  1. This was a Baltimore based article, not Chicago. Just because you still like Sammy, doesn't mean THEY do. If you don't rip, Dusty, Macias, Perez, or haven't RIPPED Hawkins, Hundley etc. Then what you say makes sense. Otherwise you're just being selective. Sammy has done nothing good for them at all. It's one thing to expect Cubs fans to not vilify him, it's another to expect his new team to do the same. Badger - Thanks for posting the article. It was interesting to hear how the view in Baltimore has changed so much in just 1/2 a season. Some people in Chicago will defend the Gladiator no matter what - so be it.
  2. i don't think you know what ironic means I believe I do. Do you? In this case, it was used in a sarcastic, scoffing, mocking manner. Main Entry: ironic Part of Speech: adjective Definition: sarcastic Synonyms: acrid, alert, arrogant, backbiting, biting, bitter, burlesque, caustic, chaffing, clever, contemptuous, contradictory, critical, cutting, cynical, defiant, derisive, disparaging, double-edged, exaggerated, implausible, incisive, incongruous, ironical, jibing, keen, mocking, mordant, paradoxical, pungent, quick-witted, ridiculous, sardonic, satiric, satirical, scathing, scoffing, sharp, sneering, spicy, trenchant, twisted, uncomplimentary, unexpected, witty, wry Antonyms: sincere Source: Roget's New Millennium™ Thesaurus, First Edition (v 1.1.1) Copyright © 2005 by Lexico Publishing Group, LLC. 3. The Gladiator passes McGwire the same week that Vicor Conte of BALCOR pleads guilty to distributing steroids. How ironic.
  4. Looks like it will offer a nice view of East St. Louis.
  5. The reason a lot of people don't like Joe Buck is because he comes off as an arrogant, condensending guy with a lame sense of humor who is living off the family name - the same reasons a lot of people (myself included) did not care for Chip Caray. I thought Jack Buck was an excellent announcer.
  6. Instead of the current interrogation methods used at Gitanamo Bay, maybe the CIA should switch to forcing the Al Qaeda members to listen to endless repeats of Buck & McCarver's all-star tape. Listening to their boring, condesending style, their lame senses of humor, their keen eyes for the obvious would surely drive the prisoners crazy and force them to reveal everything they know.
  7. Actually Edmonds is batting in the second hole and has been for about a month. 17 games 57 AB batting 2nd 37 games 127 AB batting 4th 14 games 50 AB batting 5th 5 games 10 AB batting 6th Let me try this another way, if Pujols was hitting behind Patterson and Perez all year (like Lee has) he would IMO have less RBI than he has now hitting behind Eckstein, Edmonds (and others who have hit second) which makes Lee's accomplishments all the more impressive. Also, Lee's home run average would be higher if he hadn't played all those years in Florida (just ask Carlos Del Gado).
  8. Imagine how much better D. Lee's numbers would be if he it behind all-stars like Eckstein and Edmonds instead of hitting behind low OBP players like Patterson, Perez, etc.
  9. Job well done!!!!!!!!!!!! The voices of reason, common sense and integrity have triumped.
  10. Posted byChicagoCardFan Congrats to the best player of the first half, and the fans that deserve to see him play! One of the classiest players in sports gets his due. Same thing could be said for Eckstein. I'm glad the little guy made it.
  11. Posted by vaball Veteran I voted for Lee every time by the way. Pujols is having another great season, but Lee's season has just been preposterous and he deserves to start. Good job Vaball! Thanks for not listening to the Pujols promoting by Shannon and Crazy Al Hrbowski. I voted for Eckstein by the way.
  12. When I started this post/endeavor six weeks, things looked bleak with D. Lee 350K votes behind. But thanks to the valiant efforts of true cubs fans like "Vance the Cub Fan" the goal is in site. I don't have a problem with Pujols being the DH. But the MVP for the half, MVLee deserves to start at first as a matter of principal. Keep up the good work Cubs fans.
  13. Rumors floating around that Rolen might step aside for a more deserving player because of his mediocre (at best) first half evidently are not true. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/stories.nsf/cardinals/story/7DA0E32012BA4AAB8625701100117AA5?OpenDocument[/url]
  14. So where have all the national and other prognosticators gone that predicted D. Lee's numbers would fall dramatically by mid-June? It's mid June. D. Lee's at .386, 18, 56. Leading or tied in all triple crown categories. Gold glove fielder. Some fall. The gap between Pujols and Lee has closed from 300K to 200K. Nomar and Griffey are (deservedly) dropping. Aramis and Barrrett's vote total are rising. Maybe the voters aren't as dumb as a lot of us thought. Or maybe it's just the fact that the Cubs have been at home - whatever works!
  15. Posted by jiml60 Very impressive and creative jim160. You'd make a great Chicago captain.
  16. Posted by the Mole One would think La Russa would rather have a gold glove at first (since the game matters) and Pujols at DH - essentially giving his best player three days off. Sounds like that would be a win-win for the Cardinals. Inuries do happen in all-star games - just ask Ray Fosse. He was never the same player.
  17. Chicago Card Fan wrote Nomar doesn't serve to start - It should be Nefi Perez.
  18. More support for D. Lee. This time from Rick Morrissey in today's trib.
  19. Posted by vaball Agreed, but he's not in the same class now defensively as Lee. When Ramirez came to the Cubs, his errors (which were mostly throwing) went form 30+ to around 15. I would attribute that entirely to Lee - not the Cubs coaching staff or Ramirez's work ethic. Again, D. Lee has earned his gold glove status.
  20. Posted by Vaball Good post Vaball - nice to see not everyone has lost their sense of humor. BTW, are tractor pulls more fun than square dances?
  21. Chief Cardinal wrote: Isn't putting Pujols in Lee's league on defense a bit of a stretch? How many gold gloves does Pujols have? "and maybe a couple of more "- Like Scott (DL) Rolen and Larry (4th place) Walker?
  22. As of today, not only has D. Lee moved significantly ahead of Pujols in all offensive categories, he is leading the whole NL in BA, RBIs and HRs and is a gold glove fielder. Get off your butts Cubs fans and vote for D. Lee to star at 1B in the all-star game.
  23. Sorry Red Bird fans, even your home town paper, the Sporting News has Lee ahead of Pujols. Show some integrity and vote Lee as starting 1B in the all-star game. From the Sporting News: The first turn of the 2005 season is almost behind us. At this writing, almost all teams are at or beyond the 40-game mark, which means, roughly speaking, we're a quarter of the way through the season. As such, it's perhaps time to take stock of the season in our midst and hand out some first-turn hardware. So here then are your 2005 "25 percent Awards" ... NL MVP: Derrek Lee, Cubs To preempt a few objections to this pick, consider that the MVP voting instructions distributed by MLB each year expressly state that players on non-contending teams should be granted consideration. The risible notion that MVPs must come from upper-tier teams is entirely an imported notion by the voters. If you overlook the best player because his teammates stink, you're doing the award a disservice. So Lee it is. And here's why: Best SLG and fifth-best OBP in the NL, 8-for-9 in steals and excellent defense at first. He's also on pace for 51 homers and 55 doubles on the season. Runner-Up: Chipper Jones, Braves
  24. The enemy (cardinal fans) are circling their tractors around Albert Pujols. The self-proclaimed "most knowledgeable baseball fans in the world" are ignoring who has the better BA, OPS, Gold glove and number of clutch hits and are promoting a stuff the ballot box initiative for Pujols. Don't let them get away with this. Send a message to the Hill billy Card fans that you are more knowledgeable about baseball than they are and will vote for the most deserving player. Let them stick to tractor pulls and square dances - where they are more qualified. In Chicago tradition, vote early and vote often for D. Lee!
