  1. Ask him if a woman could have made that play.
  2. Baseball Prosepctus's Christina Kahrl has a free article on the trade: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5305 Her conculsion: "This is a rip-off for the ages--less humiliatingly bad than the infamous Jeff Bagwell-for-Larry Andersen deal, but not by that much." By the way, Kearns will be playing center for the time being in Washington. How nice would his offensive production look for a CF? Count me among those who would give Jacque Jones a shot in CF for the Cubs. BP's 2001 comments about Jacque: "He can play center field, so if he’s there, he’s valuable. He can’t hit left-handers, but as a platoon player, he can still be valuable. As a regular in left field, he’s as useful as a pet pig."
  3. Matt Murton projects to be better than Lane from 2007-2010 according to PECOTA. Why trade for a player inferior to what we already have?
  4. I agree, Bruce. The groupthink on this board is that the Trib spends enough money but doesn't spend it wisely, creating a false dilemma (spending wisely vs spending generously).
  5. So why would you be opposed to the trade? Ronny has been a below average defensive shortstop this year.
  6. It was a way of showing their support for Dusty.
  7. At some point a few years ago, someone at ESPN or Fox said Girardi was going to be a good manager, and everyone took it as gospel. I'd love to see some team hire a manager who never played the game on a professional level. Every manager in baesball does the same things because they were taught to do the same things. Inbreeding is bad.
  8. Unfortunately, I'll have to cross you off my list of those I'd like to replace Dusty, then.
  9. Some very reasonable people (Fred, for example) do believe in playing the hot hand, even if it's one of the all-time worst hitters in baseball, Neifi Perez. However, I believe you mistake contiguity for continuity. Perez vs lefties over the last 3 years: .291 .415 .706 Walker vs lefties over the last 3 years: .339 .441 .770 I don't care if Perez has done well in the recent past. He's still Neifi Perez. You can make the argument that it's not unreasonable to let Neifi hit, but you can't make the argument that "no manager worth his salt" would have pulled him for Walker.
  10. Brewers announcers are the worst ever. They speak in cliches but do so as if they're imparting some grand wisdom to their listeners, and when the Brewers beat the Cubs, one of the worst teams in baseball, they carry on as if they'd just won the world series.
  11. Followup question, then (not specifically for you): If Dusty's bad strategy is the problem, why do most of the posters here keep suggesting managers known for the same type of strategic blunders?
  12. I've been listening for 1 1/2 innings, and I'm already sick of the Brewers announce team. Why does everybody in baseball defend Dusty Baker? The only argument they every make is something like: Dusty didn't get thrown out at third. Dusty didn't blow that save. etc. If the manager doesn't make a difference, why are we paying ours $4 million a year?
  13. Getting rid of Carlos Lee would defeat their purpose for acquiring Maddux (i.e. a playoff run). Plus, if they were to get rid of Carlos Lee before the trading deadline, I would think the Yankees would be a better option to trade with since they desperately outfielders/hitting. Corey Hart is projected to be just as good as Lee next year, and he'll be much, much cheaper. As for the Yankees, being desperate doesn't make their farm system any better. There are only a couple of guys that the Yankees have that Milwaukee would want.
  14. Barrett out at 3B on a fielder's choice. Nice play by Berkman.
  15. Marshall has thrown 102 pitches. Hopefully Dusty does go to the pen in the 8th.
  16. We've only got 12 pitchers on the roster. If we had 13, maybe we could afford to bring in someone from the pen.
  17. Jeez who died and made you internet god? viewtopic.php?t=3669 I've already adblocked it.
  18. According to BP's NetDP statistic, Murton is #9 in all of baseball in hitting-into-DP ability.
  19. Ramirez may be slumping but he's still very dangerous. Yeah, but I'd still rather pitch to ARAM. And if they had the Cubs would not have scored. It's easy to say that in hindsight. Ramirez has a 1.455 OPS against Pettite, albeit in about a dozen at-bats.
