  1. Well, if we're judging defense by purely subjective measures, wouldn't you agree that it would be difficult to judge it's effect? I could say that the Cubs have the best defense in MLB. How would you refute that? By saying "Nuh uh?" We need to focus on concrete known issues like our lack of OBP and SLG. Izturis doesn't provide any of these things. That's why it's a bad trade. So basically you just said if you can't measure it, it's not worth anything? Try reading the post again. That's not at all what he said.
  2. At the risk of sounding like Brodie Bruce, if you're not going to pay attention to the conversation, don't join in.
  3. Crede is more then just good. He's one of the best 3rd basemen in the league. Uribe and Iguchi are more then just okay up the middle. They are one of the best up the middle combos in the league. Roward is a very good CF and Dye is Good at right. AJ is a above average catcher and PK at first has vastly improved his D the last couple of years. What is this based on? Joe Morgan, Tim McCarver, Kevin Kennedy, Hawk Harrelson...
  4. True, but the stats say that Cleveland should have beaten the White Sox out. They had the same ERA, and scored 49 more runs then the Sox (which was good for 7th in the league-the White Sox finished 13th). If it was a minor thing or not, something happened to give the White Sox ways to win last season-it might have just been luck-but there was certainly something there. Cleveland was not very good the first half of the season while the Sox were red hot. The Indians went on a tear the 2nd half while the Sox came back down to earth a bit. They were 4 over 500 and 15 back on 8/1, and improved to 15 over and 7.5 back on 9/1 and 24 over and only 6 back by season's end.
  5. They had the market cornered on offense. They were an amazing offensive team. They knew they were losing Nomar, and Cabrera was available. And you're over-estimating the impact that Mientkiewicz had on the team. He was mainly a late inning defensive replacement. Millar (and his 297/383/474) was the regular 1B.
  6. Tell that to the White Sox who won a WS on Pitching and Defense. Their team BA was .262 with a .322 OBP and yet they managed to win a WS. they hit a crapload of homers. True..but they had 200 HR to our 194. They had a .262 AVG with a .322 OPB while we had a .270 AVG with a .324 OBP. So what was the difference between the two teams offensively? The difference must be in the clutch hitting because defense means very, very, very little. Honestly, that's the first time I've heard that Defense means very little in baseball. In fact it's crazy. You can go back to the 2004 Red Sox when they upgraded their defense they went on to a WS title. Defense is hugely important! I can't believe you really believe that? It was a whole lot more than their defense. If you don't believe me
  7. Their pitching may have had a lot to do with it.
  8. I still have Guzman ahead of the other three and I know I'm not the only one (heck Mateo is pretty far back). Let Guzman do what's best fo him, especially given the injuries he's coming off of. Ron's right. perhaps switching to closer might be what is better for guzman. i dont look at making him a closer as giving up on him but instead it would be filling a need & maybe putting him in a better position to succeed. He needs to work on getting himself some innings, and he'll be just fine. I look for him to be a solid #3 within 3 years. I really like da Goooooooz.
  9. Mine was probably about boogers.
  10. Did somebody say crack? http://www.uvasportsfanatic.com/tyrone%20biggums.jpg
  11. You didn't ask about what's feasible, you asked what I wanted. And no, you don't have to have guys like Mientkiewicz in your lineup. I am a firm believer in offense first, offense last. Defense is an afterthought.
  12. We all knew Maddux would not net an impact player. Trading him for something redundant is stupid especially when that redundancy will cost around $5 next year and the GM is glowing at the thought of having him for a few years".
  13. I wish Dusty were man enough to make a statement like that. How much of a man does it make Hendry for him to make that statement, and then continue his non-OBP, fast, toolsy player philosophy that has utterly failed this year? Jimbo's an incompetent dumbass, but I respect him for taking some responsibility for his mistakes. Is responsibility simply apologizing? I guess I'm not impressed until he fixes those mistakes...and I've not seen any signs that is close to happening. I think he's taking some responsibility for counting on injured pitchers. I'm afraid he'll over-compensate by overpaying a couple of mediocre starters with bad peripherals.
  14. OBP - getting on base. That should be self-explanatory. I could care less if he's RH or LH, if he can bunt or run. He needs to get on base. What about the 7 and 8 hitters? I want all of my players to be adept at getting on base. OBP is my #1 for 1-8, SLG is #1a in 3-6. My 7-8 are the ones with the lower OPS.
  15. Our defense wasn't bad. Our offense sucks. Hendry tried to improve the wrong thing once again. True, but sometimes you have to make the moves when you can get them. He got a chance to improve the defense (and a smaller improvement on offense) now. That leaves the offseason to improve the offense-we weren't going to get a shortstop anyway, so we can still improve the team on offense in the positions we were already going to. The defensive upgrade is not significant enough to make up for the fact that our offense lost Todd Walker and gained Cesar Izturis.
  16. Our defense wasn't bad. Our offense sucks. Hendry tried to improve the wrong thing once again.
  17. Thanks, it makes me feel somewhat better. Any indications we could have done better than Izturis though?
  18. OBP - getting on base. That should be self-explanatory. I could care less if he's RH or LH, if he can bunt or run. He needs to get on base.
  19. It's not hatred toward Izturis. It's hatred toward the idea of Izturis. DEFENSE UP THE MIDDLE WAS NOT THIS TEAM'S PROBLEM.
  20. Maybe Jimi should have made better music.
  21. 1. I don't want to re-sign Pierre. We don't need somebody quick to lead off, we need someone who can get on base. 2. Izturis is a horrible option for #2 because HE DOES NOT GET ON BASE ENOUGH.
  22. Izturis is marginally better defensively. He's not the wizard some are proclaiming him to be. He is horrible offensively. Horrible. His defense will not provide enough value to make up for that.
  23. That's one award that should go away and never come back. It has no meaning, and I hate hearing it used as the only valuable piece of a player's game. In fact, last night I heard 3 different places refer to Izturis as a "2-time Gold Glover and former all-star". First of all, it was 1. Secondly, it doesn't mean a damn thing. And finally, Mark Redman was an all-star.
  24. I think he can save us 30-40 runs a year on defense. He can make 4-5 extra outs per week, which will save us 1-2 runs a week. These will come from partly some balls that he can get to that other people cannot, and partly doing things like turning more double plays effectively when he gets the chance. I think 30-40 is on the high side, but whatever. How many runs would someone like Tejada get us over the course of a season with his offense? Hmm-well, I'd say again about 4-5 hits a week, but that will cause us to get 2-3 extra runs a week because some of those will be XBH, so more like 55-60 runs. The difference between the top 5 shortstops and everyone else offensively is too high to make up for the change in defense. But defensively, Tejada is actually very close to being right on par with Izturis making this look even uglier to me. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/tejadmi01.shtml http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/izturce01.shtml
  25. Yes, silly indeed. Thanks for cutting and pasting my posts. I think I know what I posted, so no need to do it for me. Okay? If you're going to use anectdotal evidence to try and prove a point, you have to assume some will be used in opposition. Which I agree with you, but what point was he trying to make by taking cutting and pasting my posts? You brought it up, you argued the point, then you called it stupid and said it was the last thing you wanted to do.
