  1. I'm talking a no risk pick up. After Garza's gone, there's going to be a rotation opening. If Villanueva is traded that makes two. I'd at least prefer giving Bosio a chance to work with Jurrjens than cycling through another round of Germanos, Berkens, and whomever else. Baker and Arrieta say hi. Also, that's exactly what Jurrjens is, another Germano type.
  2. Yeah, the top end potential and extensive time off for Soler has to be taken into account. Alcantra will end up at a bit more important defensive position at 2B, but Soler's power potential still has me sold. Plus I'm still a little leery of Alcantra's ability to continue switch hitting and who knows what hitting from the same side of the plate against all pitchers will do to him. It's not as far apart as prospect rankings will say though.
  3. Not only that, I think they're hitting better than the all time record for average with RISP. Assuming I searched correctly on B-R, it's 26 points better than any team in history has ever done. They're at .338 coming into today and the second best is the 1950 Red Sox at .312. That sounds like what I heard on the radio down here the other day. As poorly as they hit in the first month of the season, they've had that ridiculous RISP number from day 1.
  4. Shocking to see some Cardinal have uncalled for red ass over nothing.

  6. Outside of the passed ball last night where I think he got crossed up, Castillo's been doing a much better job of blocking balls and framing pitches lately.
  7. What are you talking about?
  8. Too bad it doesn't happen as often as it used to. He had a 3.6 fWAR last year and 32 HR... Right, but there's a lot fewer other hits sprinkled into the hot streaks and they don't last as long. .821 OPS as opposed to the .875-.900 he'd put up in his really good seasons.
  9. Yeah, I hadn't really put a number on it like that in my mind, but he's one of the few guys with power we have and the money is already spent. He's not blocking anybody, so unless you get somebody worthwhile back, there's no point in sending him off just to get rid of him.
  10. No [expletive]! 8 HR, 17 RBI and hitting .400 in the last 11. Too bad it doesn't happen as often as it used to.
  11. Maybe part of that broken past contributed to an inability to be allowed into Canada. More on Lang's broken past: http://www.idahostatesman.com/2013/07/08/2646581/lang-faces-a-different-struggle.html Maybe one of the two Treys don't have their passport. That was a problem for the great Mark Pawelek. Canada won't let you in if you have a DUI in (I think) the last 10 years, so that could certainly be a possibility.

Keep going, this could turn into something fun like the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor.
  13. I think this is ridiculous. He may well have been taken advantage of by Zell, but it certainly wasn't due to naivety. I'm much more inclined to believe it was due to the fact that he was the only one that wanted the Cubs badly enough to agree to the deal as it's structured. Isn't that naivety? Wouldn't you wait it out until he caved in to your terms, if you were the last true, willing bidder? No, I think that's blind love for a new shiny toy. I'm sure they knew exactly what they were getting into. They're financial guys for the love of god, they understand these things.
  14. Shut up England, he's Scottish!

  16. That would totally make sense if he'd hit the HR against Bartolo Colon.
  17. Guerrier's wind up reminds me a lot of the Weavers. Also, did we fix him? 2 days in a row of 1 2 3 innings (essentially, w/o the Barney error).
  18. So I tell my girlfriend this and mention that he's 19 yrs old. She's a nurse and immediately responds, sort of sheepishly, "So is he, um, you know?". I told her I have no idea if a Cubs outfield prospect is gay, but I was thoroughly amused that that was the immediate medical thought that came to her mind.
  19. Man, tough to blame Gregg for that when it wasn't even a strike. That's a hell of an AB.
  20. So is Blake Parker a thing or is this some sort of mirage?
  21. Is this some alias for Javy I'm not aware of? :-"
  22. i suppose it depends on your definition of "mastered," but he's 10th in ops and leading the league in home runs. and he's shown significant improvement in the past couple of months. i don't know that you leave a prospect at a level until he just completely destroys that level for half a year. he certainly seems like he's advanced enough that he won't get to AA and completely fall flat on his face. I mostly agree, and I'm aware of the tremendous strides he's made in the last month or two. I'd just like to see him do it at that level a little longer. It would suck if he went back to struggling worse than he did at the beginning of the year again so soon. I think that light switch moment of controlling his swing and the public statements to that effect make me feel more okay with this than I otherwise might. Here's hoping he adjusts to the new level quickly.
  23. Gameday is wrong. The last pitch was in the dirt.
