  1. I would be a little. It would make more sense for Cincinatti to trade the guys who have the most value. That team needs a lot of help. They aren't close to contending in this division. If they could sell Dunn and Pena off for a combined 6 players, 2 or 3 of them being near ML ready arms, they'd be much better off than trading Kearns, who's value is much lower, to us for maybe a couple bulk rule 5 arms. Plus, why would we want Kearns? To play RF? I'd be dissapointed in that. LF? I'd be bloody angry at that. Can he play CF?
  2. Because all those guys see is 2 big names.
  3. If Anaheim asked for Dunn, the Reds would probably hold out for Erwin Santana and that SS prospect they have. If I were O'Brein, I would look to deal both Pena and Dunn.
  4. It depends on what Hendry decides to do with the bullpen, with the rotation, the bench, and his current players. What if he extends Lee? How much will he set aside if Aramis opts out or if we need to swing a deadline deal? There should be enough to spend on both, but only if Hendry properly prioritizes the needs on the team. The Rusch contract may be proof that he still will overpay for bench/backup players that aren't worth it.
  5. Um, okay. That's unexpected. I can just hear the anti-Beane types celebrating both DePodesta and Epstein both leaving their jobs within days of each other.
  6. I honestly would rather take my chances on Cedeno providing good defense and occassional offense and save that $4-9m for landing Giles. I think Nomar is done as an elite player in the league. Maybe as a 3B, but I don't want him as our 3B, and I don't want him as our LF. If signing Nomar didn't limit our ability to sign Giles, and I knew he'd be open to a sort of utility role where he'd back up SS and 3B when needed, and he cost $4m max, then I'd think otherwise.
  7. I agree - I've always thought he was one of the most overrated minds in baseball. My impression is that he's very good at dissecting in game situations, but terrible when it comes to evaluating players and teams as a whole. Yeah, he doesn't do a good job adaping to new methods of evaluating the players. He's far too married to old school methodology.
  8. Berrian is out for at least 5-6 weeks. I'm thinkin Gage will be our guy not that it is a good thing. I'd rather let Wade start.
  9. I'm surprised Terry or Dan didn't ask Stone, "why can't the Cubs get Furcal and Giles?" The Score hosts don't really confront Stone on anything.
  10. Oh, and here's hoping that Gammo is right this time!
  11. :?: I can understand wanting to allocate resources elsewhere than SP, but if we were to target one, Millwood would be my guy. Why don't you like him? I would rather have Burnett. If you're going to give big money to one of them, Millwood would be the safer bet,, bar none. Burnett may have more potential, but Millwood is a proven horse.
  12. Yet more evidence that Stone shouldn't be a GM.
  13. Put Ramon Hernandez in center. shortstop no, we're putting Burnitz at SS, Ramirez in CF, Lee will catch, and Barrett will be the set up man for Neifi.
  14. Another thread derailed so people can bash Dusty, Macias, and Perez. How original! On topic - I think Gammons is spot on with the returning players. Wagner and Konerko probably stay put. Manny won't go anywhere. Ryan and Burnett will get big deals, that's a bit of a no-brainer. With regards to Garciaparra - why wouldn't it be feasible to play Murton in right? Because of his arm? Nomar in right? I'm not sure why Nomar on the Cubs means Murton doesn't play the other corner spot. It is not wise to put a player with a 2 year history of serious leg injuries in an OF spot, particularly when he has no experience doing so. If Nomar isn't a SS, he has much less value, and I'd rather pay Murton the leage minimum to get about the same production with a far less risk of injury than I would bring Nomar back at 10 times the cost just in case he can master LF. Do we really need more questions in our OF?
  15. Oh well. I don't think that's $3m well spent, but it's over and done with, and at least it wasn't spent on Perez.
  16. Honestly, if Nomar wants to extend his career and be at less risk for injury, a move to LF for the rest of his career would be in his best interest, imo. Maybe so, but for the Cubs next year I'd much prefer Murton starting in LF than taking the chance that Nomar can adjust to LF AND not have another leg injury playing a position where he has to cover more ground.
  17. There are two teams if you read between the lines of what his agent has said: Anaheim and Cleveland. Hmm. Then that 3-way trade makes the most sense for Boston.
  18. Manny's 10/5 rights really put Boston in a quandary. I don't think Manny wants to go to Arizona. I still think Gammons' 3-way deal rumour of Manny going to Anaheim, a bunch of prospects going from Anaheim to Arizona, and Troy Glaus and a prospect heading to Boston makes a lot of sense. When do those 10/5 rights kick in? http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=108090 Already kicked in. Ouch. That's going to really, really hamper their efforts. I can't imagine there are too many teams that he'd accept a trade to.

  20. Maybe it would have been wiser to move with an entire offseason in front of you than to do what they did and have to settle for what's left at the last minute. Also, Sosa didn't prevent them from paying Nomar $8.25m. Could there not have been a cheaper SS option, such as Eckstein for $2.3m or trading for Lugo? Making decisions sooner allows you time to adjust your plan. Going by your logic we were not serious players for just about any FA. What of the logic that tells you it's smart to go into a season with a grossly inadequate offseason?
  21. They've got this Mark Teixeira kid that might turn into a decent hitter. :D Then they could trade for Delgado and be monstrous on the IF. Teixiera, eh? Never heard of him. :P Seriously, though, if they wanted to trade for Delgado wouldn't they use Blalock for those purposes, rather than deal him for some relatively unproven pitchers from us and then have to deal more players for Delgado? It depends on the approach they want to take. If I were GM and my my goal was to compete with Anaheim and Oakland in 2006, I'd look to: 1. Deal Soriano for pitching, move Young back to 2B 2. Sign Furcal to play SS and be a huge upgrade to the defense 3. Sign a free agent innings-eater that has a demonstrated ability to keep the ball in the park I'd personally try to hold on to the young pitching they have in Diamond, Volquez and the other one. That guy is good. His name looks cool on his jersey, too :P Hey, shoot me. I'm too lazy to look up the third best pitcher in an AL team's system. :D Eh. No worries. I'm too lazy to even finish this sen-

  23. If Manny is really on the blocks, I can see AZ being a good trading partner for Boston. They do have a lot of different options this offseason.
