  1. I don't think anyone could have predicted that Kelly Johnson would put up the numbers he's put up so far. No but everyone predicted he would have been better than Fontenot and Baker. Who is everyone? Kelly was horrible last year. ZiPS Chone Marcel Fans Bill James Kelly Johnson .824 .794 .777 .769 .799 Mike Fontenot .751 .726 .752 .714 .758
  2. Mark Derosa just hit an RBI double. Hahahahah! You're not seriously wishing they had DeRosa instead, right? Not really. This team isn't going to contend, anyway. It would have been nice to have him last year, though. That .250/.319/.433 line would have really made a difference. The Cubs got a good return for him. Those slash stats were obtained while playing for different teams in different ballparks against different pitchers. His stats with the Cubs might have been better or worse, but they wouldn't have been the same. No one in all of baseball liked the trade for the Cubs when it happened, and none of the guys the Cubs got are ranked in the organization's top 10 by BA. I'm not saying it's not smart to sell high, but trading Derosa for questionable prospects when the team looked like a playoff contender was dumb, especially since his replacement was Aaron Miles for $4.9 million.

  4. Bob sounds whiny because Doumit's catching isn't aesthetically pleasing to him.
  5. We needed to move him to the bullpen because we don't have any good relievers. Also, our bench is not so good, so I suggest we start Koyie and Chad so we have Geo and DLee available as pinch hitters.
  6. It's not like Nolasco has been anything special for the Marlins.
  7. He had to have been standing in foul territory to make it into the field level seats. He was standing by second base, IIRC.
  8. I once saw Pierre accidentally hit a young child in the head with an errant throw into the field level seats (while playing catch during batting practice). Not only was the kid not hurt, there wasn't any sign of a bump or a bruise.
  9. Has anyone noticed that Soriano hits homeruns only when the Cubs are way ahead or way behind?
  10. I like your fire and da passion FIRE! AND INTENSITY!
  11. Oh yeah, Bruce is definitely Bruce. I don't always agree with him, but I love it when he posts here. He's one of the few sportswriters I read.
  12. I heard Carrie posts here under a pseudonym. redivycub? Bruce Miles

  14. "When the wind's blowing out, you definitely don't want to run into outs on the bases." Also, you don't want to run into outs when the wind is blowing in or sideways.
  15. Len pisses me off. He's a smart guy, but he acts like he's not when he's on the air.
  16. Good point. I hadn't thought to associate the Diamondbacks with the immigration law in Arizona.
  17. I picked him up in a fantasy league just for today.
  18. This is really reductive, but: Because the last few days of performance tell us little, if anything, about how a player is going to perform today. A slump has to be pretty prolonged to have predictive value for the future. The same holds true with a hot streak. A team is better off giving its best players the most at-bats, even if those players didn't do well in the previous week or two. There's a chapter on this (I think) in Tango's The Book. It's worth a read.
  19. Sandberg and Brenly have the ability to be worse than Lou.
  20. 2007-2009 Tyler Clippard vs. Left-Handed Batters: .167 .265 .317 .582 vs. Right-Handed Batters: .269 .379 .532 .911
