I'm not sure what's strange; he was ineffective and as a result, sent down. It's not like he's a guy with a long track record to fall back on. Perhaps if the Cubs rotation was solid they could afford for him to find himself on the 25 man roster but, as it stands, they can ill afford to keep him around. Wuertz had one bad outing, that doesn't make him ineffective. People are getting hung up over his meaningless spring numbers and forgetting that he was an effective reliever with peripherals pointing towards him being even better this year. Like I said, he doesn't have a long track record of success. Guys in his position are subjected to the "what have you done for me lately" treatment. As long as he is unproven, and has options, he will have to pitch well to stay in the MLs. Also, even though he wasn't charged with ER in his first 2 appearances he allowed inherited runners to score. Baker tried to allow him to come into, what should have been, a blow out to regain his confidence and all he did was make the game closer. If he's worthy he'll be back...
