    This gets quoted a million times with no proof or evidence. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=3766 http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/constructing-lineups/ if you read that of bp you'll notice that power hitters should not lead off :idea: Case in point: Sori should bat fifth with Riot leading off. Even with that the difference wasnt too extreme. If you factor in that for his career Soriano has hit significantly better as a Lead-off man than down lower in the order. That probably will equal out any difference of where he hits. Maybe a better solution is to bat Kendall 9th. :wink:

    I dont think that the A's or the Twins have a lot higher payrolls than KC. These 2 teams have proven you can be competitive on the field without being competitive in payroll. The Royals also had a great following in the 70s and 80s. It is not inconceivable for them to build themselves to a midmarket team.

    I don't ever recall getting the sense that people here believed Jones was 'done'. They just thought he wasn't worth the money. One major difference between the two is that our GM didn't trade one of our best hitters for a below-average leadoff hitter and trumpet it as a smart move. Well, argue about chemistry all you want, but the year after that trade the White Sox won the World Series. If Jim Hendry could make a trade like that, even if for a worse player, would you really argue? It freed up money to get Contreras and OHernandez. Those 2 guys had career years as did Podsednik. What Sox fans are doing in their revisionist history is saying that Podsednik gave them a better chance to win than CLee without bringing up the money savings. Which is just plain stupid. Of course most Sox fans think Erstad is a good player when healthy.

    I really think the "Russell Martin booble head taking a poop doll" was the funniest. He really looked like he was taking a poop. Than one of the guys says like he has been hitting lately.

    Again, those are the same guys that couldn't win the last 2 years (3rd place in 06, last this year). As for their big 3 being over a .900 OPS next year, sure it's possible, but I wouldn't say "very conceivable". None of them are at .900 this year. Dye has only been that high twice in his career, and will be 34 next year. Thome is at .899 this year, but will be 37 next week, and at this point in his career is a health risk. Konerko has also been barely over .900 twice in his career, and will be 32 next year. Not to mention, they play in the same division as the Twins, Tigers, and Indians. I think 3 of Sheff, Maggs, Granderson, Guillen (all at .880 OPS or higher), and Sizemore, Hafner, VMart, and even Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer are more likely to be better offensively than the Sox big 3. All have the young pitching to be potentially miles better than the Sox. I cant disagree with your post. I just think the ifs for the White Sox arent completely out of the question. What I find a little discouraging is this. I am not sure the Cubs are better than the Sox. Certainly not better by a large margin.

    I dont think the White Sox are as far from competing as some here think. Starting pitching staff is pretty good. I dont know what they are going to do in center and left but it is very conceivable that Dye, Konerko and Thome all have .9-1 OPS next year. Fields is just as good as Crede. If somehow they get some production from left and center and their bullpen tightens up and Detroit and Cleveland dont get better, well they have a chance. If not they have a lot of good trade bait come next August if Williams doesnt ask for too much.

    i wouldn't either. Maybin could be Soriano at a very cheap price for the next few years. I wonder how Dombrowski meant that. Did he mean it as a comparison? That Maybin will actually be better than Soriano over the next couple seasons? Or that factoring in age and cost, that Maybin is a better value? I think Maybin will be pretty good hitter and Gold Glove caliber CFer. I would trade Soriano to get him, in a heart beat. Probably wont be as good as Soriano the next couple of seasons though. I was talking to my Dad who is a Tiger fan this morning and he is pretty happy with Maybin being called up. I mentioned him being rushed into a pennant chase. He didnt seem to mind. He mentioned Miguel Cabrera in 03. He also doesnt think the Tigers are going to win the WS this year and Maybin will probably start next season so why not get him started.

    Given his workloads at an early age I respectfully disagree. Young pitchers with heavy workloads start to run in to problems around his age. The contract would actually be less of a gamble if he were 28. That said, youneverknow. Yeah but what were the Cubs options? Hoping that Hill, Gallagher or Veal turn into an ace next year. I think the Cubs have a couple of year window to win a WS. It would be a stretch to come up with a plan to improve the team in the next couple of years if Z wasnt resigned.

    I agree. I dont believe that this will hurt his development though. I just dont think he is going to be very effective and will start next season in AAA. If they get Wilson are they going to move Sheffield to Left and DH Casey and Thames and put Guillen at first.

    I didnt read all four pages so I may be saying things that are already said. I am not certain about this but our payroll is pretty close to being max-out for next season is my guess. We are not a top 10 team in baseball now. We dont have any players in our system that are going to dramatically improve the team over the next couple of years. So basically Hendry has built his 2nd mediore team. I dont see many ways to improve on this team in the next couple of years. So I am not going to throw flowers at Hendry just yet. If our payroll increases and we add another bat this offseason and Hill becomes a quality number 2 pitcher and everyone else stays at their level than yes.

    Why isn't Bruce up, since he has put up better numbers at a higher level? it's not like they play for the same team. No I know, it just seems like the Tigers are making a mistake pulling this kid up way to soon. Leyland and Drombowski seem to have no problem letting youngsters get a chance.

    I saw Maybin a couple of times last year with Western Michigan. He was clearly the stud of the league. Not just as a hitter but he was a great CFer. Strange they are bringing him up now.

    What are the other options? What are the other free agent pitchers this coming off season? No matter what anyone thinks of Z, not signing him would leave a large hole in our rotation. No matter what any thinks of Z, someone is going to pay him Zito money or more. Are we willing to let him go because the money is too much? If so what are the other options? Personally I would resign him. I think he will give the Cubs a chance to match any offer. He is still young and has proven to be a major inning eater. If the Cubs dont resign him than we should trade Lee, Aram, Soriano, Lilly, Marquis and any other valuable players and just go with a major youth movement. edit: just seen he has been resigned. scratch what I have said.

    I expect Michigan St to be in the Top 25 after a couple of weeks, so I wont need them mentioned in the games of interest after that. However just in case they are not you might want to keep them in your games of interest list.

    I've heard what MJ&H do, so I'm not clicking that link. There is nothing "great" about any of them I think they are a pretty good show. Easily one of the best in Chicago sports radio. Song parodies however are not there strength. This one was done by their producer I think though.

    I think if Papplebon or Rivera were doing this, ESPN would be breaking in to show all of there outings. Not even the main story in the Sox/Mariners highlight the other day.

    Far to small a sample size for that stat. I'm not saying ba w/risp is useless but a measly 19 ab's is a bad way too judge. Most players for their careers do not have much of a difference between hitting with runners in scoring postition and regular hitting. There are exceptions but usually not drastic. So if there is a deviance from career norms it is usually a sample size thing.

So I would contend the Cubs cannot afford to not let him play. So why did jimbo spend all of that money on the likes of Soriano, Lilly, and Derosa while all along the answer was right in front of his face. 99 years of futility, and all we needed was Felix Pie. May as well trade Ramirez and Lee and let Zambrno go o the Yanks, because it's all about Pie. I havent been around too much lately but I see you have made a lot of friends. By the way I clarified my position in another post. I am not delusional enough to think that Pie is going to be the savior of the team. Also your avatar pretty much explains your ability for rational intelligent thought. So As Vance's sign idicates I am done feeding the troll

So I would contend the Cubs cannot afford to not let him play. i'm all for pie getting his PT, but thats a bit far fetched to say that we can't win WITHOUT him. My point is that the Cubs are not an elite team. Since the Cubs are probably not going to be able to add a free agent CFer this offseason, one way the Cubs can improve and become an elite team is for players like Pie, Soto and Murton to become quality everday players. Probably the only way that is going to happen at this point is to just let them play. Yes it may cost the team a playoff spot this year but may really improve them in the future. I would be much more in favor of taking that risk than hoping we can have a fluke playoff run like the Cardinals did last year.

    Harsh tone, but pretty much true. Maybe he is a announcer and needs meaningless stats to fill airtime.

    Using this logic the Cubs should have signed a better player then. I mean truthfully Manny Ramirez was available a couple of years ago and his contract would be less damaging longterm than Soriano's is going to be and he is A LOT better than Soriano.
