  1. Detroit with Garcia is about a billion times better than they were the first time we played.
  2. Have we come up with a valid Giles Contract yet?
  3. Anyone marginally excited?
  4. Not unless you want to give up Pie, Williams and Hill. And that might not even be enough. Who cares. We gave up Garland, Willis, Joe Carter and I'm sure many others. Who did we get in return? My point. If we are going to give up top prospects, at least get an All Star in return. Manny would be a huge boost to the offense. Prospects are just that, prospects. Use them to your advantage. Dont get me wrong, i would not make a habit of doing this, I dont want this to be like the Yankee farm system, but this is Manny. I want to win, and the only way to do that is to take some chances. I agree with your general sentiment, but like I said, I'm not even sure if that would be enough, and I'm not crazy about giving up the best positional prospect in the system.

  6. which sucks, because burnitz would be an awesome 4th OF. but with dusty managing, he wouldn't be that far down on the depth chart. it's staggering how Dusty handicaps the way our roster is built.
  7. I really wish we had enough firepower to go after him.
  8. I can't believe Rusch would agree to come back unless he was guaranteed a rotation spot. He started to make noise about that at the end of the year, IIRC. At least that's where he would theoretically be at his best. If we use him as a swing guy again he's going to suck. His stats as a reliever are Estes-esque. At least as a starter he was okay. And let me go on record saying that unless we get a really good impact bat, I'd rather have Williams be the 5th starter with Hill as the swingman and save $2.5m than resign Rusch. Like I said, it's a total Linus move. Let's hope it's the only Linus move this winter. Let's hope that this is all a bad dream and that Rusch doesn't sign with us. It still isn't official, right? I'm still holding on to hope that Hendry isn't this dumb. I don't think it's official, but I think it's almost a certainty. But if he keeps Rusch and lets go of Macias and Perez, I won't complain. If he does all three, MacPhail needs to maybe assert himself and take the security blanket away from Baker

  10. Where do you get 4 years? The reported offer is for 2. I think he is including the previous two years, suggesting the Cubs have already been living on borrowed time with a pitcher who has mediocre periphrials. Yeah, it's like Hendry doesn't know when to walk away from the table. Let's hope it doesn't carry over to a certain SS who should never be a starter on a contending team...
  11. I have to wonder something. Hendry should know by now that Rusch is at his best as a regular starter. However, this makes me curious... Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Maddux, Hill, Williams, and Rusch can all start next season. I'm thinking that guys such as Pinto and Nolasco will also be ready for the rotation if called upon during some point next season. Yet, there's only a 5 man rotation. I'm thinking this deal just made Rich Hill and Jerome Williams much more expendable... What if these 2 brought in a Manny Ramirez or another 30/100/300/380 hitter? Which is too bad, since I would rather hold on to Williams than keep Rusch. That would be great, but I think Boston would want more proven impact guys for Manny.

I'm thinking this deal just made Rich Hill and Jerome Williams much more expendable... Are you saying what I think you're saying because if you are I might agree. If Hendry does that I want an impact bat and not Soriano. Soriano is exactly the player Hendry coverts: toolsy, power, fast. Those 30 SB's must look awfully tempting to the scout in him. I hope I'm wrong.

  14. Unless the Cubs are moving Murton to SS in a double switch. That would prove the existence of the "Dusty Dice". And be hilarious. While they're at it they should move ARam to CF, Lee to C and Barrett to closer. Once Macias went to CF anything is possible. I'll take Glendon being signed as long as Macias, Perez and Burnitz are not. I would also take that tradeoff.
  15. Will he get consistent work again? It's hard to say as it depends on who the Cubs aquire for the pitching staff. If they do get Burnett or Lowe probably not. I'm not counting on Wood being a starting pitcher until July at the earliest so maybe he'll be in his slot until Wood is ready. Then it becomes even more imperative to fix the offense.

  17. He was going to get $2M if he picked up his player option anyway. Maybe the Cubs figured signing him to a 2-year deal for say, $2.5M in 2006 and $3.5M in 2007 (I'm making those numbers up) would be good insurance for injuries this season, and some rotation protection after 2006 should Maddux and Wood both leave via free agency. I will remind you that in 5 starts in May he pitched 30 innings and gave up only 8 earned runs, and then in September he had 5 starts where he pitched 31 innings and gave up a respectable 12 earned runs, and went 4-0. He was only really bad in June when he started against the Yankees and Red Sox, and was horrendous out of the pen. I think it's fair to say, he has been an effective starter in 2004 and 2005. I don't see a move like this hurting the Cubs offseason plans. They could still go after another starter in free agency, which would be the clue that they are planning on taking things very, very slow with Wood. Hoops, The problem with Rusch in the swing role is that, as you said, he stinks as a relief pitcher. If Hendry is worried about injuries again perhaps that's an issue that should be addressed instead of signing Rusch to fill in.
  18. $3m for a long reliever/spot starter? With all the bulk arms in our system? This is indicative of Hendry's awful habit of overpaying for mediocrity. We could get the same production out of Hill or someone else for league minimum money. This $3m here, $2.5m there stuff adds up after a while into money poorly spent.
  19. If the Cubs are stupid enough to play a guy with 2 years of leg inuries in the OF with no prior experience over a cheap, talented alternative, then this organization deserves all the criticism it gets.
  20. Interesting, they might consider Swisher for CF too. Not if they care about defense. Swisher was apparently bad in the OF this season.
  21. 150 AB's is enough of a sample size for me, unless Dunn or Manny somehow fel into our laps. You gotta go with Murton.
