Really? I don't know for a fact, but I thought Pie was much faster than pretty much anyone else except Soriano. I don't know that 1/100 of a second is going to make a difference in scoring, esp. with an unproven rookie. Pie is much faster, and a much better defender. It's a perfectly justifiable move. I'm all for the move for defense alone. Murton's speed is underrated. His infield hit percentage was 7.9%, 25th in all of MLB last year and tied with Chone Figgins. But yes, Pie is faster.

Agreed. The hitters need to practice their clutch hitting and the pitchers need to work on their approach in high leverage situations.

I doubt the Cubs would even consider it, but there's no reason he couldn't pitch an inning. There's a very good reason why he shouldn't. If it was routine for him to pitch in game action on his throw day, then I'd be fine with it. But throw days are not the same as game days. There's little to no benefit to screwing with his schedule. Throw days are different for different pitchers, but most throw at 95% or so for about 50 pitches. It was normal for starting pitchers to pitch an inning or two in relief in between starts (instead of a throw day) as recently as the 70's. Pettitte has done in twice this season, and a pitcher on one of those NL West teams (me and my east coast bias) has done it, too. I'd be all for making it routine - especially with veteran pitchers.

It can't be called I can't say I'm a fan of this rule, but then again, I can't really decide what I would think if the situation was reversed. I generally operate under the assumption that baseball doesn't need any new rules. That's not a result of any new rule, is it? In the past the home team always got to bat in the bottom of the inning if the visitors were winning before the game could be called, IIRC. From the sounds of things, in the past it would have reverted to the last full inning and the Cubs probably would have lost already. I definitely like the new rule. After the 5th inning, no runs should come off the board. Right. That's my understanding of the old rule.
