  1. He gave up a living, breathing human being for Andy Pratt. Andy Pratt. Andy... Pratt.
  2. A platoon is not a weakness. A platoon is a necessity to counteract the weakness of individual players. A platoon is how you make the most of a less than ideal situation. This is like saying "studying hard is a weakness" if a student doesn't just immediately absord everything he is taught. It is a wekness becuase a team is paying two guy to play one positon. So Z should pitch 162 complete games this year so the Cubs don't have to pay more than 1 pitcher? :-s In all seriousness, I'm confused as to what you think a bench is for, anyway.
  3. I'm going to go with "really not all that good." He had bad luck with balls in play last year, but even if his BABIP matched up better with his line drive percentage, we're talking about a .278 OBP instead of a .264.
  4. I thought he was who the Cubs should get for Maddux if they didn't get a prospect. Probably going to the Padres. :( http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=2384 Oh well.
  5. So what does everyone think about Lilly? Isn't he a bit of a mismatch for Wrigley, being a flyball pitcher and all? Maybe I'm not seeing it right. Should be an upgrade regardless, albeit an expensive one. As I look at his K numbers, I'm warming up to him a little bit. He was 17th in K/9 last year. He's #10 in flyball percentage, so yes, that might be a problem at Wrigley, but Zito and Schmidt actually give up more flyballs than Lilly.
  6. No, but none of the FA pitcher are worth what they will be paid. Plus his game is poorly suited to Wrigley. Meche, Jennings, Westbrook and Padilla are all better options. If Meche is the answer, I don't want to know the question.
  7. I'm really starting to think the Cubs are going to wind up with Ted Lilly. Lilly's agent and J.P. Ricciardi have both acknowledged that the Cubs are the frontrunners. Is Lilly worth $11 million per year?
  8. Right. Ideally a team would stack its lineup with guys who hit well against both lefties and righties, but that's almost impossible in reality. Also, I've seen a few posters mention that platooning is something that is only practiced by weaker teams or low-payroll teams, but that's far from the truth. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Blue Jays, for example, all used platoons at some point during 2006. The Yankees platooned Bernie Williams and Aaron Guiel before they got Abreu. The Red Sox platooned Trot Nixon. The Blue Jays platooned Reed Johnson and Frank Catalanotto before Johnson proved himself worthy of facing lefties and righties. The Jays also platooned Alex Rios and Eric Hinske for a while.
  9. I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet - maybe I've just missed it - but Will Carroll reported this morning that Ted Lily is asking for $11 million per.
  10. Or count on Murton to grow into a middle of the order bat in 2007. I wish that would happen, Tim, but I think it's unlikely. His GB/FB ratio was third highest in MLB last year. There are some pretty good hitters with high GB/FB ratios, but not many that would be middle-of-the-order hitters. Murton has good plate discipline, but he'd probably need to change his swing if he were called upon to hit with more power. I believe that he'll make that adjustment as he goes along. I hope so. And if he doesn't start hitting the ball in the air more, I hope the Cubs use him in a way to maximize his value.

  12. I'd love to see an upgrade at SS, too, but I want no part of Baldelli. I think Baldelli is going to decline dramatically this year, but even if he doesn't, he's one of Pie's top comparables in both PECOTA and FIPro.
  13. Good Lord, that sounds like no limit poker to me. This is reaching epic insanity proportions. I've got to think most other teams are pretty shocked at the Cubs' suddenly changed behavior this offseason. I know it's shocking the heck out of me. Again, I think this is further proof that the change at the "top" was more significant than initially thought. Not necessarily. Most insiders over the years have said it was the Tribune's board, not MacPhail, that instituted a strict salary limit. Hendry's spending, in my mind, is a sign that the Cubs will be sold in the near future.
  14. Ideally it'd be good to have some lefties in the lineup, but I'd rather just have the 8 best hitters. For example, I would much rather trade Jones than Murton , even though he's our only left-handed hitter right now. Jacque had a higher OPS in 2006 and his RC/27 was slightly higher than Murton's. Jacque also had a higher VORP rate. Murton was certainly a better value last year, but he wasn't clearly a better hitter than Jacque last year. Of course I don't expect Jacque to repeat his 2006 performance...
  15. Trivia: the Cubs had three players in the top 8 in groundball percentage last year. #3 Matt Murton #4 Jacque Jones #8 Mr. 4-3 himself, Juan Pierre Also in the top 50: Ronny Cedeno and Mark Derosa.
  16. I wish I'd been a fly on the wall for the battle of wits between Krivsky and Bowden. =D>
  17. They also allowed 5 sacks today. I'm in a fantasy league that gives 3 points per sack, and I went with Houston's defense today not because the Texans D is good (it isn't), but because the Raiders pass protection is so bad. Thank you, Oakland Raiders.
  18. http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/sp/getty/95/full.getty-71465436mh030_dallas_cowboy_7_55_41_pm.jpg Get a room.
  19. Politely disagree. He had terrible luck on balls in play in 2005, but he still ended up with pretty good numbers against right-handed pitchers. He'd make a nice platoon partner for Jacque. #-o [-(
  20. He was better offensively with the Padres than with the Cubs last year, so I assume you're not referring to his offense.

  22. Eh, they're 6th in yards per game, but that's not a very good way to measure a defense's effectiveness - even though the talking heads on the pregame shows do that all the time. One reason, like you said, that the Saints don't give up a ton of passing yards is that they're busy giving up a ton of rushing yards. More advanced metrics, that take strength of schedule and other factors into account, rank the Saints pass defense as 27th in the NFL. They're especially bad against #1 receivers. FO ranks them as last in the NFL. I won some fantasy football games today by starting Antonio Bryant. T.O. should have a field day next week.
  23. Remember a few months ago when that Reds fan was here posting that the Kearns/Lopez trade was going to push the Reds into the playoffs? Yeah, that was awesome.
