He can't set up a team to succeed. He picks the wrong players and then puts them in impossible situations. It isn't Mix's fault he's getting overrun in midfield, or Matt Besler's that he looks like he needs a 4 month nap. Clint isn't there to bail out these 2012-esque lineups with a random moment of magic against the run of play. Jurgen is a bad tactical coach. He's a bad talent evaluate and an idiot in front of a microphone.

England are 100% so far, 3-1 over Slovenia today at Wembley. I like the composition of this particular England team; the Golden Generation guys are all gone, and it's a good mix of experience with some interesting younger players. Also, in the spirit of conversation, I have an observation: Jozy Altidore is our Wayne Rooney. Not in terms of ability or talent, but in terms of how he's viewed by the fanbase. Everyone hates Rooney for not being the best player on the planet, yet he's going to end up being the leading England and United goalscorer, and he's still only 29, meaning he's got one more Euro and World Cup in him. England fans hate Rooney for what he isn't as opposed to appreciating him for what he is, which is a very good, consistent player. Altidore has 25 goals in 75 caps. He's 25 years old. He's got an outside shot at passing Donovan for all-time leading scorer in a US shirt if he keeps up this strike rate. And yet Jozy is viewed as a disappointment because he didn't turn into Didier Drogba. For club, he's made bad decisions chasing money, but for the US, he's been, well, Rooney-esque in terms of production. I don't think either guy gets the credit they deserve from their NT fanbases.

Passive offside is one of the dumbest rules in sports. I'm not sure of the wording of the rule, but I'm not sure how that even can be passive. The idea is that it's not offside if he's not involved in the play, basically that if you remove him entirely, the play happens exactly the same, right? Guzan would've broken that up like that if that guy weren't standing a yard from the ball for a solid 2 seconds. Pretty sure we had a goal disallowed in 2006 for something fairly comparable...

Gee it sure is good that Lee Nguyen doesn't play in a second-rate league like ML-what's this now? JK can GTFO with his MLS bashing; Nguyen showed more in his first 2 minutes on the field than Mix did in 77.

Morris and Ibarra didn't make the 18 which reinforces my belief he called them up only to legitimize his previous selection. I agree completely; Ibarra in particular makes zero sense.

That makes too much sense to be real, so I'm assuming Altidore and Bedoya are the centerback pairing and Guzan is playing underneath the striker.

FIFA made a serious mistake whitewashing their report to the point where it only ripped England and Australia and cleared Qatar and Russia. What's worse is that they did it in the manner of accusing the FA of serious crimes, which is going to result in government inquiries. Those tend to have subpoena power. And real consequences. Ditto the FBI investigation, which is now being kicked into a higher gear. Every reporter for every one of their gutter papers is going to be trying to get the full Garcia Report now. Its going to come out and it's going to be glorious.

It really is stunning how an offense that managed to gain yards in chunks in 2013 can't move the ball worth a [expletive] 12 months later with the same guys. -

Those were two of the dumbest yellows a player can pick up. Remember when Thiago Silva did that same inexplicable crap against Columbia in the QF and got himself suspended? This was somehow worse, since Smalling basically tried to guard Hart like he was playing basketball.

FC Dallas won the play-in game against Vancouver courtesy of one of the worst PKs I've ever seen given in my entire life, literally. A ball at the corner of the 18 off a throw bounced up and hit the upper arm of a Whitecap's defender, whose arms were flush against his body in the most natural position you could put the in. That's ball-to-arm with the arm in a natural spot. That's a non-call in a 1-1 playoff tie in the 81st minute. Mark Geiger had a good World Cup, but he has been abysmal in MLS since then. An absolute joke. He was crap last weekend in the Seattle/LA game, and that was a garbage call.

I thought so but he would've been hosed. He was somehow only just getting into third when the ball got to the cutoff man. He probably would have been thrown out, yeah, but given that they hadn't been able to do anything against Bumgarner all series, why not make them execute the throw home? The odds of Gordon scoring couldn't have been much worse than facing Bumgarner. ETA: Between the relay throw home and the blocking the plate rule, I think the odds were better sending him.
