  1. Went with September. But there's something about July, when the only major sport being played is baseball, that always makes me happy.
  2. This is all pointless nonsense. A good team could very easily plug in a player like him into LF. If he's an .800+OPS player, then sure - but he won't bat in a run producing spot until if & when he shows himself to be that kind of player. If he's hitting like he is now, they can do it only if they can absorb the offense elsewhere. LF is not where you put complementary players. Your post makes no sense. You're aware he OPS'd .809 last season and that even considering his poor start to this season, his ML career OPS is .811, right? So...if he were an .800+ OPS player (which he is) and shows himself to be that kind of player (which he has) he can play LF. I'm dizzy.
  3. Who here thinks that? I didn't say "here" I said "up here" - as in Michigan.
  4. Theriot is hitting .266/.330/.337. Color me unimpressed. Theriot has 39 more AB than Izturis, who was supposedly our starting SS coming out of ST. Riot is getting his playing time. I'd rather have Theriot in the lineup, at least he can drive in a run. Before last night's game Izturis was stuck at 5rbi for the longest time. 6 rbi total from your starting SS is totally unacceptable, even if you are Cesar Izturis. at the risk of sounding like I'm defending Cesar, that's a terrible way to measure a player's performance Agree. Neither player is particularly good. Izturis may have more downside, but Theriot has been pretty bad at times as well. Unfortunately, this is true. But Theriot has the "gritty" factor to fall back on. Not to mention a history in the minors of actually being able to find his way on base. It may not translate to the majors, but at least he has a chance of a decent OBP. Izturis is terrible.
  5. In the off-season, I was really hoping that if Jim was going to hire someone who seemed like a baseball traditionalist, he'd hire Trammel. He didn't get near the credit he deserved for what he went through in Detroit and how much he helped the young kids. It's annoying how many people up here think Trammel was terrible and Leyland deserves all the credit from turning the team from a 100-loss team into a WS contender. Ugh.
  6. And some bullpen arms. Ours aren't good, but these guys had Jose Mesa back there until recently.
  7. Yes, this. I'm jumping on this bus as well.
  8. The Cubs are babies if true. Nut up, and start playing baseball. If there's a dumber phrase than "nut up" I have yet to hear it. Is there any report that the Cubs players are actually complaining b/c Lou's mean or too hard on them or is that just what some here are assuming? Maybe the players just think Lou's an incompetent manager and that's frustrating them. Being frustrated with incompetent leadership is human nature. Doesn't make you baby. If you think your leader is doing a bad job of leading, you're supposed to sit quietly and smile while he drives you off the cliff?
  9. Is 28 (or, in 1 case, 31) considered old for AA-level play? [/sarcasm]
  10. That's what Pie, EPatt, and Soto are for. Z and Murton for Kemp and Billingsley Pie/Kemp and Gallagher for Teixeira EDIT: Soriano, EPatt/DeRosa, Lee, Tex, ARam, Pie, Soto, Theriot Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Marshall, Billingsley Would Texas really give up Teixeira for Gallagher and Kemp or Pie? If I were them, I don't think I would. I like Pie, Kemp, and Gallagher, but they'd be given up a lot of proven production for potential. And if Teix can play OF without killing himself, he's even more valuable.
  11. You want to trade Murton for a "lefty that can get people out in the bullpen"? Brilliant! What we need is more LHP in the bullpen. Why hasn't anyone thought of trading away a 25-year-old that put up an .800 OPS last season for another left handed reliever? Quick, get Hendry on the line. This idea has legs. We don't need OFs with a history of good OBP. What we need is to trade away a young, inexpensive player for what is essentially a crap shoot (middle relief).
  12. His facial hair is rather godly...
  13. Given that Barrett wasn't going to be playing today and Floyd is hurt, the only other player that should be in is Murton (who should definitely be in). But "brutal"? What were you expecting? Izutris?
  14. Is Murton injured? Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason JJ should be starting against a LHP.
  15. "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means" well played
  16. No, he doesn't. Not even close, really. Are we really arguing over a below average player and an even more below average player? You are very correct there. Not really. VORP/WARP in '06 Matt Murton: 16.2/4.5 Angel Pagan: -2.7/1.0 Murton sucks as an outfielder and can't drive in runs, what do miss about those facts? BTW, it is 2007 and Murton has done NOTHING. I love reading your posts. Like there's some innate ability to drive in runs that Murton wasn't blessed with. Unfortunately, neither was Lee. B/c in '05, he hit a bunch of HRs, but his RBIs sucked in relation. Must be b/c he can't drive in runs. [ignoring the fact that RBI is quite possibly the worst possible way to evaluate a hitter] And, in evaluating players, we should only focus on this year (even if it's only 100 or so ABs) and totally ignore history. B/c ballplayers never play like they did in the past. If a guy has a track record of good production and sucks to start the season (like ARam last year) - he sucks! It's not possible that a good hitter will eventually end up near his career #s.
  17. Where's "both stoned in the public square"
  18. For some reason, I read this as "scoffed" as if Renteria yelled "pansy" or something across the field at Francoeur for only getting a single against Eyre.
  19. Yeah, I was hoping playing Murton everyday was also going to be a part of the article. I disagree with trading him as well. But I think the point was, "if they aren't going to play him everyday". I say trade him if they aren't going to play him. Because the longer he stays as a part-time player, the more baseball will think of him as a part-time player, and bring down his value. But if you do trade him, don't do it for bullpen help. Well, there is no reason not to play him everyday this year. There's no reason he should be a part time player, just like there's no reason Theriot shouldn't be playing every day, Pie shouldn't be in CF everyday, etc. I don't disagree with the idea of trading him if you're not going to play him. I just don't think there's any reason not to play him. And I'm not attacking Bruce, I understood the point of the article. And if there was just no way Murton could start everyday b/c it would block some other important piece, I would fully agree with trading him (though, like others have said, not for relief pitching). But I see no reason why Soriano, Murton, and Pie couldn't start every game in the OF (except for the occasional day off).
  20. Yeah, I was hoping playing Murton everyday was also going to be a part of the article.
  21. I'm not disputing whether or not he was visibly drunk, but I wonder what the people who didn't come forward to be interviewed thought. I mean, if you were a regular at Shannon's and you thought the suit was BS, and it wasn't obvious that Hancock was plastered, wouldn't you come forward to tell the police that?
  22. I think that stat would work if you're comparing 2 guys in the same league, but the pitchers in the AL are also facing better offensive players. So, especially for the less than great pitchers, their numbers will be skewed by the quality of the offenses they're facing.
