Apparently the Cubs have decided that the first pitch Cook throws is the best one they'll see in the AB, so might as well swing at it. -
Whatever that thing is, you should get it looked at. Marquis was throwing a lot of hittable balls, high in the strike zone, and was fortunate they were a lot of "at-em" balls. Hill did the same yesterday for 10 pitches in the 6th and was pulled immediately.

If they can get out of the inning giving up just the one run, there's still plenty of time to get back in the game.

I hate to say it, but Cook has pitched very well today since the 2nd inning. It's hard to work the count when the pitcher isn't throwing pitches outside the strike zone.

Marquis has allowed 8 baserunners through 6 innings, good enough for a 1.33 WHIP.

Yeah, I can't believe this pathetic offense. They never score runs. No wonder they've lost six straight.

As far as first-pitch swinging goes, I have no problem with the pitches Ramirez and Fukudome swung at. They were both right down the middle, and one of them just barely missed a HR. Sometimes the first pitch is the best pitch you'll get all AB. If it's a hittable pitch, go ahead and swing at it. There's no point in being patient just for the sake of patience and taking a pitch right down the middle.

That was the first 1-2-3 inning since the first inning last night for the Cubs (the first inning today wasn't technically 1-2-3 as it involved a DP)

Actually, you couldn't have an at-bat, a walk, and have an OPS of 1.000. Pretty sure he meant a PA, not an AB. I will get into a semantics argument if I darned well please! :)

Historically, Fontenot has been a better hitter than Theriot. He's bound to snap out of it eventually. I don't mind him playing so much as batting him first. EDIT: Actually, I was more concerned that Blanco would be catching with a day game after an extra-inning night game.

I can understand pulling Hill and maybe Wuertz. I would have left Marshall in longer rather than going to Lieber then. Perhaps Lou remembered Hill falling apart quickly in the 6th last year in Coors. I have no problem pulling him a little early there. I had no issue with Lou pulling Hill there, mostly because 7 of his first 9 pitches were belt high or higher. Barmes homered at a pitch above the belt, and Helton walked on pitches at eye level. He was missing badly. Also had no issue going to Wuertz in the 6th, and having the quick hook when it was clear Wuertz didn't have anything either. Marshall, though, is more than capable of pitching to hitters on both sides of the plate.

Planning ahead for the Pats pick, I'm pretty sure they need secondary help, especially CB. Are the CBs left on the board a reach? Maybe Charles Godfrey from Iowa or Tracy Porter from IU.

Looks like the four-run barrier is the key on both hitting and pitching. Yes, I do believe the Cubs are undefeated in games where they score at least 4 runs and allow fewer than 4 runs... :)

If this hot start continues, though, get ready to hear "best start since 1969" a lot, as the Cubs were 75-44 that year on August 16, the day the season abruptly ended for the Cubs.

The decision in the series wouldn't be Hill or Marquis (unless you are talking about which to skip), but bumping Hill down to the St. Louis series bumps Zambrano up to the last game of the Milwaukee series. Marquis was scheduled to pitch anyway. -

Marquis, Zambrano and Dempster. They play Washington next, then have a day off, then Milwaukee. -
with Dusty at the helm, they may take underachievement to epic levels. Yeah, I could definitely see any of the Cards, Astros and Pirates finishing ahead of the Reds, even though the Reds are likely the 3rd most talented team in the division.

Well, with Soriano hitting as he's been hitting, he should bat next to the pitcher. With him at the leadoff, the order is simply switched. Maybe we can all pretend he's the 9 hitter after the first inning.

It's only the fourth time in the last century that the Cubs started this well (In 1907 they started 17-4). In 1975, the Cubs started 15-6, lost their next game, and finished the season tied for last at 75-87. In 1932, the Cubs started 15-6, got to 17-6 before losing their next game, and finished the season 90-64, losing the World Series to the Yankees. In 1969, the Cubs started 15-6, got to 16-6 before losing their next game, and finished...no, the season was never finished.
