  1. Is that you, J.E.? Come on, guys. I thought that was funny. Maybe I'm too immature. :( Who's J.E.? http://static.flickr.com/24/59756144_8c5777e40f_o.jpg

  3. Is Angel Pagan hurt? Why isn't he starting?
  4. Trade him immediately. DLee for Tony Clark? Clark has a .921 OPS with RISP and 2 outs. It would be controversial, but hitting in clutch situations is the key to winning baseball games.
  5. DLee is just not clutch. :( His OPS with RISP and 2 outs: .176 Andy MacPhail is right.
  6. #3 hitter in the lineup sacrificing when down 2 runs with one out against a rookie pitcher who's already walked 5 guys? Cross Garner off the list of managers to replace Dusty. He was trying to bunt for a hit. He may have been successful if he had been blessed with Neifi-like speed. Not watching, just following along on MLB.com. Sorry... Many here aren't able to watch. That's why Fred's play-by-play is so appreciated.

  8. Hopefully it makes Sportscenter. Big Z should give him some pointers.
  9. I like your willingness to think outside the box but up-the-middle defense is incredibly important to a championship team, so Zambrano playing 2nd probably isn't a good idea. He might be good for a few more runs than Neifi on offense, but Neifi is a gold-glover and probably saved the Cubs from losing 25 or 26 games last year. You're either drunk or not conveying sarcasm well. Sorry. I need to use this  more often. I laughed out loud when Neifi got thrown out stealing second by a mile --- on a one-hop throw.
  10. Neifi could probably run faster if he could keep his hands away from his crotch for a few moments.
  11. Thank goodness. He should be a piece of the puzzle for next year.

  13. Random thought: Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui, and Gary Sheffield are all out of action, and the Yankees are still fielding a team that's arguably better than the Cubs (the combined OPS of their 1-8 hitters is higher than that of ours). 1) Jim Hendry should be fired because this is the team he put together. 2) Baker should be fired because these are the players he wanted. 3) Payroll does make a difference.
  14. If the Cubs are ever going to be a championship team, we need solid up-the-middle defense. If only we could clone Neifi and have him play 2B AND SS...
  15. The 2003 Florida Marlins were #23 out of 30 in defensive efficiency. The 1996 Yankees were #22 in defensive efficiency. Toronto was #18 out of 28 in 1993. Most teams that win the world series do have good defense, but to say that no team has won without a solid defense is incorrect. As for up-the-middle defense, the 2000 Yankees had Jose Vizcaino at 2nd. His fielding rate was 100, exactly the same as Todd Walker's rate this year. Derek Jeter was one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball that year. Bernie Williams was below average in CF.
  16. Unfortunately, scouts and statheads would both argue that 20-25 homers is an optomistic number. Scouts say they don't see any signs of him developing power, and PECOTA has Murton topping out at 14 HR.
  17. It only works after you reach 500 posts.
  18. Incorrect. He has been good for 2 wins above what would be expected of a replacement player, and WARP takes defense into account.
  19. 1) I don't believe that CF is intrinsically more difficult than RF, or at least I don't believe in CF>RF as a blanket statement. Jacque's range might offset his inaccurate arm a little more in CF than in RF. 2) By Davenport's fielding metric, he's just one run below average in RF this year, and his career rate is six runs above average. In 159 career games in CF, he's been quite good. One could cite the defensive metrics to show he's better suited for CF than RF. I'll still agree with the BP analysis: he's an asset if he's playing CF or if he platoons in RF.
  20. If they get a good offer for him, they'd be stupid not to trade him. His pitching has added about one win over a replacement level pitcher this year, and that's the same level of performance that PECOTA expects through 2010. I'd rather see the Cubs go the Zambrano/Liriano route with middle relief; bring up promising minor league starters, and give them regular work out of the bullpen. Note to Hendry/Dusty: this won't work too well with 7 men in the bullpen.
  21. Not like it matters...I'm more ticked about X-NAD and the spiking at second going unretaliated. If Carlos Lee didn't get thrown at last year, Nads isn't going to get plunked, either.
