  1. NSBB.com or the Platte River Valley? I think some do overrated his defense, but it's much better than Pierre's and very good. I agree that he's better than Pierre, but I'm not sure about "very good." His range has always been spectacular. Defensive metrics that measure range (and nothing else) place him among the best CFers in baseball. Other metrics that take other factors into account, like Davenport's, for example, rank him as below average over his career. But I would never have traded Patterson for Pierre straight up. Instead, Hendry gave away Patterson for what will probably amount to nothing while giving up three pitchers for Pierre. I still can't believe we're paying Pierre more than we would have had to pay Patterson to be a worse player, and we had to give up several good prospects for the privilege to do so.
  2. So I'm watching the Cardinals/Astros game, and the Cards announcers just said that Hendry has already worked out an extension with Dusty Baker, but the Cubs are waiting for a good time to announce it to avoid a backlash of public criticism. I wasn't paying attention to the game until they started talking about Dusty, so I don't know if they were claiming inside information or just speculating. If true, the Cubs will go more than 100 years without a World Series championship.
  3. I just got back from the Iowa game. Rich Hill looked great. He didn't seem to be relying on his curve as much as he did during his stint in the big leagues, but that may be an incorrect perception on my part. Question: Why is Soto hitting behind Augie Ojeda?
  4. The odds of them making the playoffs are less than 1 in 400 and have been dropping, not rising. I love the Cubs, and that's why I'm rooting against them right now. They will be destined for medicority (or worse) as long as the current management is in place.
  5. The Cubs don't have a shot whether Clemens pitches or not.
  6. This isn't a team in a funk. This is a team that sucks and was built to suck.
  7. From Jim Baker's article in today's Baseball Prospectus:
  8. What problems did Roy Halladay have? Halladay completely lost his mechanics. Toronto sent him down to the minors to rebuild his mechanics from scratch. Afterwards, he became the dominant pitcher that he now is (when healthy).
  9. I'm going to agree with baseball7897 on this one. From todays' Under The Knife (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5133): Edit: I didn't realize Will Carroll's take on Prior had already been cited in this thread, but it's consistent with what Carroll has been writing about Prior for the last few days.
  10. Here's what we should really be worrying about: http://www.coolstandings.com/baseball_standings.asp?i=1 http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_odds.php According to the simulations at Cool Standings, the Cubs have no chance at the postseason. According to Baseball Prospectus's simulations, we have less than a 1 in 400 chance. It's time to worry about next year already.
  11. The ball took a bad hop and hit Walker pretty hard.
  12. I don't believe your implied assumption that it was Furcal OR Pierre. I believe it was Hendry's intention to acquire Furcal AND Pierre. I believe that's true. Hendry wanted both of them.
  13. I would guess that Ramon Hernandez is the passed ball leader. I know he had 7 errors going into today.
  14. 4.3% That's his batting average with RISP and 2 outs. 3.5% is the percentage of baserunners he's driven in (3 of 60). Either way is a very close approximation. I'll always defer to you on such things, Fred. Really.
  15. 4.3% That's his batting average with RISP and 2 outs. A lot of his hits are of the infield variety which most likely would not score Wood. I was taking Wood's underrated speed into account, figuring he could score from second on a high chopper.
  16. 4.3% That's his batting average with RISP and 2 outs.
  17. Question: Would the above scenario top losing a game on a 2-run sac fly? Or an infield fly bouncing off a defender's head?
  18. Thanks, scs. I'm pretty sure I'd like JC if I met him.
  19. And a higher SLG, too. Rickey had a career .820 OPS. Right now the highest OPS of a Cubs OF is .786. Rickey's 2003 > Pierre's 2006.
  20. Wood looks like the guy who buys beer for underaged girls. Just sayin.
  21. holy crap i was coming to post the same exact thing, except I don't think I was going to use a colon. Grammar counts.
  22. Really? http://www.stcloudstate.edu/upb/committees/images/Concert-Ludacris.jpg
  23. Nope. I'm in a surprisingly good mood. Maybe I should have put a  at the end of my post.
  24. While it's obvious that you're being sarcastic, there are some on this board who lack the ability to detect sarcasm. Initially, those people will respond harshly to your post. Then, embarassed that they didn't immediately recognize that you weren't serious, they will criticize you for not using a smiley to indicate your lack of sincerity. In coming days, you will be told that your "sarcasm act" is getting old. Eventually your loyalty to the Cubs will be questioned, probably by a poster who lacks grammatical skills and whose screenname is a combination of a rather generic word and a number. Finally, there will be a call for you to take an "absolute psychological test" to prove you can handle the pressures of posting despite your track record that shows you excel at such an activity. Be careful.
