1. I had almost forgotten that Hader pitched for the Brewers, since they hadn't used him against the Cubs this season. Now I understand why.
2. Grant gets it. https://www.sbnation.com/platform/amp/mlb/2018/6/5/17411486/mlb-draft-2018-grades
3. Today's MLB.com box score is one for the ages:
4. There are now only 2 teams with fewer losses than the Cubs in baseball, as the Red Sox and Yankees have 12 each. The Cubs have 15 along with the Braves, Diamondbacks, and Cards.
5. They're also 8 games out of first, having dug themselves an enormous hole against an easy early schedule, and even if you put them as good a team as the DBacks right now, they're still projecting to finish 83-79 right now and well out of a playoff spot. Projected to finish ahead of them are the Cubs (95-67), the Dbacks (93-69), the Nats (92-70), the Cards (89-73), the Brewers (85-77), the Braves (85-77), and the Pirates (84-78), with the Phillies (83-79) projected even with them and the Rockies (82-80) a game back.
6. I'm frankly intrigued to watch a soccer player without the ability to run.
7. Braves are Murderer's Row right nowWhat does that have to do with Matt Kemp?
8. In general I hate the idea of a slaughter rule in MLB, but I like it much better than umpires changing the zone mid game to move it along.
9. Automated strike zones, please.
10. We're now over a month into the season, and the NL is 28-15 against the AL and neither Baltimore nor Texas has played any interleague yet.
11. In 6 losses to the Cubs, the Brewers have amassed a total of 4 runs.
12. Angels pitcher Jaime Barria threw 49 pitches in the first inning today against the Giants, and allowed no runs.
13. To add, the Cubs are now 12 games into the season, and all non-Bryant players have had at least one off day, and all but Bryant and Russell has had two. With 4 realistic bench options and missing Rizzo for 5 games. EDIT: The Cubs have used 11 different defensive starting lineups in 12 games. The only repeat was Contreras-Rizzo-Baez-Bryant-Russell-Schwarber-Happ-Heyward.
14. For reference, the preseason SPI for Pittsburgh was 1490, slightly below average (average is 1500). After their start, they raised their rating by 5 points and their record projects to 81-81 instead of 79-83, due in part to the ratings of the Cards and Brewers dropping.
15. Nine games have been played. Nobody has banked a lot of wins already. Going 7-2 to start the season turns a projected 81 win team into a projected 85 win team. Statistically it does nothing of the sort. If theu are projecting for .500, they've banked 1-2 wins. If they were projected for, say, 70 wins, they've banked 2-3 wins.
16. They’ve started so well/banked a lot of wins already they could end up being kinda Brewers or Cardinal like from last year. Kinda in it but not really for the division and a WC team until the end. They also haven’t really played a real team yet, Tigers for 3, Twins for 2 and Reds for 4. They’re probably still closer to a 78 win team than a 85 win team but the early wins/start will help them outperform projections a bit. Nine games have been played. Nobody has banked a lot of wins already.
17. Sure, it's cold, but if you make a concerted effort to not let Cubs fans get tickets, then...you don't sell tickets.
18. Joe Panik now has HRs off Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen, to propel the Giants to two consecutive 1-0 victories.
19. Happ isn't out, I think it went Caratini catching -> Contreras to left -> Zobrist to 2nd -> Baez to SS, so I think Russell is out. Happ is in center.
