  1. in head to head, flukes don't consistently win, so I really don't see that this is true. In head to head, the four seed wins the entire league quite often. Not to mention the 2 and 3 seeds. I certainly agree that the final champion in H2H isn't always the best team. I have one fantasy hoops league now where I'm up about 10-12 games on the #2 team. But come playoff time, 1 bad week or injury to a key player and I might finish 2nd or even 4th. But for a league full of mostly new players, I fear a couple teams having a bad draft, getting way behind in roto and having no chance of catching up (then giving up). I think H2H gives teams a chance to recover quicker and still have a shot at the playoffs, where anything can happen.
  2. please please please don't let this turn into the Yankees "short hair and no facial hair" thing. It sounds like Lou was joking and I hope he was. What a ridiculous thing to fight with players about.
  3. I'll pass, I'd rather play roto. Sorry, but H2H clearly had more support. We kinda put the cart before the horse here.
  4. I'll send everyone a pm with the League ID & password. You'll need a Y! account, if you don't already have one. We still need to figure out what type of draft to have. Live online (where you can be there in person or just preset your rankings) or offline. I'm fine with either, though if we do live online, it could take a long time to draft 250 or so players. On the other hand, as anyone who has been following the other fantasy league draft on nsbb knows, if you do offline in baseball, you'll probably have a couple people pick a player that's already been taken. I'll see what the options are for live online drafts tomorrow. If we can do it online through Y! but over a few days rather than try to hammer it out in a few hours, that might be best. I can't see how it would take you more than 2, 2 1/2 hours at the absolute very most to pick your players in a 10 team league-just letting you know so that you have more information when trying to decide what type of draft to have. 10 teams of mostly new-to-fantasy-baseball guys? 2.5 hours? I've had fantasy hoops drafts of relatively experienced guys - 8 teams, 12 picks each last much longer than 2.5 hours.

  6. Yeah, WTF is up with that? Earlier this week it said it's open on Thursday, did it not? I'm opening up a league for myself and my friends and I could've sworn it said Thursday... those bastards. It did in fact. I even posted earlier here that I'd open the league today. Now I look like an idiot. Though it says on my Y! fantasy hoops page that they're doing some big upgrade tonight, so that might be part of the reason.
  7. Y! opens tomorrow, so I'll set up a H2H 5x5 league with a cap of 1350 on IP. The standard starters I listed above with 6 bench spots and 2 DL spots. Commissioner review of trades. If anyone is terribly upset about that, post here. We're forming a league backwards here (usually you set up the league and then look for teams to join), so it's going to be difficult for everyone to have exactly what they want.
  8. If not, there will probably be other leagues started by NSBB members. There usually are a number of them each year; you can keep an eye out in this forum for people posting about starting leagues. Nothing against TheGilesBros, but I agree - there will be a bunch of these popping up in the next few weeks. The difference between 10 and 12 teams is about 40-45 players. That's kind of a big difference in fantasy terms. With so many new people, I'd prefer to keep the league more shallow. But that's just my vote.
  9. 2 things - I would consider adding categories for the exact opposite reason. If you count AVG and Ks, Dunn is a pretty bad fantasy option. But if you throw in walks, weight XBHs more (2 pts for a double, 3 for a triple, 4 for a HR), and take out Ks - he's a great option. Rather than get into a category debate, I think 5x5 is better. As for max IP - esp in deep leagues, it's pretty easy to just rotate in a bunch of fringe pitchers to bump up Ws and Ks (and to a lesser extent saves). There's a risk that you'll drop someone of value or that by doing this, it'll hurt your ERA or WHIP, but in really deep leagues, those fringe pitchers are nearly interchangeable, so the difference in ERA/WHIP isn't significant - certainly not enough to outweigh the benefit of the extra Ks and Ws. It's not that big of a deal, but I don't think it's as uncommon as you make it out to be. Many if not most Y! public leagues cap IPs.
  10. Do spring training games count?
  11. One other thing - my pet peeve with public leagues is league review of trades. Reason being, if you agree to a trade, for example, on Sunday, the league gets 2 full days to review it (so the rest of Sunday, and all of Monday and Tuesday), it will go through on Wednesday, and the guy will show up on your roster on Thursday. It's not a huge deal, but with commissioner review, the trade can go through on the day it is agreed to and the player will be on your team the next day. I'm not looking for added power as commissioner. If a trade looks questionable, I can ask the league if they're opposed to it (either here or on the league page). I just hate waiting 4 days to get the benefit of a trade (it can be especially painful if you trade for a pitcher and he throws a gem for the other team while you're waiting to have him added to your team). Just a thought.
  12. 1. I really don't care on H2H v Roto. I've only done roto for baseball (and both for hoops). I find both fun for different reasons, but H2H might be easier for first-timers, I guess (easier to correct early-season mistakes). 2. 5x5 is fine with me too. 3. I'm going to suggest 6 bench spots and 2 DL spots and let other suggest something else if they prefer. 4. I prefer a max on IP (like 1350), but can be persuaded to leave it open. I think no max with a H2H league is a dangerous mix for a league with inexperienced players. Lack of experience frequently leads to a few people who are less active. That makes it easy for a few active managers to really take advantage of the few teams that don't pay as much attention. I've run into it a lot of public hoops leagues and it can be annoying to watch people dominate in the counting stats because they churn through marginal players. In addition, a deep bench makes it easier to add/drop guys because the guys at the end of your bench will likely be of marginal value. But I agree with cheapseats - if we decide on no max and a team has a bunch of injured or crappy pitchers, there should be no whining when they start burning through them.
  13. We have to work out a few issues. First and foremost - H2H or roto league? I suppose we should just vote on that. I assume this is a 5x5 league (5 categories for hitters, 5 for pitchers). Although in my only fantasy baseball experience, we used different categories to better reflect the true value of players (I'd have to look up which categories we included). Let me know what people want. The only other thing to decide is how many starters and bench spots each team gets. I think Y! standard is C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P. I don't know how many bench spots is typical, but in a 10-team league, I think we could easily carry 5-6 bench spots with 2 DL spots. If we can get these details worked out, we can figure out how/when we're going to do the draft.
  14. Should I set up the league in Y! now? EDIT: Note to self: look before you leap - we can set up the league in Y! on the 15th.
  15. my 2 cents - if we're going to do this, we should cap it at 10 (which means there'd be 1 more spot open, after CT Cubs Fan).
  16. To quote FJM - "Also, for the record: Bernie won a batting title. He was a very good hitter. Lots of years of OBP above .400. Lots of long at-bats. But his fielding was always overrated. In the four years he was awarded the Most Meaningless Award Anyone Cares About, the Gold Glove, he was a combined -11 FRAA. For his career he's -50." I wouldn't want Bernie anywhere near the Cubs at this point (unless he wants to be hitting coach).
  17. Done and done. Here's what we've got so far: Participants: MPrior Cheapseats Hawkcub BalsaWoodKeyBoard Karenmac Reggiemiller rules b_wiggy_66 How many should we aim for? 12? 15? I assume a league has to have a commissioner. And while I did start this thread, I really don't think I want to do it. If anyone has a hankering to do so, it's available for the taking. I'm all for doing it somewhere where it's free - so if yahoo's the only reasonable option, then yahoo it is. If anyone else knows of a better free one, I'm all for it. I've done fantasy baseball once, so I'd be interested. I've also been a commissioner for about 5 fantasy hoops leagues on Y!, so I'd be happy to be commissioner too. Unless someone else really wants it.
  18. Nope. Worse, actually. If you say so. I will give you the fact he was bad with the bat, but his defensive abilities and the way he called a game is one of the reason the cubs made the playoffs that year. I dont consider him to be that bad of a player. Rothschild calls the game. If this is true, why does everyone criticize Barrett's game-calling ability? Because everyone assumes that the C calls the game. I know this doesn't carry much weight, but I do remember reading at least one article in the last year or two that stated that Rothschild calls the pitches, not Barrett (or Miller, before him).
  19. No one's saying Dusty shouldn't be able to get another job. Just not as a manager.
  20. Maybe, but in a draft that's going to take 3 months to complete, what's another 4-5 hours?
  21. Ever fantasy mock drafted? Ever fantasy mock drafted....on weed? Ever fantasy mock drafted on weed...for a month straight? fixed
  22. I'm likewise confused by your original statement about being "second-hand." You seemed to imply that Law ranks the Yankees highly based on what the Yankees say about their own players. Is that really what you were saying?
  23. That's me. I'll review and get back to you.
  24. I hope so. Marion, Nash, and Dirk would be three very nice keepers! :D Your team is so freaking hard to beat. I ran the averages, I win in 3 categories and you destroy me in most of them. I need a few "shakeup" trades. IMB has one on the table... I do too (not even sure who to keep yet). My team is hard to beat when fully healthy, but it hasn't been there really all season. Those numbers are a little skewed with Lewis out. But I think we tied 4/4/1 the last time we played, so I'd like to come away with a victory this week... Wouldn't mind a big ticket trade myself, but having difficulty getting much of a response from many teams.
  25. I admit bias, but I don't think Jocketty should be #2. He has benefited from what is a frequently terrible division (3 straight WS appearances notwithstanding). Plus, Tatis and Vina count in his favor? I'd put Ryan 2 and Beane 3.
