Which reminds me - I think that thread would get a lot more hits if it were more prevalent on the board.     Someone started a great thread about this stuff in Baseball Discussions entitled "Baseball 101: Spring Training for the Fan." The idea is for people to post Qs about baseball that others can attempt to answer. I think WHIP has been covered, as have a number of other questions.

    I'd rather have Kearns than Dunn at this point, if for no other reason than it would cost us less (in terms of prospects). And it sounds like Kearns wants to be a Cub. BTW - Bruce's last line of that article (last link in the original post) is outstanding. Not so subtle dig at Mr. Morgan.

    The second-half of a season is not the time to teach Soriano to play center (esp when he doesn't appear to want to change positions anyway).

    When Pat just said "a couple of future Hall of Famers facing off" I wasn't paying attention and thought he meant Maddux and Milton. Just realized Griffey Jr. was batting. Phew. I thought he'd truly lost it for a minute.

    I go back and forth on Pat & Ron. They get on some random tangents, but once in a while you get a gem of a line (like my new signature from Ron's pizza story).

    I agree. As a new member myself, I hope he wasn't banned because he shared some information on a deal that hasn't (or may never) go down.

    You just beat me to this. He says Dunn & Kearns "aren't available." Then said the Cubs aren't likely to make any "big" trade, though a deal for someone like Byrnes is possible. Hopefully he means Ken Byrnes or Monty. Sorry, he said "Eric Byrnes." I should have been more specific. :wink:

    Did anyone else hear Jayson Stark on Mike & Mike this morning? They mentioned Dunn and Stark said the Reds demanded 2 ML players (pitcher & position player) and 2 Minor-leaguers (best pitching prospect & best position prospect) from teams calling about him. I am not trying to say that the source is wrong (I hope he isn't), but this package (Patterson, Hill, Mitre) wouldn't qualify as what Stark claims that the Red's want. One more thing from Stark - he said Dunn would love to play in Houston and if the trade between Houston and Cincy went down, he would have signed there long term. I'm worried that we're giving up 2 pitching prospects (esp Hill - a lefty with a great K rate) for a couple years of Dunn before he eventually signs with the Astros.

    I went into it with the same thought--Little League always had a system. Then I started paying attention on TV, and saw it in some ballparks. I'm actually having a hard time thinking of any MLB home teams that ARE on the 3B side. Maybe THAT'S been the problem for the last hundred years. Even in High School there wasn't uniformity, all the home dugouts were on the 3B side, except one. I think that team used the 1B side because the sun was directly in your eyes in the 3B side. As for other ML teams, I'm pretty sure the As are on the 3B side, as are the Twins, Indians, and the Chi Sox.

    According to the Cubs schedule on ESPN.com it's Prior, Wood, Maddux, Z, (I assume, though it's not listed, that Williams is still in the 5th spot). Sorry - Prior is facing Redman.

    He's saying some of the right things, but this quote (re his swing) scares me: I hope he's also working on pitch selection. A short swing at eye-level fastballs and low and outside sinkers isn't going to make him better. His shorter swing may allow him to hit those pitches, but he won't hit them w/ much authority.

I realize it has come up here many times, but recent reports suggested that Hendry wasn't interested in 2-month rentals. So I was wondering why this rumor showed up today on ESPN. Thought there might be a new development and wanted to see if anyone here knew anything.

    I'd rather have Dan than Preston at this point. I take that back, Dusty would probably put Dan behind the plate 4 times a week. I don't want either. Besides, we already met our quota of Wilsons for this year. We don't need any more.

    An Insider link on ESPN.com suggests that the Cubs (and Nats) are interested in Wilson. I thought this was dead. Anyone have any insight? Please tell me these rumors are false.

    I think we should all pitch in to get this guy tickets to all the Cubs remaining home games :P . I agree. In the interest of full disclosure - my last Cubs game was Father's Day '03 (which will change in August of this year). And 6 of those 8 games at Wrigley came in the late 80s/early 90s. But feel free to get me season tickets - I'd be happy to attend every game to help the team.

    Gonzo got so lucky that Bartman was there to take the fall. Speaking of which, I've always wondered... Do you like Gonzalez has his checks directly deposited into Bartman's account, or do you think he has to sign over each check individually?

    Dusty doesn't swing the bat or throw the ball...He is certainly deserving of his share of the blame, but how many two out runs have we given up in recent weeks or failed to come through with clutch hitting? You're right, he doesn't get all of the blame. But Dusty picks the guys that will swing the bat and throw the ball. Leaving Prior in there too long when he was getting knocked around in the 5th. Batting Perez 2nd. Using Macias as the first PH off the bench. Those are bad managerial decisions. It's more likely that players will get "clutch" hits when your best players are on the field, not Perez, Macias, etc.

Does anybody else get the distinct feeling that if Bobby Cox and Leo Mazzone were running the Cubs instead of the Braves, their records would be reversed? There's certainly no lack of talent on the Cubs' roster. I have to agree. Dusty is killing us.
