In other words, you have to pay these guys whether they play or not. So the fact that a guy is making big money should not factor into your decision of whether to play him going forward. If cost is fixed for the year, play the guys that will get you the most wins, not the guys that are getting paid the most.

    Exactly. Who knows what kind of player Murton will turn out to be, but I think his performance to date (esp given Burnitz's play over the last couple of months) warrants a good look. Meaning playing against whomever is on the mound, righty or lefty. Does Dusty really think Murton has a better chance of hitting Andy Pettitte than some middle reliever in Houston's pen? On the other hand, as Dusty said, Burnitz and Lawton are here to play. Murton is apparently here for the sunflower seeds.

    Is apparently money. (From Miles) So the reason Murton doesn't play against righties is that he doesn't make enough money. Got it. Makes perfect sense now. :roll:

    I understand that he's hurt now, but if he's healthy and can't run full speed to 1B w/o pulling a quad or groin, should he really be playing baseball? And I'm not talking about the freak incidents like Nomar's - that's a very rare occurence. Generally speaking, a player should be able to run to 1B without pulling something. If not, you may be overpaying for an oft-injured slugger (see Griffey Jr., Ken).

    I agree that ARam has not been hustling. I've read somewhere that he's intentionally not hustling now b/c of his leg injury (so expect some slack here for that). They [EDIT: by "they" I mean the Cubs] would rather have 80% of ARam in the lineup every day than 100% of Macias - a decision I fully agree with. On the other hand, I've seen ARam play seemingly lazy baseball when he's 100% healthy, so I see your point and agree that ARam could be even better if he tried harder. But maybe he's like Manny in that you have to take the good w/ the bad. Given how hard it's been for the Cubs to have even an average 3B since Santo, I guess we'll take what we can get. Oh, and nice dig at the Cards fan. Dig he get booted back to the cheap seats?

    Is Remlinger really worse against right handers and what does that have to do with Adam Dunn?? I think that was clearly a mistake (either by Stone or the interviewer). Stone meant to say that Remy is worse against lefties, otherwise it would be A - false, and B - irrelevant w/ Dunn at the plate.

    I don't want to rain on the parade, but does Corey really have a hot bat? Someone in the game thread yesterday also mentioned Corey's bat. He's 6/22 since his return (.273 AVG) w/ 1 walk (for a .304 OBP). Granted those number are much better than the .235 he's hitting for the year, but 6/22 isn't a hot streak in my book. I'm glad he's playing b/c we need his defense and his offense has been acceptable, but a guy hitting .270 doesn't push this team into the playoffs.

    This is the same catcher that was in the Cubs system for a while (Iowa when I lived in DSM a few years ago, I think). If so, he's probably playing w/ a bit of a chip on his shoulder tonight. No need to make excuses for Prior. He's been giving up the long ball a lot. I'm not trying to make any excuses for Prior. Just saying that getting his first ML HR off the Cubs (and the much-heralded Prior esp) is probably extra sweet for Mahoney.

    Probably the same people who think Neifi has been a "great fill-in at short" based entirely on the month of April.

    Disclaimer: I'm trying arguing that Neifi should be blamed for the Cubs' struggles. But, Neifi pulled quite a trick this season. He had a great April and has been terrible since, but for whatever reason, that's the only month people remember. I don't think anyone expected Neifi to put up the numbers that they expected Nomar to put up, but offensively, he has not "filled in at shortstop fine."

    I think Dusty's penchant for playing Holly, Neifi, and Macias instead of giving young players that tore up AAA a legitmate shot cost us wins. Putting Corey & Neifi 1-2 when they each had OBP at or under .300, instructing batters to be aggressive and downplaying the importance of walking and OBP, his abuse of the young pitching staff - all of these things have hurt the Cubs in wins. I have no idea how to calculate how many wins Dusty has cost the Cubs, but at least this year, a few wins for this team could mean the difference between going to the playoffs and not. I'm not saying we should be leading the Central, but we shouldn't be under .500 in mid-August either.

    The way I understand it is that clubs put nearly all of their players on waivers after the deadline. That way they mask their intentions of trying to trade a particular player or 2. And if someone claims a player that they didn't want to trade, they'd just bring him back anyway.

    Exactly. I absolutely love the Cubs. But I am openly rooting against Neifi now. Every hit = one more start that Nomar or Walker doesn't get.

    I think by "best matchup" he means righty-righty or lefty-lefty. If he looked at stats, Walker (who hits lefties pretty well) would be playing today.
