  1. K-Town - No need to throw in incendiary comments with the objective of riling up an entire team's fan base.
  2. Yes it's very early and hindsight is 20 - 20 but do you think considering their 2006 contributions so far (Prior - DL, Tejada - .453/.600/1053 and Bedard 4 - 0 with 2.77 E.R.A), anyone in Orioles Management has been muttering that tired old cliche "Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make"?
  3. I just found Burrell's article interesting and ironic given all the abuse Wrigley bleacher fans took on Card Talk last week from Cards fans (some who post on NSBB) who attended the games at Wrigley. I agree that claiming one fan group is "greater" than another is a difficult case to prove and an exercise in futility.
  4. I've never been one to try to rile up Card fans   but evidently the actions of some of the Busch bleacher fans are (at best) no better than the actions of some of the Cubs fans in the Wrigley bleachers. Vance - I think it's a good thing you won't be in the bleachers this weekend. The natives will be out for blood - especially after last weekend's sweep. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/columnists.nsf/bryanburwell/story/14E9C9EC8141AED9862571550013A408?OpenDocument
  5. Dylan Pery of Fox wanted this added to our discussing reagrding Mr. McGwire. Excerpts from article primarily on Bonds. K-town - Your thoughts? http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5511388 Of course, this issue isn't confined to the Giants' slugger. Any such discussion must involve McGwire, whose cowardly performance before Congress should not be forgotten. If the issue of steroids and the Hall of Fame gets conflated over time with Bonds and only Bonds, then it's an objectively racist turn of events. McGwire may not have had a muckraking (and lest those in power tell you otherwise, "muckraking" is not a pejorative) book written about him; but, over the years, his body changes and performance spikes are only modestly less striking than Bonds' by some. If McGwire escapes comparable ridicule and punitive measures, it's a disservice to the game. That's why it's vital for MLB's already dubious steroids probe to stretch deeply into the past. Vote no for Bonds. Vote no for McGwire. Vote no for any player who similarly ran afoul of what sensible fans regard as fair play.
  6. The Dodgers received Todd Hundley and his ridiculous contract for Grudzy and Karros who proceeded to help the Cubs win the division.
  7. Nice post MET - as usual, very fair and unbiased analysis.
  8. From Cards talk: "It was too cold. The Cards have always been a hot weather team."
  9. Musial - .331/.417/.559/.976 Banks - .274/.331/.500/.831 Sandberg - .285/.344/.452/.796 Smith - .262/.337/.328/.665 You conveniently forgot to add Home Runs and RBI.
  10. Hey K-town, Banks > Musial and Sandberg > Ozzie.
  11. Will it cost extra to get one of the seats with a view of beautiful downtown East St. Louis? :)
  12. Didn't Palmeiro try to make himself loook good by threatening to sue Canseco? Gee I wonder why he never went through with it.
  13. The following is from fanball.com - a fantasy site. I see this as good news for the Cubs. THE NEWS After trade talks spanned several weeks about a potential deal to send outfielder Luis Matos to the Cubs for second baseman Todd Walker, the Baltimore Sun reports the talks have cooled significantly. The Orioles wanted the Cubs to pay the difference of the two players' salaries—the Chicago second baseman makes approximately $900,000 more than the Orioles center fielder—but the clubs have yet to agree on the monetary amount and have not made any progress toward getting the deal done. Our View The monetary issue along with the fact that it's looking more likely that second baseman Brian Roberts will be ready to play on Opening Day, have made this trade unattractive to the O's. Don't be surprised if the team tries to deal Matos sometime this season in an effort to open up a spot for prospect Nick Markakis to play.
  14. What would your top three be? I have it 1) A. Rod 2) Ortiz and 3) Pujols.
  15. Thanks man. Just curious, why do you think Giambi will decrease. He seems to be past his health and steroid issues and has the short porch at Yankee stadium going for him.
  16. I'm not a big fan of grandstanding politicians, but the fact remains that if Congress didn't get involved, the players union would never have caved in to the current policy - which by no means is perfect but it is a step in the right direction. Congress didn't need the permission of McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro, and Schilling to get involved. If I recall, none of those guy shed any light on the steroid problem at the hearing.[/quote] It's not Congress's fault that they lied (Palmeiro) or were evasive (Sosa and McGwire). They had an opportunity to clear the air and they choose not to and now are dealing with the consequences. Q. What was baseball's policy on steroids before Congress threatened to get involved? A. None Q. What would baseball's policy be without congress? A. Maybe at best, Selig's water-downed joke of a proposal - if the players union allowed it.
  17. Very simple pool where you draft four players and your top three count. 28 players will be drafted in total (7 teams). The team that usually wins is the one that picks the guys that make the biggest increase in HRs over the previous year (e.g., last year it was A. Jones and D. Lee). Who will have the biggest increase in HRs from last year? Who will have the biggest decrease in HRs from last year? What are your thoughts/projections on/for Thome, Travis Haffner, Edmonds, Sheffield and A. Jones? Other thoughts and logic would be greatly appreciated as well.
  18. I'm not a big fan of grandstanding politicians, but the fact remains that if Congress didn't get involved, the players union would never have caved in to the current policy - which by no means is perfect but it is a step in the right direction.
  19. Same way I've always felt - It's a joke that proves nothing.
  20. Maybe not, but ESPN is reporting that Selig is considering a suspension. Contrary to what many think, even in a criminal trial with a high burden of proof, a body or smoking gun is not required and overwhelming circumstantial evidence can convict someone - just ask Scott Petersen. Selig should suspend Bonds now and worry about the players union later.
  21. It happened in a Brewers game against the A's.
  22. Yeah except for the whole point when Canseco was the source, informant, and some guy in his book. Wasn't it about this time last year that all the McGwire and Palmeiro supporters were dismissing Canseco's allegations as not credible? With Palemiro's positive test and McGwire's weak "testimony" at the hearings, even the most fervent Canseco haters must admit that Canseco's allegations have credibility.
  23. I never said it's just about Mac. I think that he's treating Bonds & Sosa unfairly, also. (although Sosa got CAUGHT cheating, so his integrity is pretty much toast). i think part of the idea of this thread was that mcgwire's integrity was toast (because of his performance at the congressional hearing), so if all we have to do is say someone has been dishonest in the past in order to declare that they took steroids, i guess mcgwire is dead to rights. seems like an awfully low standard of proof to me, though. There's more to the questioning of his integrity than just his performance at the hearing or Canseco's eyewitness accounts. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/289500p-247837c.html
  24. Interesting perspective on Bonds, McGwire and Selig by St. Louis writer Bryan Burwell who calls for Selig to invoke the "for the good of the game clause" and suspend Bonds. Note: Judge Keenesaw Mountain Landis used this clause to kick the Black Sox out of baseball after a jury found them innocent. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/columnists.nsf/bryanburwell/story/C613AE7F7D4A8CAC8625712B001CA4AA?OpenDocument
  25. Agreed. BTW, what was the name of that guy that made chest-thumping, finger pointing denials of steroid use and threatened to sue Jose Canseco for libel? Oh yeah, Rafael Palmeiro - never mind.
