    To put this in perspective, that's only 4 runs scored behind Furcal and second best among national league leadoff hitters last year. :shock: As such, it's hard to fault his runs scored. But, as Diffusion pointed out earlier, runs scored are a bad statistic to use to evaluate a player. I think you're cherry-picking his response to a particular statement rather than actually attacking his overall point, which is that Pierre is not good.

    In 2004 Pierre hit .380 in (non-sacrifice) bunt attempts. In 2005 he hit .431 when bunting for a hit. And he hit .276 overall in 2005. So his AVG when he doesn't bunt has got to be simply horrible.

    I was hoping that Mitre would be in the trade and not Pinto or Nolassco! :D ESPN is still reporting it as 3 for 1. Andl the websites of the Trib, Daily Herald and Suntimes all still say a deal is close. The DH and Suntimes are last night's stories but the Tribune's site was updated at 7:43 a.m. It says the Marlins are looking for a better offer than the 3 - 1 from another team. If one organization would know what the Cubs are doing, it should be the Tribune, at least that would make sense. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ I think we are gonig to have to wait this one out a little while longer. It will probably end up being the 3-1, but we'll have to wait for some confirmation. So I can still pray that the Yankees will come in and overpay by more than we did?

    We all know you love Wilkerson. :lol: I think you might get your wish, though. It's no secret that Jim Bowden has always been infatuated with c-patt. Corey + Guzman + Nolasco = Wilkerson That seems like ALOT to give up for Wilkerson..... and I stiil can't figure out why we're targeting Gathright - what's the difference between him and Hairston? I think Gathright's faster. :D

    That's a load of poop. I negotiate deals all the time in my practice - that's not a significant gap. More likely that they had a falling out. I don't know the circumstances, but Beane did mention "it was a compensation issue." Both sides may have offered 3 years but for significantly different amounts of cash.

    Have the Cubs discussed moving Angel Guzman to the bullpen, since he can't seem to stay healthy as a starter? if they wont move wood to the pen after watching him get hurt year after year why would it be any different guzman? Because Wood doesn't get hurt year after year. He's got 2 200+ inning seasons, he's got 6 20+ start seasons. Guzman has never been healthy for a full year. Actually, in the 8 seasons since Wood's debut in 98, he has missed significant time in 4 seasons. All of 99, about 10 starts in 00, about 10 starts in 04, and 20+ starts this year (though he pitched in 21 games, half were out of the pen). He had a pretty good 3-year run from 01-03, but I think mg420 is justified in implying that Wood is hurt a lot. Missing 10 or more starts in 4/8 seasons = oft injured in my book.

    Exactly. DePo is a Beane disciple. There's no way he hires Dusty Baker. The guy hit some combination of Patterson, Neifi, and Macias 1-2 for a large chunk of this year. They walked a combined, what, 4 times this year? Bruce - is there any chance Baker isn't back w/ the Cubs next year?

    yeah I was thinking the exact same thing about bout macias and also agree with your ws teams I think that would be the ideal situation. How fitting is it that our 1-2 hitters made the final 2 outs of the season, leaving DLee on deck with the tying runners in scoring position. Perfect cap to this season.

    So, to try to read between the lines, are you saying the majority of the blame for this season falls on Hendry, rather than Baker?

    Sullivan is a moron. Our CF's have a bad OBP this year? Really? Any other insights, Captain Obvious? Oh, our leadoff hitters are doing poorly? You don't say? Isn't this mostly a restatement of the point about CF's since Corey played CF and leadoff for a large chunk of the year (and Hairston handled those two duties for most of the other games)? But the first and last numbers are the dumbest points he makes. "Clutch" hitting and more Henry Blanco would have saved the season? Tim put the "clutch" hitting argument to bed. I can't really state it better than that. And there are enough threads about whether Barrett has been the problem, but enough people have clearly stated that his offense more than makes up for whatever defensive advantage Blanco has. So all I will add it this: CERA is a meaningless stat and Blanco's "pitch-calling" ability would be pretty worthless...given that the dugout calls the pitches. Apparently the only thing worse than Hendry taking Baker's advice would be Hendry taking Sullivan's. It appears that he's either stating the obvious or he's wrong.

    I'll admit, I haven't looked this up, but how many 2-0 counts has Neifi been in this year? I don't remember many PAs where he didn't swing at one of the first 2 pitches. Neifi is one of those players that you don't have to throw a strike to in order to get them out. He doesn't have a low OBP b/c no one will walk him, he has a low OBP b/c he swings at everything. Just yesterday, Len & Bob were saying on the air that Neifi isn't known to walk or take a lot of pitches. He's a hacker. That doesn't necessarily mean he's a bad hitter. The fact that he has a .300 OBP w/ little power means he's a bad hitter.

    Are you serious? You think a "good hitter" can hit the ball exactly where they want (i.e., hitting the ball in the hole left by the SS covering 2nd)? If that were true, wouldn't said hitter hit the ball into a hole in every AB (b/t SS & 3rd, SS & 2B, or 1B & 2B)?

    While that's certainly true at the major league level, as you pointed out, Cedeno was a "spot" starter (at best). But when Nomar went down, Ronny was hitting like .370 at Iowa. He finished the year there .355/.403/.518. Now those numbers don't mean he's going to hit .350 w/ a .900+ OPS at the major-league level, but when you have a guy hitting that well in AAA, why wouldn't you give him a shot? What more is he supposed to do at Iowa? Overall, Ronny had a much more productive year than Neifi, Dusty just didn't give him the opportunity to produce in Chicago.

    Of course he likes playing for Dusty Baker. How many other managers in the game would start him every day (let alone let him hit 2nd). Neifi - please leave. There must be someone else who thinks a good defensive shortstop with a .280 AVG (and a .300 OBP) should start and bat 2nd.
