's cool. Now it's Willson, who I also have strong feelings about. Yes, I might like watching Campusano or whoever in a couple of years but I'd rather stop logjamming guys at South Bend/Myrtle Beach and just go ahead and make another push with the last great player of the most legendary cubs team of all time.
  22. I said this when Javy was traded but my days as a win at all costs, to-hell-with-sentimentality fan are over. It's still ~90%, but they won it all, I was there, and it was more than perfect. I now assign greater value to watching my favorite players play for my favorite team. Even this six game streak on a losing team has been fun because Contreras and Happ are hitting, I get to watch Morel continue to turn into a thing, Keegan, etc. Waves and waves is great in theory, but to keep turning beloved cubs into 45FV dudes in an attempt to make that happen isn't doing it for me anymore.
  23. NL rookies wRC+ (min 75 PAs) 1. P.J. Higgins 2. Christopher Morel 3. Nelson Velazquez 4. Brendan Donovan 5. Seiya Suzuki I am playing games with # of PAs but it's something fun in a dark season
