  1. For the record, I think it's cute that people are still arguing the "best" team. Sports are not designed to determine the "best" team, they are designed to determine a champion. Big difference.
  2. I'll go ahead and beat that poor, dead horse: We need a playoff to correct this stuff. A playoff will crown the one of the best two teams national champion less than the current system. So? Then we're replacing one system that usually crowns one of the top three teams in the country as national champion with a system that usually crowns one of the worst 117 teams in the country as national champion. The sheer absurdity of this statement is enjoyable enough, but I'd love to hear your logic behind this.
  3. So the only time a Big Ten school doesn't play for a championship is when the conference is down? Heck, a Big Ten school has played for the championship the last two years out of a down conference. I realize that this is primarily a USC argument, and I'm not saying I disagree with SSR, but the last point I would want to make is that USC is beating the brains out of the conference's 2nd best team when the "best" team is getting beaten in a fashion that proves they don't belong in a title game at all.

  5. Man, Stephen Garcia blows.
  6. You were looking for positives on Chaney earlier, and though I'm not sure I can sell him as a great hire, I like him on this staff. He's a pretty good recruiter (did pretty well as RC at Purdue- not an extremely easy school to recruit to, imo), and while he's not a stellar play caller, he won't have that responsibility in Knoxville. I think he's a fine addition to the staff, and I'd like to see what he'll do with the OL or TE's (whichever he coaches.) I'm still hearing Jimmy Lake, though Monte is going to coach DB's as I understand it, and I'm hearing that Ken Norton Jr will be in Knoxville tomorrow to talk about the LB's position. Steve Gonzalez's name simply won't go away either, regardless of how much Urban keeps denying the whispers. Lane appears to be delivering on his promise of a great staff. Not sure what will happen with Gran and if he'll be hired to replace Drayton or if we'll keep Drayton, but we'll likely know that answer in the next few days. I hope we keep Drayton, because there are rumblings out there that Oku is on the verge of decommitting and choosing Oklahoma State. Take that with a grain of salt, though, as it's a Rivals Mainboard rumor.
  7. good to see that lsu narrowed the gap to just 18 slots by beating tech by 5 touchdowns. Almost as good as the ACC widening the gap on the SEC by losing two Bowl games to SEC teams. Nothing says "our conference is better" like losing twice to the same conference in one day.
  8. This is all very discouraging news. I'm hoping more than ever that Lane calls his own plays. Heard this on the radio this morning and was hoping it wasn't true. Disregard the Orgeron info. He's a Vol. Lane Chaney Reaves Kregg Drayton (?) Kiffin Orgeron Lake(?) It's taking shape.
  9. Thank you. If you go to Mackey you can probably say that to them in person because they are likely shooting free throws right now. yeah, because the refs are still calling fouls on the illini. The game was called fairly. not really. Eh, there were some questionable calls both ways. The only really bad call was the foul at the end of regulation on Davis. Typical B10 game other than that. i was just making a comment on how many more free throws purdue shot than the illini. the fouls looked even at the end because of the 7 fouls purdue had in the ot period. plus, purdue didn't lose the game, they were beaten. Just because one team shoots 10-15 more free throws doesn't mean the reffing was bad. Watch the game with open eyes and you will see the game was reffed well. Purdue shot more free throws because they had their guards driving a lot and JaJuan was getting great position. Ilinois was getting open jump shots from 10-15 feet out all game. Those are great scoring opportunities but you won't get a lot of free throws with jump shots. Off topic, but did you see my question at the end of the Bowl Discussion thread? I need some Boilermaker opinions.
  10. =D> Holy crap, it turns out this team is good enough to compete at a high level. After that Missouri State loss, I was thinking they wouldn't be there this year, but it turns out that they're already a completely different team. Hey rivals.com! Do you see my boy Washington? Think he can get in your top 25 now?! If things continue like they're going right now, 5-10 not withstanding, the Hogs are only going to get 1 year of Courtney Fortson. I still don't understand Pearl turning him down. Real head scratcher.
  11. Tennessee will likely name Jim Chaney Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach in the next few days. Yo, Purdue peeps... what's the good word on Chaney? In his 4 years as recruiting coordinator at Purdue, they finished int he Top 10 in Rivals recruting rankings every year. Any other insight on him?
  12. Ed Orgeron to LSU is nearly done, according to LSU's Rivals site. If both he and Chavis sign their reported contracts, O (the DL coach) will make more than Chavis (the D Coordinator).
  13. Tennessee's upcoming visit to Lawrence this weekend got much tougher tonight when Center Wayne Chism goes down with an apparent head/neck injury. The junior post is Tennessee's best interior presence, and is a solid defender int he paint. If he's out Saturday, it's going to be tough for Tennessee to go into the Phogg and pull out a win.
  14. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/minorleagues/prospects/y2009/ Shark is the only Cub in it. No surprise at 1, though I will be interested to see BP's list when it arrives for comparison's sake.
  15. No problem. I think (and mooch or Tim will probably have to answer this definitively) you cannot have more than 33 players, and I think they have to be designated correctly (ie, up to 23 Major leaguers and up to 10 Minor Leaguers). If that's the case, you cannot trade Furcal or Wells for players, and ou cannot trade your points for players either. It's entirely possible that I am wrong though, so check with one of them.
  16. PLease tell me you heard Tebow's interview with Mel Kiper? My goodness, it was so funny. Kiper suggested that he would be a great Frank Wycheck type in the NFL... HBack. Tebow handled it well, to his credit, by asking what he needed to do to be seen as a QB and not just a "playmaker" at the next level. But, Kiper basically told him that he was not an NFL QB, but instead more of a FB/TE/HBack. It was priceless.
  17. Is it an SEC crew?
  18. If you watched it last night, you wouldn't have even had to ask that question. Can't ask questions after you hang yourself. What does that mean? It's what I'd do after being forced to watch Big Bang Theory. Gotcha. Different strokes, I guess.
  19. Disassociated Tennessee booster Roy Adams (who is still supremely connected) reporting that Orgeron to Tennessee is a done deal. Still also hearing that Trooper Taylor is a possibility to rejoin the staff, as well. If all this plays out, Kiffin has built an unbelievable recruiting staff.
  20. Tennessee is in a good game with Marquette right now. Tennessee is doing a good job of keeping the ball out of the paint, where Marquette apparently wants to take the ball, though early on, half-court defense was killing Tennessee. So far, that and perimeter shooting have been UT's achilles heels. And Tennessee really misses JP Prince. If he doesn't get healthy soon, they will lose at least two more games that they should not, a la Temple.

  23. Singled out. Is that better? Oh, and way to refute the points. Another person incapable of addressing the point at hand. How fitting. Either way, claiming to be singled out/targeted is rings awfully hollow considering the condescending responses you've dealt out in this thread("you Sabermetricians- who famously ignore any part of the game that cannot be quantified by some obscure methodology and formula"..."Another person incapable of addressing the point at hand. How fitting." among other incredulous rhetoricals making insinuations about the poster rather than the topic at hand), with none given by me in return. People arguing the other side of your posts doesn't mean you're being singled out, and if you're the angriest voice(why that is, I'm not sure) among those from that viewpoint, then you're the one that's going to get responded to. Who's angry? And you can cut the boy scout routine. You claim to have not responded to my "incredulous rhetorical" and "insinuations" in kind, yet admit to responding initially because mine was the "angriest voice". How is that constructive in the least? But I digress. Let's stick to the point. I've made mine that the OP's assessment that Gathright is a better acquisition than Abreu, even at the opposing salary, is terrible. I'm still awaiting a decent response as to why that makes any sense at all.
