Barry Bonds is hitting the snot out of the baseball
NewUserName replied to TB_11's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
Wow      maybe his crazy Christian beliefs help him in times like when his son has passed away. I know Chritianity isnt very popular here, but the ends seems a lot better than lets say nothing. -
Stoney says Lou is the best manager the Cubs have ever had..
NewUserName replied to moorecg's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
I predict Lou will be gone after next season with no playoffs. Which might still put him in the best manager we ever had race. -
So is this the worse outfield defense in Baseball history or was it Mathews in left Jerry Mumphrey in center and Keith Moreland in right back in 86? So Murton is 2 for 2 against tonights starting pitcher with a homer and is still on the bench. Even after Cliff looked pretty bad yesterday. So what is the point of keeping Pie on the team if he isnt going to improve our CF defense? So are we really sure that Lou is better than Dusty?

I thought The 2 kids and a goat line was Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Hull? I think it was in 02-03. The year they won the Stanley Cup I think it was someone else besides Zetterburg as jaydee had pointed out. I looked up Zetterburgs career numbers and his rookie season was 02-03. So it had to be someone else in 01-02.

How did the Cubs do in 1 runs games last year? I remember it not being very good or was that in 2005?

Murton getting benched again for lesser player
NewUserName replied to RegulusBlue's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
Why is this all a how Murton is performing thing. Truth be told Floyd has not exactly been doing great since his hot start either. -
It is truly amazing how far statistical analysis has come in the last 25 years.

Also I am pretty sure Floyds HR was a pinchhit or late inning sub shot. -
I think you are right about Zetterburg. Sorry I was probably wrong. I remember them making a big deal after the Stanley Cup about adding him to the team the next year. I can't remember who else was on the 2 kids and a goat line then. Maybe Boyd Deveroix. I will look it up. This is the first year that it has really been Zetterburg, Datsyuk and Lidstrom leading the team. Yzerman, Shanahan and Lidstrom have been the leaders in the last few years. I still think Chelios probably has a lot of pull also. I will still say that most of the criticism for this years team sounds more like Barry Melrose than people who have objectively watched them. Most of there games have been announced by either CBC(with an obvious Canadian slant) or NBC(with Ed Olcycz being obviously anti-Red Wings). Truthfully I didnt get to watch a lot of Anehiem. The only thing that I see that Dallas, San Jose or Vancouver are doing better than the Wings is maybe goaltending.

Yes The Highest seed always plays the lower seed in the NHL To answer Littleburr without quoting all of it. I will go back to the fact that the Wings have won 3 Stanley Cups in the last 10 years. They still have more Stanley Cup winners on their team than any other team left in the playoffs. They have gone a little younger and grittier then in the past. Since they are winning most of the face-offs and a majority of battles in the corners and most loose pucks, I dont understand why you say they are coasting. They really dominated the series overall. the group of zetterberg/datsyuk has not won a stanley cup. i dont see how what a team did 10 years ago matters. the wings were totally different even 5 years ago. Zetterburg and Datsyuk were on the 2nd line of their last Stanley Cup team. "2 kids and the goat" with Brett Hull. They were matched up with Iginla's line most of this series and would have to say came out the better. I wish they didnt have Holmstrom on their line even strength. Players on their team from last Stanley Cup victory. Holmstrom, Zetterburg, Datsyuk, Draper, Maltby, Chelios, Lidstrom, and Hasek(obviously left and came back). Several of these guys were on their first one ten years ago They have gotten bigger, faster and grittier with the players like Cleary, Franzen, Lebda, Samuelsson and Fillpula. Bertuzzi played well the last 3 games against Calgary even though it is obvious that the refs will not give him any kind of call. Even Lang who is lazy and doesnt have any intensity played well. I just dont understand the critism this year. I agree the last couple of years about lack of intensity, speed and grit. They also ran into a hot(and soon to have his equipment put back to normal standards) goalie against Anehiem in 03. Calgary was a much faster and grittier team in 04. Edmonton also got hot last year and were a much faster team. Also all 3 of these teams made the Stanley Cup finals. So its not like the Wings lost to some teams that were rags. This year though the Wings have controlled the puck, finished their checks, won battles in corners, won battles in front of net and gotten to majority of loose pucks. I think their goaltending still may be an issue. Their power play has been weak also which will haunt them if that continues. I just dont think besides goaltending there is a team out West that is better.

link Charles Finley was always trying to be like the Yankees when he had the team in KC. They were widely considered the Yankees farm system because the Yankees would trade them old has beens for good young players. Roger Maris being an example. Anyway Finley wanted to make the dimensions of the park in KC to be the same as Yankee stadium. Which was shorter than 300 ft down the RF line at the time. MLB would not allow it. They had some rule that said new dimensions couldnt be that short. Yankee stadium got away with it because they were Grandfathered in. So Finley put a line on the field to show were the dimensions of Yankee Stadium were. He then told his PA guy to anounce any ball hit over that line would be a HR in Yankee Stadium. So after the Twins hit 4 straight homers the next guy hit one to the warning track in RF. The PA goes "and that would have been a HR in Yankee Stadium" That was the end of those announcements.

I didnt hear too many Cub fans complaining about some of the A holes on the Cubs in 2003. -

I can tell you right now that the Wings are going to be eliminated if they get to the Ducks. The Wings have never been a playoff team, their hearts aren't in it. You all see the Ducks, Wild, Canucks, and Stars playing their butts off, but when you watch the Wings games, they play like it's reg. season. And seeing as there were NO Wings to back up Franzen is just another observation of how much this team lacks. Dumb post. 3 Stanley Cups in the last 10 years? Also right after McClelons goon play both a referee and a linesman grabbed him and took him in the corner. The Flames were pretty much just being goons after they got down 3-0 and the Red Wings were smart not to get mixed up in it. As for interfering with the goalie, Calgary is just as much to blame for their goalie getting interfered with as the Red Wings are instigating it. The Wings have outplayed Calgary for most of this series, dominating them at home and playing even at Calgary. Even in yesterdays game were the refs called a pretty one-sided game, The Wings were hitting and getting most of the loose pucks. I hope they play Anehiem, but they probably wont beat Van or San Jose. As a matter of fact I think Calgarty would probably beat Anehiem and their imaginary toughness also. Its nice to see that some people get most of their hockey knowledge from Barry Melrose though. Maybe that will at least keep some highlights on Sportscenter. Did I try defending McLennan? If so, please tell me where I did. Yes the Flames were gooning it up, and I applaud them for doing so. But the Red Wings are still playing like it's reg season, and the Flames have yet to step it up. Their two home games obviously did not get them prepared. The Stanley Cup Playoffs bring on a whole new level of intesnity to the game, and neither the Flames nor Red Wings have that passion. The Red Wings need to realize it's a whole new level of play now, and defending their player is pretty important. While the Flames were blatantly gooning it, you protect your teammates. The Red Wings are gone by the end of the 2nd round, I guarantee it. And I laugh quite a bit at the Melrose remark, I don't recall mentioning Gretzky. Your whole post sounded just like a Melrose commentary and still does. I didnt say that you were defending McClelon, I was saying why there was noone on the Red Wings jumped in on him. There was actually no Red Wing even close to the play. Several other times when Iginula was gooning it up on Zetterburg and Lidstrom the Red Wings players stepped in pretty quick. The Wings have played pretty well this series. Really dominated most of the first 3 periods tonight. Kiprusov is making this a series. The Red Wings main problem the last 3 years has been lack of speed. This team is quite a bit faster than the teams of those years. As much as it hurts to say it was time for Yzerman to retire and to let guys like Shanahan go. The only teams that may beat the Wings are Dallas or Vancouver. This is because of their goaltending. I still think Calgary could beat them too but mainly for the same reason.

Except Des Moines on Monday. I have a bad feeling you are right about this. Didn't you watch the 10th inning? Murton is going to be the CF from here on out. :^o Yeah!!!! When the Cubs start making roster moves I usually think what would make the least amount of sense. Like sending down Guzman the other day. What move would make the least amount of sense now? You think sending down Guzman so he could replace Miller made the least amount of sense? If thats the goal great!!! I have seen that posted here quite abit but haven't heard anything from the Cubs thats what they are going to do.

Now, that's comedy. Except that both a quite a bit older than Sandberg was in 84. In 82 and 83 noone saw anything in Sandberg that would have made you think he was going to develop into the player that he became. He however was given an opportunity to play and develop, which seems to have become out of reach of most Cubs management and 3/4 of fans. Murton was probably a better hitter last year than Sandberg was in 82. Sandberg was not a top prospect either.

It sure sounds like they want him too stay. This would really put Floyd in a bad spot unless he can play RF. I think having him play RF would only negate any positive having Pie play CF would have. I have a feeling that Pie is going down until a trade can be made.

I have been reading this board a long time. That being said, this is probably one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever read here. Actually, here or on any of many other baseball boards I read. Yeah I really didnt want to even respond to this comment. I don't live in the Chicago area so I really dont know if there is a lot of racism in the South side and suburbs. I think most Sox fans just equate Sammy to the Cubs and hate him because of their Cub envy.

Lou started Theriot 1 game at SS in ST, and I don't think he played another inning there after that game. He does seem very unwilling to put Theriot at SS, considering that Theriot has spent time at 4 other positions and no time at SS, even in situations where it would have made more sense to put him in there (for example, in one game somebody pinch-hit for Izturis, and instead of Theriot switching to SS they took out another player to put Cedeno in). So until I see any other indications to the contrary, I'm not even considering Theriot at SS as something that management would do, no matter how much of an upgrade he might be. Unless Theriot will be allowed to play SS than I dont think Cedeno will be leaving this team. Funny how Cedeno won the spot over Tomas Perez who didnt play much SS either.

Watching Craig Wilson play for Atlanta I was wondering why the Cubs made no move to get him while bringing in Floyd and Ward. I know Wilson is off to a poor start but he can play all OF positions and 1b and bats RHed. Seems to be a lot better fit than Ward.
-
Is it just me or does Piniella not seem to want to put Theriot at SS? With our offense struggling we will put any haphazard outfield combo out there but not Theriot at SS. Is he worse at SS than I have seen in his limited appearances there in the past? I agree Cedeno needs to go down and I have wondered for several years why Fontenot has not been given a chance. He certainly couldnt be any worse than the revolving mess we had at 2nd base last year.
