  1. I don't think Volstad is coming back. I'm guessing he'll be replaced by another Volstad-like reclamation project. I don't think reclamation is the right word. Volstad will be 26, has had some major league success and will be under control for awhile. It's a little early to let him go with the current lack of major league starters. He'll be one of the guys to pay attention to for the rest of the season. Agreed. There's really no benefit to giving Germano or Coleman starts over him. Volstad should indeed finish the season on the big league team regardless. However, I would be interested in seeing what he could do out of the pen. If he pitches 1 inning a game, it should be less likely to be of the "of doom" variety. Hasn't the idea been put out there that Volstad has been getting into trouble when runners get on base, implying that he isn't as effective out of the stretch? If that's what's causing his bad innings, then a move to the pen won't help it at all.
  2. And 5 walks in the last 10 games. I really hope he can play a legitimate third base (though I still doubt it). IMHO, they should start giving him some reps at the corner OF spots as well as 3B. Next year, I'd love to see Ian Stewart get another shot post wrist-Sx with Vitters in the OF. If we can trade Soriano, he could have left. If not, DeJesus should be an easy trade and Vitters could have right. We could actually luck our way into a potent offense if enough goes right between Stewart, Jackson, and Vitters. I believe it's been said that he'd also never be better than average in the OF due to a lack of speed. So, you'd have similar defensive concerns at both 3B and the corner outfield with his offensive value taking a huge dip if he changed positions. In his early 20's still, Vitters needs to be playing 3B until he proves he can't. I'm not going to get too concerned with squeezing a 1 or 2 win season out of a 28 year Ian Stewart.

  4. Sounds like you should show up to work on Monday and throw a baseball at their head.
  5. The men play their under 23 team in the Olympics, I think a few spots are open to older players who are on their way out of international soccer. There's speculation that this will be the direction the US goes in basketball after this Olympic team.
  6. I have to admit I'm a little confused. Are you advocating putting Dempster in the bullpen as a good baseball decision, or just saying it's a defensible enough decision so that it would be possible to 'bench his stupid ass', 'throw a big FU in his face' and 'tell him to go to hell' as Hawk4Hall argued, starting this whole discussion.
  7. First time, he was coming off TJS and a 6+ ERA. The second time, he would be coming off a league leading ERA among starters and on a team with a lack of starting pitching. The point isn't even whether or not there would be significant consequences. If you want to turn your organization into one of the premier franchises, it's probably not best to act like a petulant child.
  8. they negotiated the cba in which that is legal to do. plus, he'd be getting paid so labor laws really wouldn't apply. it's legal to not play a player because you're butthurt he used his 10/5 rights? i'm talking about putting him in the bullpen or something, but no, i don't think benching him would be illegal. although very stupid in wasting a roster spot that way. If it was construed as a 'discplinary' action that wasn't caused by action that is detrimental to baseball, they could file a grievance.
  9. players don't care about these things players don't care about management that intentionally tanks a players market value in retaliation for the player exercising their right earned for their decade of service?
  10. Just imagine how many players would want to play under that kind of no-nonsense front office
  11. it's gotta be the shoes?
  12. WHY do we keep [expletive] on things that would bring in revenue to our broke-ass city? WHY. Theres not many examples of the public coming out ahead in financing new stadiums. The city is going to have to forego a lot of tax revenue to get this deal done.
  13. I just posted the video of Jay doing the 7th inning stretch on a friends facebook wall and soon after Facebook recommended the 'Vanderbilt Greek Life' page as one I might like. Gotta love that algorithm
  14. Think you're forgetting a guy who has been a major factor as well. You're right, how could I forget Reed Johnson
  15. Soriano hitting very well, catchers getting healthy, Wood replacing Volstad in the rotation and the bullpen seem to be the big reasons the team has been better. When all that comes together, it might not be a .500 team, but it's a good enough one to be able to string together a run like the one we've seen.
  16. I'm actually kinda surprised how many of those are still in the system. For being rated something like a bottom 5 system that year, it turned out quite well. Samardzija, Rizzo, Castro and a fraction of Garza all came directly from that list with Vitters and Castillo on the cusp of getting a shot at being starters. And Lee, despite some heavy struggles to start off at AA, is still considered a top prospect. We fired Hendry too soon. His plans were just starting to take hold. Part of his plan was getting fired and having Theo trade for Rizzo.

  18. We can expect a good deal of trades involving prospects in coming years given the abundance of position players and the organizational holes that can't be addressed internally for awhile. I'm not going to be too concerned about where Vogelbach fits into the equation until he reaches at least AA and cracks a top 100.
  19. If Soriano stuck around somehow for the rest of his contract and he reached 400 homers at some point in the 2014 season (or a long shot chance at the 2013 season), what would the reaction be? A majority of his career and production will have been as a Cub at that point, but I can't imagine him being celebrated as a great Cub or anything.
  20. Casey Coleman 8-0 down the stretch after Garza and Dempster traded
  21. Great outing for Dempster so far, I figure he gets another inning since he's at 65 pitches right now.
  22. Chicago hit 103 today. It's 8:35pm and it's still 95. Pretty miserable, I got the means to air condition one room effectively, and I'm staying in that one room as much as I can when home.
