Yeah, I'm getting there too. It's not like this decision came out of nowhere. Fukudome has had months, if not years, to think about it. I'm all for him taking his time to field offers and choose the best one, but he at least must have made his mind up if he's going to play in the MLB next year. More than that, I don't want Hendry to sit around and wait, just to have him either stay in Japan or sign with San Diego, and we end up with Jeromy Burnitz v3. I don't like that we're letting this one guy who can't make up his mind tie up other moves.

come on, there's a lot more valuable stats than batting average. Is their a mental beakdown stat? You have, by far, the worst baseball anaysis of anyone currently posting on this board. You dont have to be a stat head to know that hes injury prone, a basket case, and not even an up grade over Jacque Jones offensively or defensively. He's a ton better than Jacque. It's not even close to a valid comparison.

For the record, we'd be robbing the Padres in any Pie for Greene deal. The Cubs window to win is right now. Ramirez, Lee and Soriano aren't going to maintain this level of play for much longer. We have jack crap in the minors coming up that's closer than 2 years away. Pie might or might not correct the flaws he has and become a good player. However, we have nothing remotely in our system SS wise like Khalil Greene. As Meph said, Cedeno does not count, because our management don't seem to care for him. We had close to the worst SS production in the league last season. CF was bad, but SS was far, far worse. Happily, Fukudome could play CF, and we're still the frontrunners there. All he costs is money. Thus, the upgrade Greene would provide at SS would blow away anything Pie would give us in CF over what Jones gave us there last season. We'd keep a couple of trading chips in case we want to fill another hole, which also can't be overlooked. Meph said it much more succinctly than I, but he's absolutely correct in saying that giving up Pie for Greene would be a good move.

Matt Murton is a pre-prime, cheap OF who's proven he can be a decent, cheap OF. We currently have no RF. Brian Roberts is a 30 year old 2B who's marginally better than our current 2B and makes $4.2m. He would cost the Cubs 2 or 3 good trading chips. Thus, Matt Murton has more value to the Cubs than this trade for Brian Roberts. Second, leadoff hitter isn't a position. It's an old timey way of looking at a lineup's composition (which really doesn't matter much when you look at it). Offense is offense, regardless if it is hitting 1st, 6th or 8th. Finally, baseballs don't travel differently in the minors as opposed to the majors. Pie's minor league career is a perfectly justified method of evaluating his defensive ability. And for what it's worth, 40 ML games isn't that small of a sample size.

You are making far too much sense for this discussion. All Star Games=meaningless Leadoff Hitter= not a position. Rickey Henderson = leadoff hitter. Rickey Henderson was a good OF.

Not really, those tools are there. His range and arm are as good as anyone in the game. Every new player coming to Wrigley will misplay them. I think right now, Taveras is the only one better. Maybe...I wasn't thinking just Wrigley, if just Wrigley you could be right. I still think he needs to make better reads though he over runs balls alot! If he overruns balls, that's not a bad thing. I'd rather have a CF'er that can overrun balls that most CF'ers can't get. The only ball I saw him overrun in the OF last year was a ball hit to the gap that was skidding on the ground. He was at full speed and did great just getting to the ball to stop it. He couldn't slow down to retrieve the ball, but the RF was able to pick it and throw it back to prevent a run scoring from first. K well than u obviously didn't see him overrun a bunch of balls this year and also get horrible reads on balls that should be routine to catch. don't get me wrong the guy is a good fielder and its his first year. Im just saying u guys are praising him a little to much for 40 games in the major leagues. You do know what Ping does for a living, right?

The more I think about this, the more I'm realizing it's stupid to be trading for Roberts when a tweak in the package gets you Tejada, which upgrades an actual need.

If I were running the O's, I'd realize that we were going to get worse before we got better. For Roberts...I'd want Gallagher to start. Probably Colvin and then Marshall. I could then live with Gallagher and Marshall. EDIT: I'd want EPatt as well.

Hendry has made some nice moves. Walker for Ceda was good. Neifi for the C prospect whose name I can't remember was good. The Nomar trade was good, even though it didn't work out. Lee and Aramis were good trades, but neither took much effort (Lee was going to be non tendered by Florida and Ramirez was the price we had to pay to get Lofton. We had the ability to absorb 2003 and 2004's salary for Aramis. Other teams didn't. The Barrett deal was nice. However, look at the bad deals. We demolished Sosa's value, then got Mike Fontenot for him (Crouthers retired and we got cash for him). We demolished Corey Patterson's value, then got nothing for him. The Pierre trade. The Maddux for Izturis trade. The Trachsel trade was the worst of these. We gave up 3 players who could have been chips in another deal for a completely awful baseball player who cost us a couple games down the stretch. The Jones deal resulted in us getting a nice AA arm, but trading Jones and Ohman for $3m and a AA player isn't good. It's poor asset management. The bad deals were just freaking awful. -

SALARY DUMP So if a trade is fueled by a Salary Dump, does that somehow disqualify its value? Plenty of other teams had the opportunity to take advantage of this situation as well. Not really. Not every team can absorb salary.
