    Thanks for taking the time to find that article. That said, I don't see it as backing up your contentions in this thread. well, to be honest I'm trying to wade through about 137 threads to find Tim's post. It's not as easy as I thought it would be! :D

    If I get the chance I'll try and find tim's chart on this. Basically he pulled all the game logs and found that Kyle would get used 6 out of 7 days in a row twice during June or July and would suck for a month after that.

    Maybe someday he'll be as good as.....Farnsworth. Maybe. Let's see how Farnsworth ends up the season. I think we all know he isn't much of a second-half player. That said, I'm still not sure he would be putting up these numbers in Chicago...the place just didn't seem to be a good fit for him. He wasn't much of a second-half player in Chicago because Dusty used Farnsworth so much. I don't think you can say that with any level of certainty, especially considering that he pitched more innings in his best seasons (82 in 2001 and 78 in 2003) than he did in 2000, 2002 or 2004, when he struggled quite a bit. It wasn't the amount of innings, but the way they were piled on each other in a short span of time.

As Tim rightly pointed out, Farnsworth was the best reliever on the team the past 2 years, until Dusty ran him ragged.

    The thing is, though, that sreak has to come right now for it to mean anything. We probably have to go 10-2 over our next 12 for us to be back in the race so Hendry can justify making an impact move.

    17-117 since June 6th and it's all bad luck. Those of us who hoped to see Cedeno get more time will have to wait. http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-kiley09.html I haven't seen Niefi hit a line drive since mid-June. I have seen him hit lazy fly balls, weak ground outs and pop outs, though. I haven't seen him take a walk, though.

    I'm having a brainstorm, and if Murton continues to show the same approach at the plate, wouldn't he be an ideal 2 hole hitter? He doesn't project to have huge power, but he had a good average and great control of the strike zone. He went to RF last night when that's what the pitchers gave him, and he has good basepath speed. Do you think Baker would bat him 2nd?

    What I don't get is why Hendry hired a manager with the opposite beliefs about player development that he does. If Hendry knows the importance of young players, as he must having directed the farm system, then why would he entrust this system to Baker? Why would he allow Baker to have "his guys" who aren't really producing blocking productive young players? Something doesn't add up.

    I agree. I'd really like to see Dusty keep the lineup the same for at least a week to see what happens. The last time we did that we won 7 straight, I believe.

    What would be wrong with using the same lineup as last (except Lee at 1st and Walker at 2nd.) night for a few games? God forbid we let anyone geta ny momentum.

    One othe, minor quibble: Ramirez can opt out of his deal after 2006, so I'm leery of any move that could give him reason to, ie: not improving the team this offseason.

    I hope Pie isn't in Chicago until September of 2006 at the soonest. I'd rather start Greenberg or Hairston everyday in 2006 than rish Pie, and go through the same thing we are going through right now with another 5 tool CF.

    Bruce, does anyone ever ask Dusty point blank why he says things like "cedeno is here to play" and then sticks with neifi despite his nosedive?

    Thanks for the sentiments but no, thanks. I have a hard enough time with the English language. And my recent forays into sabermetrics have taken me into the dangerous world of numbers. I'll remain your loyal servant and gadfly to the Cubs. Bruce! Tell us: Is what's going on just the beginning, or a move on it's own? BTW, great article today!

    But it seems unnecessary to set up Baker for a fall. Hasn't he done enough to merit getting fired without "rookie entrapment" on Hendry's part? The other scenarios are just as far fetched. Such as, if it wasn't a precursor to something bigger, why not just call up Kelton and Grieve or Hubbard? Or why would Hendry risk trashing Murton's trade value/development arc? Why would he call up to rookies with Baker as the manager? This move frankly makes little sense on it's own. The only way it makes sense is if it's the first of a series of moves.

    I can see this scenario playing out: Hendry tells Dusty to stop screwing around with Cedeno and play him everyday, and to prove he's serious calls up Murton and Greenberg, and tells Dusty to play them right away. Dusty agrees one on one, then makes the statement he made earlier that "we've got veteran guys here too". Note that this is similar to the statement he had about Cedeno's call up. "He's here to play". Dusty then proceeds to play Murton/Greenberg as often as he has Cedeno (2 starts in 10 games). Hendry then fires Baker for disregarding him. Unless Hendry is completely stupid with his handling of young players, that's one of the few scenarios that make sense.

    Unless this is just the beginning, it seems that all this move will accomplish is waste Murton's time, possibly hurt his development and trade value, and completely wreck CPatt's psyche (or whatever was left). Thus, there has to be more to this.
