  1. Since it's looking like there's definitely going to be at least some semblance of a season this year, it's time to start discussion on it. There are some caveats: - The Ivy league has yet to announce it will play any games this year, the only conference thus far to not even lay out a potential schedule. - The Patriot league has announced that it will play no non-conference games and will not board any planes to fly to games this year. Instead they will split the 10-team conference into regional matchups that will be played 4 times each, followed by additional games late in the year against the rest of the conference as conditions hope to get better. As a result, right now, Boston University and Holy Cross are scheduled to play each other 6 times. Preseason AP poll: 1 Gonzaga (28) 2 Baylor (24) 3 Villanova (11) 4 Virginia (1) 5 Iowa 6 Kansas 7 Wisconsin 8 Illinois 9 Duke 10 Kentucky 11 Creighton 12 Tennessee 13 Michigan State 14 Texas Tech 15 West Virginia 16 North Carolina 17 Houston 18 Arizona State 19 Texas 20 Oregon 21 Florida State 22 UCLA 23 Ohio State 24 Rutgers 25 Michigan
  2. Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz tested positive for COVID on Sunday, which I'd be concerned about for the Illini, but fortunately I don't think any Illinois players got within 6 feet of him all game.
  3. I won't stand for this Ethan Horvath erasure. That's on Berhalter, not me. (also forgot he was on Brugge)
  4. 8 UCL games happening today, and USMNT in the starting lineup for 2 teams (Pulisic-Chelsea, Dest-Barcelona), and on the bench for 2 more (Reyna-Dortmund, Adams-RB Leipzig), and would be a 5th if McKennie didn't have COVID (Juventus).
  5. Ah, I was reading as where they finished. That must be where they seeded to start the Playoffs. I think Atlanta was on the 4-1 list, but must’ve improved enough to be off the 5-1 list. They are 3rd from the top on that 5-1 list.
  6. He also always, and I mean always, does a jump stop just before reaching the line of scrimmage, no matter what the play is.
  7. The NFC East is 2-14-1 against teams outside their division. The tie was Philly against a terrible Bengals team, with wins by the Cowboys with a huge comeback over the Falcons, and the Eagles over a beat up 49ers team. Advantage Philly, I guess?
  8. Goff has been broken for 2 years. Neither team breaks 25 in this game.
  9. I'm so tired of football experts declaring the Bears have to establish the run because that's Bear football. Nobody establishes the run anymore. The run is for a change of pace once the passing game is established.
  10. Telling though that the divisional round is where any team on that list tops out at as far as end of season results go. That's got to be wrong, because that 1998 Falcons team ended up making the Super Bowl (they also improved their efficiency over the season).
  11. Live ELO (538) playoff projections : AFC: 1. Chiefs 12-4 2. Ravens 12-4 3. Titans 12-4 4. Bills 10-6 5. Steelers 12-4 6. Browns 10-6 7. Colts 9-7 NFC: 1. Seahawks 12-4 2. Packers 11-5 3. Bucs 10-6 4. Eagles 6-9-1 5. Bears 11-5 6. Rams 10-6 7. Saints 10-6
  12. Fun fact, the Rams don't have a win this season outside the NFC East.
  13. The NFC is pretty bad this year. The NFC East is bad this year. The NFC contenders are right there with the AFC contenders, going by efficiency at FootballOutsiders. 3 of the top 5 are NFC (SEA,TB,LAR), and the top 10 (NO/GB) and top 12 (MIN) and top 14 (CAR) are evenly split. The AFC is pretty heavily split between the good teams (BAL/KC/PIT/IND/TEN) and the really bad teams (NYJ/CIN/DEN/JAX)
  14. They aren't. The teams they've played so far were a combined 12-18 coming into today. Rams, Saints, Titans, Packers are four of their next five games. That should show us who they are one way or the other The teams the Bears have played thus far are a combined 15-20. a combined 43% winning percentage The teams the Packers have played thus far are a combined 11-17. a combined 39% winning percentage And that gap was closed today as the Bears beat the 3-3 Panthers and the Packers lost to the 4-2 Bucs.
  15. The Bucs are not only good, I'll go out on a limb and say that will be the best team the Bears will end up having played this year. I could see them finishing 12-4 this season.
  16. I dropped the Tampa defense just a few moments ago to grab LAR, because I was concerned GB would put up 40. Mid first quarter, alteady 2 picks and a defensive TD. Shouldn't have overthought it.
  17. How good are the Bears, really, compared to the rest of the NFL? I wouldn't take them heads up against the Seahawks, Packers or Rams in the NFC, or the Chiefs, Ravens, Steelers or Titans in the AFC, but I think they're currently in the same league as the next tier of team, playoff contender that would be a surpise in the Super Bowl, like the Bills, Bucs or Saints.
  18. Still ugly, still 5-0 in the NFC, could clinch the NFC South in 2 weeks with a win vs the Saints. Tough 4 game stretch coming up here, but then again it was a tough 7 game stretch 3 weeks ago and they're 2-1 so far.
  19. The Bears are the kings of good bad teams I guess: Of note, every one of the top 10 "worst" 4-1 teams made the playoffs, and 1 made the Super Bowl (1998 Atlanta).
  20. Meanwhile, the Bears sit 4-1 with 4 conference wins and the tiebreaker over the Bucs. Their playoff chances are better than anyone would have reasonably expected at this point.

    NFL Week 5

Had a conversation with a football superfan today and he was pointing out how odd it is that the league is taking such preccautions about COVID and yet they practically ignore continuing issues with concussions and long term brain damage. He was using it as an argument that they're being overcautious about COVID, where I feel like the hypocrisy errs in the other direction. Tackle football is fundamentally broken as a sport, and I don't know that there's a good way to salvage it while doing proper prevention of long term damage to players.
  22. Sergio Romo walking Jose Altuve with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th...I don't know what to hate more.
  23. It's schedule adjusted, but DVOA is super volatile 3 weeks into the season just because of the lack of overall data. They do an adjustment based on preseason team expectations that fades over time (by week 8), and by that measure (DAVE) Indy is 5th behind KC, New Orleans, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. However, they are still legit, and the defense is super legit, so we'll see how Foles does against a real defense.
  24. Turns out the White Sox offense is still good against left-handed pitching. 14-0 vs lefties this season coming into today, leading 3-0 in the 3rd against the A's lefty.
