  1. Ron Santo questioning the call for a sac bunt: "Ronny Cedeno is next and then the pitcher...I dunno...it's early in the game...I dunno."
  2. Ozzie has already said that Thome will play some games at 1B at NL parks.
  3. CF is the biggest problem, but the whole outfield needs to be addressed. Jacque has played more than 1000 major league games. He has never hit lefties, and, although he's had a few good at-bats against lefties this year, his overall numbers against lefties will continue to be very poor. Murton has a little more than 100 at-bats against lefties in his short career, and he has an OPS of more than 1.000. He doesn't fare as well against righties. I wouldn't mind seeing a Murton/Jones platoon if the Cubs were able to sign a bat for RF and someone who hits better than a pitcher for CF.
  4. Lots of intelligent Reds fans at http://www.redszone.com
  5. Dear Dusty: Maybe the guys who are only useful when they're bunting or hit-and-running should be at the bottom of the order or not playing at all.
  6. Today's Baseball Prospectus Stat of the Day lists the worst 5 offenses in the NL by VORP: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ The Cubs have scored about 10 runs more than you'd expect from a team full of replacement players. The next worst team is the Astros, but they're at 43 runs above replacement, more than 4 times what the Cubs have managed. Yes, we already knew that the offense was bad, but the gap between us and the rest of the league is pretty shocking. The Dodgers lead the NL with a team VORP of 125. Cincy and Milwaukee are 2 and 3.
  7. Not necessarily a jab at you, CubsBullsBears, but I remember when the Cubs' offense was power-heavy. They scored more runs then. "Balance" is a ridiculous group-think concept.
  8. It really is a good article. I couldn't help but think of the Cubs when I read it yesterday.
  9. I had a nice short meeting that allowed me to miss the last 2 innings. My meetings are usually on Mondays and Fridays. I've been known to take my laptop to departmental meetings and watch MLB.TV with the sound muted. Most of the time I have no problem keeping up with day games in my office.
  10. We did last year. I was at the game. Pandemonium.
  11. It's always nice to see Pierre make a throw. The Astros commentators called it a "loopy" throw to third.
  12. June 7, 2006: The day Eyre truly became a Cub.
  13. Which, of course, is a sign of fatigue. He needs to get out of the game ASAP. Injuries occur when pitchers get tired and lose their mechanics. C'mon Dusty.
  14. I'm really proud of him. Great game for Z. Now he needs to get pulled ASAP.
  15. we better have had enough offense for tonight. 8 runs is probably enough to win this game.
  16. If Big Z had hustled down the line, he might have saved us an out.
  17. Berkman made a nice play on what might have been a gapper. Not HR distance.
  18. and if he does give up a hit, he should be pulled immediately. but it's a nice thing to have to worry about.
  19. Lee doesn't want a rehab stint in the minors.
  20. In today's Under The Knife, Will Carroll suggested that Lee could be back as early as this time next week.
  21. Ever heard of Troy Percival? Mo Vaughn: http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0326/1358287.html
  22. Womack can't be any worse defensivley than Pierre in CF. Or when Macis played CF last year. What a joke that was. Actually, Womack can be, and is, worse than Pierre in CF. He was absolutely wretched in center for the Yankees last year.
  23. Rosenthal is bad, this article not withstanding. Yeah, I was actually surprised it was worth reading.
