  1. You really think it would be that high? Isn't that close to what BJ Ryan could get?
  2. I see Bruce lurking. Any insider infor on the contract, Bruce? :D
  3. I agree. This could be good news or bad news depending on the pricetag. Do you really see it being higher than like a $12-14m contract over 3 years? Hendry only overpays for his bench players. Dempster also has only had 1 good season in the pen, so it wouldn't make sense to pay him a premium based on that?
  4. If the average salary is around $4m, then it's a great 1st step in stabilizing the bullpen.
  5. That's cause the league doesn't know him yet. Once the league knows him, he will be lucky to get a double. You're kidding, right?
  6. The danger there is that Dusty might platoon a lefty with Murton a la Holla/Dubois. I think Murton has done enough with his 145 AB's to calm fears that he'll be a bust. It's not like Dubois who had a cup of coffee last year. Murton has had success over enough of a sample size that we don't have to really have a backup plan on the 25 man. Keep Grieve in AAA if necessary, but DON"T gove Dusty a veteran crutch to keep one of our brightest prospects on the bench.
  7. I don't think Giles was ever a free agent
  8. This thread is a GREAT idea. It's giving me a great idea of what I'm going to miss with my wedding/honeymoon at the end of July. Of course, I might have to give someone here my cell so that can keep me informed at the trade deadline :D
  9. Murton. Hands down. BTW, when can we officially bag the whole "He can't hit for power" stuff? Here's his line this season: G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG 48 129 17 42 3 2 7 13 70 16 21 2 1 397 .543 .326 I think that's good power for a rookie OF who jumped from AA in only 129 AB's.
  10. TBCF: I think the difference is in the context most of the time. If someone is calling a move or decision stupid, idiotic, or whatever, it's one thing. If they use the adjectives in the midst of a larger statement, it's borderline. If it's used in an ad hominem style then it's over the line. I think personally that the people here are good enough and smart enough to refrain from just insulting or demeaning players with silly nicknames or derisive nicknames. A simple "Corey sucked this year" does the job just as well. *edit* all best are off in the Rants section, though. What's the difference to posting Corey or Corey K's too much? Same thing if you ask me. What about Sammy Soso or just saying Sammy Sosa is an egotistical primaddona, selfish jerk? Same thing again Because one is in the context of a larger, more well thought out argument and the other is childish name calling.

  12. I expect Hendry to come out and say that the goal is to win the World Series next year. I don't give a crap about being "competitive". Technically the team was "competitive" until late August. The goal every year should be to win the title, and even more so for this organization.
  13. Hopefully the other beat writers in this town will write similar articles to pu some pressure on Hendry to make better baseball decisions. I'd rather see articles like this one than articles just saying the Cubs should throw money at Damon, Furcal, etc.
  14. We had 2 or 3 guys that could pull it off. I always thought it was very cool
  15. I have a nice scar thanks to that move. Too bad for him I had already buried the ball upper 90. 8)
  16. Two good trades? Even as a loyal, loyal Choi defender, I'm compelled have to say that Hendry has at least one more "good" trade . . . I was trying to play it safe, since Choi is still pretty hotly debated round these parts. .
  17. NC Women's soccer. I thought we were talking about sports here. ;) (That was meant to be a soccer joke, btw, not a women's sports joke.) Grrrrr. [slidetackles BK] Quick, BK, pretend you're hurt so he gets a yellow card. Unless BK secretly plays for the Mexican National Team, it probably won't work. And I'll tackle him spikes up next time he bashes the world's game :P
  18. I've heard there are a lot of good baseball players playing baseball...
  19. I've heard that, but I don't know what good it could do. I really think the best thing for Corey would be to pull a Ricky Williams and get as far away from baseball as possible for a couple months. I think that, as Cubs fans, we'd all like to see the guy succeed, ideally, despite how frustrating it is hearing about his talent for so long and not seeing results on the field. I also think everyone agrees that Corey has been dreadful this season, wasn't great last season, and can't be counted on as a contributor in the future until proven otherwise. Somewhere in him is a good baseball player. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't, but I want him to succeed with us.
  20. NC Women's soccer. I thought we were talking about sports here. ;) (That was meant to be a soccer joke, btw, not a women's sports joke.) Hey now, BK... :D
  21. I'll take it seriously. I think that, with a winter away from baseball to reset his mind, Corey *could* be considered an option to bat 8th and play a good defensive CF given a good ST, but be a prime candidate to be replaced via a trade deadline move. I think that the days of Corey being considered a top player, or even a guy who just needs time and patience to become a star, are over. I think the best he could hope to become is Mike Cameron. I think the Cubs probably trade him for cents on the dollar this winter at the GM meetings, though. He has little to no chance of success here in Chicago.
  22. In reference to ARam missing 15-25 games, i think the club assigned him a trainer to work on lower body flexibility and strength. i'd venture to say he won't miss a great deal of time in 2006 because of his hamstrings...
  23. What bothers me more than the last 2 seasons is that Hendry has basically abandoned the farm system he worked so hard to create. It's been mismanaged, we've held onto guys longer than we should have before trading them, we don't give position players like Murton and Cedeno proper shots at starting everyday, and we haven't trading surplus pitching to fill holes on the team. I'm wondering how much of this has to do with Baker's influence and how much is impatience and/or poor decisions by Hendry. I can think of at least 4 Cub prospects that should have been traded, but instead of selling high we sold them for cents on the dollar. Bruce, do you have any insight on this?
  24. I think we're at the point where we almost have to count on other teams signign the crap from our roster. Rusch and Perez, to me, are 2 guys that could have some interest from teams like Washington, Seattle, Detroit, San Diego... ...I'm really hoping that Hendry has some of these decisions made for him, in case Dusty has more of his ear than we think.
  25. If Hendry didn't do his homework when it comes to Baker and his habits/trends/whatever, then he's incompetent, and simply lucked into the 2 good trades he made as GM thanks to Pittsburgh and L.A. being stupid. Hendry has to take away the dead weight from this team, because the dead weight just happens to be the guys Baker has man-love for. If on November 10th or whatever, the first thing we read is that contracts were tendered to Macias and Perez, I think the board might melt.
