  1. That's the worst part. I don't really dislike St Louis all that much (I loathe Houston), but the fact that Scrappy McHustler won the MVP makes me sick, because not only wil we be subjected the the standard "heart wins over talent" boilerplate sportswriting/radio for the next 12 months, but there's a better than 75% chance that Hendry decides he needs to field a team that features below average corner OF's, a terrible C, a godawful middle IF, and a mediocre starting rotation anchored by a solid #1 in order to win. isn't that what we have? but a little better with barrett? I could make a legit argument that with a healthy Derrek Lee, we'd have a better team.

I'm pretty sure this cements Ramirez being gone. We will all love the scrappy David Bell or Rich Aurillia at third next season. :pukel: Very few things could make me quit being a Cubs fan, but if that happens, I might take a break until Hendry is fired.

  4. Let's hope Hendry doesn't decide what the Cubs need is a David Eckstein clone.
  5. Agreed, the last thing I am worried about is Aramis signing now. Larger, fish are ready to be caught. Let's go get a stud bat and a stud pitcher and play in late October come 07. There aren't any fish much larger than ARam. I'm hoping your indifference is based on the thought that he will re-sign with the Cubs. If he leaves, Hendry has to get 2-3 impact bats and 2 good pitchers. I can't see Hendry being able to accomlish that. There aren't any fish larger than ARam. He'd be the best FA hitter available.
  6. Just get it done, Jim. 5/$75 is a perfectly reasonable contract for a hitter of Aramis' age and ability.
  7. What would make me feel better if there was any word of progress.
  8. link A half-assed bid isn't going to get us Matsuzaka. Super. Give me that #4 starter, baby! Whoohoo!! I don't understand how it's possible to be "more intrigued" by a much worse player. Nobody's fooled by that wording. The Cubs are going cheap. And old. Again. Just, wow.
  9. LF. Alou and Thomas are great fastball hitters. They both could hit 30Hr next year. Thomas is signifigantly more patient at the plate, with more power. Also, I recall Alou being a much better breaking ball hitter. Better at hitting breaking balls than fastballs? No way. Or do you mean better than Thomas at hitting breaking balls? I was trying to recall watching Alou as a Cub, and I remember thinking that it was either inside fastballs or curveballs he used to just kill. I guess it was fastballs.

  11. I'll try to answer: No, there is no guarantee he won't get injured, but if he's platooning and PH, he's less likely to get injured, as Vance already said. One person thinks he'll cost a lot, but then thinks no one will want to offer him $7 million, so he won't cost that much. And please explain your third question. He doesnt deserve 7 million, but some GM will take the risk of signing him to that kind of deal. Who? Oakland. They had success with Big Hurt, I dont see why they wouldnt take another risk on a Big Hurt type player. Where would Alou fit in with Oakland? How is Alou anywhere near Thomas in ability?
  12. Again, Sheffield will probably piss and moan about a contract extension if he's traded. Add that to the fact that he's extremely injury prone and old, and that his production is beginning to drop precipitiously, and there's no reason to want him. If you want a RH option for RF, there are at least 4 good FA options and one in house option that will cost less and be less of a headache.
  13. Which is crap. Guerrero tried to go through Joseph. Getting elbowed in the face is incedental contact when you try and run through another player. No other league in the world would have suspended Joseph for incedental contact. And as far as Klinsi goes...let's hope it gets done.
  14. It shouldn't shock you. There are a ton of Bear fans out there that are pretty dumb. B&B were talking on the Score last night about how the Bulls fans that call into their show are actually usually pretty smart about basketball, and said they were WAY better than the dumb Bears fans they get calling in. There are FAR fewer stereotypes of "Bulls Basketball" than there are about "Bear Football". That's probably why. People really eat up the preconcieved notions about football in general and Chicago football in general, and the result is a sea of ignorance.

  16. Are you insinuating that the thought will never cross our GM's mind?
  17. Not only would I leap at the chance to Blog for NSBB, but I'd happily pay a monthly fee for the right to do so. If you're looking to get additional revenue in order to help expidite the rest of the enhancements, the Blogs would be a good thing to put up first. There are all fantastic ideas, Tim!
  18. I wish he could lend some insight as to why there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency on the part of the Cubs. It sure seems like Hendry is being extremely casual about this. Does he not know that Ramirez would likely be the best FA available if he opts out? Wasn't he quoted towards the end of the season as saying that he'd like to get it done a couple weeks after the season ended? What happened to that plan, Jim? Sadly, this is typical Hendry. Wait, and wait, and wait. And just wait-we'll end up with Scott Moore at 3B.
  19. Translated by Babelfish: Better translation: "Everyone knows how Lou Piniella is; he's an intense man, but he is also a good manager".
  20. If you're talking ARod with the Yankees, and you're selling Prior, Eyre and Moore, and they say they'll do it for Howry instead of Eyre, you'd walk?
  21. I wouldn't mind trading Eyre or Howry. I think one of them is expendable. Keep in mind bullpens are very unpredicatble quantities. Year to year the performances tend to be unstable.
  22. I'm sure he'd want an extension. I'm not sure I'd want to give it to him.
  23. First of all, I find it really, really unlikely that this is true. There's no way a NTC goes unreported, nor do I think the fact that MacPhail wrote the contract would go unreported before this offseason. However, this fits in somewhat nicely with my theory about the Tribune media laying the groundwork for Ramirez not being signed. By Blaming Andy for the opt-out clause AND a supposed NTC that prevented him from being moved in July, Hendry has some cover now and a scapegoat in case anyone's upset Ramirez walks and we get nothing for him. So you now have all your bases covered. Those that have no clue will read all the stories about his "loafing" and think that the Cubs got rid of a lazy bum. Those that actually have the ability to think critically will blame MacPhail, and not Hendry, for not getting anything for him, and for allowing for the opt out in the first place. /takes off tinfoil hat.

  25. "Could have" is not good enough. The Cubs need to start operating on a "what are they likely to do" basis, not "what could they do if everything goes well". I'm not a big Lilly guy, but you can't make decisions based on what might happen, you have to base it on what is most likely to happen. Hill might contend for the Cy Young next year. He might have an ERA over 9.00. But neither is all that likely. Murton might outproduce Miguel Cabrera next year, but he's probably not going to. Pierre might have a .375 OBP next year, but he most likely won't. No, there is zero chance that this happens. What if Miggy blows out his knee? :P
