  1. Really? PECOTA projects Pie to be worth 2 wins more than Jones this year. PECOTA projections are atrocious when it comes to rookies. Example please? It pegged Ryan Howard to hit almost 60 HR last year, and I thought it was crazy, but he did it.

  3. I'm glad something good will come out of it.
  4. I'm afraid that Pie would almost exactly match what Jones brings with the bat - neither one of them hits lefties well at all.
  5. In any one game, no. But over the course of a season in which an ace could theoretically start 35-36 times if he goes every 5 days, regardless of off days, perhaps. Personally I'd rather see the Cubs keep Zambrano on normal rest early, but limit his pitch count early as well. I don't want them thinking 130 pitches would be fine since he's getting a little extra rest anyway. Which is what happened with Pedro Martinez when he was with the Red Sox in the early part of the decade. They would give him extra rest, but then they'd have him throw 130 pitches when he did start. They really blew it.
  6. In today's Under the Knife
  7. Agreed. 5th starters are 5th starters because they're not as good as the other starters. Earl Weaver famously said that's a lot easier to find four good pitchers than it is to find five. As for saving Z's arm for the end of the season, the research shows that the best way to do that is have him throw fewer pitches per start rather than give him fewer starts. There's absolutely no evidence that an extra day of rest has any long-term health benefit whatsoever. For those with BP subscriptions: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1596 There is statistical evidence that backs up that point. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1605 Not every pitcher has the same characteristics, and there are probably some pitchers who should get more than normal rest when possible - Pedro Martinez (all 170 pounds of him) for example. But Jazayerli's work shows that for the majority of starters there is no health benefit in getting an extra day's rest and, in fact, getting the extra day negatively impacts performance.
  8. I hated the Jacque signing, but I never thought he would be "absolute garbage." As far as Jacque being "above average," he was in the bottom 25% of qualified batters in OBP. and he had a .677 OPS against lefties. Predictions about his inability to get on base and his inability to hit lefties were spot on. I hope Marquis has an incredible season and the Cubs win the World Series, but I'd feel a lot better about the Cubs' chances if Marquis wasn't pitching every 5th day.
  9. Not necessarily true. See: Perez, Neifi. Even Neifi isn't all bad. It's how he's used. I was joking, actually. The Cubs would be lucky to get a season like Neifi's 2005 out of Cesar Izturis. Neifi was a decent option when Nomar went down. He shouldn't be a team's first option at short. But if you just look at the Cubs and just look at the last few years, there are plenty of examples of guys who were on the 25-man roster who shouldn't have been in the majors. Just because a guy is a big leaguer doesn't mean he deserves to be one.
  10. This is good to hear. I never liked skipping a starter. Maybe this will save some wear and tear on Zambrano in the early months. I disagree with you on that one, Vance. The research on the subject shows that an extra day off does little or nothing for the starting pitcher health-wise, but the day off does tend to have a negative effect on the pitcher's control.
  11. Not necessarily true. See: Perez, Neifi.
  12. Ray Durham is supposed to be hitting behind Bonds all year. Len and Plesac were talking about it earlier. I'm not even a Giants fan but that's good news. Batting Feliz any higher than 7th is crazy. But I guess 3rd basemen are supposed to hit in the middle of the order, dude.
  13. So they're talking like Feliz is going to hit behind Bonds all year. Is Dusty managing the Giants again? Feliz was about the 320th best hitter in baseball last year.
  14. I'd be into it.
  15. Wise old guy praises Pie for his break on the ball, even if he didn't get to it. Edit: So it sounds like Pie played it perfectly.
  16. Having a 14-year-old boy as your avatar is kinda creepy.
  17. One of many reasons that ERA shouldn't be the sole way to measure a pitcher's performance.
  18. CUT HIM! Yeah, Pierre could have done the same thing but in fewer pitches.
  19. http://www.noelheikkinen.com/noel/images/Kenny.gif They killed Kinney.
  20. Sucks for him, but it wasn't a given that he'd have a spot, anyway.
  21. The "official scoring" in ST is done by the home teams Director of Media Relations. So take all those box scores w/ a grain of salt. True, but the home team is San Diego, and the box score has the Padres with 2 errors-so there isn't any basis really for a bias to not give him an error-it at least says that it wasn't an easy play. The announce team agreed that it was a play that should have been made.
  22. If Pie split time with Jones, who would start against lefties? Pie is about as bad against lefties as Jones is. Pie's OPS was exactly 200 points higher against righties in Iowa last year. I'd rather have just about anybody than Pagan, though.
  23. Jerry Coleman: If you're a closer, you're going to have to be able to throw back-to-back games. An obvious point, of course, but it's worth noting that Ryan Dempster's performance in back-to-back games was horrible last year. By the metrics at Baseball Prospectus, he was the worst in the pen in such situations, worse than Howry, Ohman, Eyre, Novoa, Wuertz, and Aardsma. I still think Dempster has a lot of value against righties, but I'd rather not see him close again. Wuertz or Howry, please.
